HSL: How it Works
Hue (outer circle) • Determines the basic colour
e.g. reds can have an orange or magenta hue
Saturation (horizontal axis)• The amount of grey in a
colour, determines how vivid it is
Luminosity (vertical axis)• How light or dark the colour
appears
Colour Referencing
• Simple to interpret alpha numeric references
• Each reference component has a meaning
• The letter (Alpha component) denotes base colour (R = Red)
• The numbers determine Hue, Saturation and Luminosity
The Alpha Component
• Indicates the base colour• 8 base colours make up the colour wheel
• Red • Orange • Yellow• Green • Cyan• Blue• Violet• Magenta
R555 is Red
The First Number
• Indicates the Hue within each base colour
• A Green could be more Yellow or more Blue
G356 is a ‘yellow’ Green
G956 is a ‘blue’ Green
The Second Number
• Indicates the Saturation of the colour
• An Orange could be more or less vivid
O527 is a dull orange
O567 is more intense
The Third Number
• Indicates the Luminosity of the colour
• A Blue could be darker or lighter
B624 is a darker Blue
B626 is a lighter Blue
