    THE NATIONAL LIONFISH PROJECT

    TheNationalLionfishProjectisaPilotProjectwithinalargerRegionalProjectentitledMitigatingtheThreatofInvasive Alien Species in the Insular Caribbean(MTIASIC) funded by the Global Environment Facility(GEF)andtheUnitedNationsEnvironmentProgramme(UNEP).TheLionfishPilotProject in Jamaica is ledbytheUniversityoftheWestIndiesDiscoveryBayMarineLab(UWIDBML)andNationalEnvironmentandPlanningAgency(NEPA).Itseekstostrengthenpartnershipsamonggovernmentandnongovernmentalagencies in Jamaica, as well as to promote regionalcooperation.

    ItisveryunlikelythatthelionfishwithbetotallyeradicatedfromJamaicaortheregion,andthereforeitis increasingly important to learnhow tomanage thisspecies effectively.     Lets Eat It to Beat It

  • The Lionfish (Pterois volitans and Pterois miles)belongstoagroupofvenomousfishesandisrelatedtothescorpionfishwhicharefoundregularlyinJamaica.Itisasitandwaitpredator,capableofconsuming largequantitiesof fishandshellfish daily and can negatively impact the fishstocks in a country. Its venomous spines protectitselffrombecomingpreyforotherfish,andthesespinesarealsocapableof inflictingaverypainfulstingtohumans.

    HOWDIDITGETHERE?The Lionfish is native to the Indian and PacificOceans. In the late 80s and early 90s, marineaquaria enthusiastsmainly in the USA importedthese fish for their homes and offices.However,formany reasons, these fishwere released intothe canals and seas, and set free. Since then,theyhavemadetheirwayalongtheeastcoastoftheUSA,theBahamas,Hispaniola,Cuba,Jamaica,andmany other countries throughout the Caribbean.

    WHATISTHEIMPACTOFTHELIONFISH?The Lionfish preys on juvenile fish and shellfish.Manycountrieshavereportedstaggeringnumbersoflionfishontheirreefsandothermarineenvironments. The lionfish reproduces allyear round intheCaribbean (every4days).A female lionfish iscapable of producing 2 million eggs each year.LionfishinJamaicahavebeenfoundinveryshallow seagrass areas to areas 335m (1100ft)deepbelowthesurface.TheyhavebeenrecordedinJamaicatolengthsof51cm(20inches).

    The lionfishhasbeendescribedashighly invasivein the Caribbean, due to its negative impacts onthereefecology,economyandpublichealth.

    Wearingheavygloves,holdformanoeuvringinthemouth.

    Remove all the spines cutting above or intothefleshalongeachside

    Cutfromthetailtotheheadwithscissors.

    Scaleandgutfish.

    YoucanremoveheadandfillettheLionfish.

    Disposeofspinescarefullybystoringorwrappinginthicklayersofpaper!

    Incinerate in an isolated container (e.g.Metalbin)thencrushingthespines.

    Cookinthenormalfashionathightemperatures

    Therangeoftheeffectsofthestingvarieswidelyandisdependentonthevictimandtheamountofvenomthatwasinjected.Thevictimmayexperience:

    Extremepain Puncturewounds/laceration Bruising/ purpleblack discolouration, redness,

    swelling, numbness/ tingling, tissue shedding atthewoundsite

    Nausea,vomiting,abdominalcramps Hypotension, shortness of breath, changes in

    heartrate

    Tremors,weakness,fainting,seizures Shock,respiratory/cardiacarrest

    FIRSTAIDTREATMENT

    Carefullyremoveanyvisiblespines/foreignmaterialfromwound

    Immerseinwaterwhichisashotasthevictimcantoleratefor3090mins(45C/113Fmax).

    Repeat this step, ifnecessary, forpaincontrol. Ifatsea,hotwaterfromthejetontheoutboardofengineofboatcanbeusedonyourwaytoland

    Scrubwithsoapandwater Vigorouslyirrigatewithfreshwater Antihistamines/analgesicsmaybegiven,ifavailable,priortoseekingmedicalattention.

    ALLinjuriesshouldbereferredtoaphysicianformedicalattention.
