Message from His WorshipMayor Rajko DodicJuly 7, 2011, marked an important date in the growth of the Arts Community in Lethbridge as the sod was officially turned to start construction of the new, and highly anticipated, Community Arts Centre.

The Integrated Community Sustainability Plan, approved by Council in 2010, identifies the arts as one of the core components of our future. As we move forward with this plan, this exciting new facility will proudly serve as a cornerstone in our downtown core, reminding us all how important and vital the Arts are to the City of Lethbridge.

Around the province, Alberta Arts Days will be held from September 30 to October 2, 2011. Here in Lethbridge, the Allied Arts Council (AAC) has planned a wide array of activities during this event for residents of our community and the surrounding area. Lethbridge’s diverse pool of artists and organizations will be showcasing a broad range of art disciplines including visual art, music, performances, demonstrations and more.

I would like to thank the AAC and the other dedicated volunteers who have worked diligently to bring “Arts Days” to our community. Without your hard work, these events would not be possible. Lethbridge is, and continues to be a vibrant and creative community. I invite you to experience “Arts Days” and discover all the amazing talent located right here in our City.

Rajko Dodic, B.A., LL.B.Mayor

Message from Gloria Torrance,President, Allied Arts Council LethbridgeThe Allied Arts Council is very pleased to be coordinating this year’s Arts Days festivities in cooperation with our arts community. This event is one of many occurring throughout the province during Alberta Arts Days 2011; an annual celebration of Alberta’s culture, heritage, artistic diversity and provincial pride. It is also part of Culture Days- a national movement to raise the awareness, accessibility, participation and engagement of all Canadians in the arts and cultural life of their communities.

The Arts Days weekend will include an eclectic mix of events such as the unveiling of Lethbridge’s newest piece of public art, the 8th annual ArtWalk, music & performances in Galt Gardens as part of ArtsFest, an Artisan Market, as well as many demonstrations and activities in our downtown.

This is a very exciting time for the arts in Lethbridge- as you may remember the newly renovated and expanded Southern Alberta Art Gallery (SAAG) was unveiled during last year’s Arts Days. In less than two years, we will be cutting the ribbon to open our new Community Arts Centre (now under construction); to be located just east of the SAAG. The intentional placement of these facilities in our downtown core is defining Lethbridge’s Cultural Corridor. The final piece of the corridor would be a new Performing Arts Theatre. As you will observe during this year’s Arts Days festivities, the arts are a vital and thriving part of our community, and these facilities help nurture our creative spirit.

We believe that Arts Days is an ideal opportunity to support our mission of providing leadership in advancing and enhancing the arts in Lethbridge. We encourage you to participate in Arts Days events and enjoy the diversity of talent in our community.

PHOTO SCAVENGER HUNTPhoto Scavenger Hunt is a fun new activity for this year’s Lethbridge Arts Days! It’s just like an old-fashioned scavenger hunt but with a new twist — you take photos of what you find! The goal is to share your digital photos of the places and things you see during Lethbridge Arts Days. Each person or team can share the good memories and interesting sites they encounter!

The photo scavenger hunt starts at 10:00am on Friday, September 30 and ends at 5:00pm, Sunday, October 2. Submit 10 photos, using the above clues as inspiration, by Friday, October 7, and your name will be entered into a draw for a $100 gift certificate to LA Gallery! All photos must be taken at a Lethbridge Arts Days participating event and include the clue they were inspired by.

Upload your photos to our facebook group: www.facebook.com/groups/PhotoScavengerLethOr email them to [email protected]

RULESGet creative- take photos from interesting levels and angles and have fun with your camera or phone’s filters & settings! Remember, all photos should be family-friendly! Please submit only one picture per category- It’s tempting to take pictures of every cool thing you see, but for the purposes of this contest, we only want to see the best pictures you’ve taken for each category. It should go without saying, but if you’re taking pictures of a person, always ask permission! Also, please keep in mind that we may be posting pictures on the Arts Days and Allied Arts Council website/publications!

Aeolian Aviary - Denton Fredrickson and Catherine Ross

3

Marking the opening of Lethbridge Arts Days 2011, the City of Lethbridge will unveil the latest addition to its Public Art Collection at 10:00am Friday September 30th. Lethbridge artists Denton Fredrickson and Catherine Ross’ sculpture Aeolian Aviary was selected by a jury from dozens of submissions from across Canada and around the world. The work, located in the exterior north east window of the Southern Alberta Art Gallery, includes a programmable sound element and dozens of cast birds perched on high tensile wires projected through the plate glass. The official unveiling will include presentations by Mayor Dodic and Carol Thibert, Chair of the City of Lethbridge Pubic Art Committee, as well as a talk about the work by the artists.

On Saturday morning from 10 – 11:30am, Carol Thibert, on behalf of the City of Lethbridge Art Acquisition Committee, will lead a public art tour highlighting several of the recently installed public art in downtown Lethbridge. Beginning at City Hall, and continuing through downtown, the tour will end at the newly unveiled Aeolian Aviary. Local artists will be in attendance to discuss some of their pieces.

Immediately following the tour, Mayor Dodic will unveil the Mayor’s Pick, a work from the City Art Collection that will be displayed at the SAAG for the coming year. Rounding off the morn-ing at 11:45, Jane Purdue, Public Art Consultant with The Planning Partnership, will speak on the transformative power of public art. Light refreshments will be served.

From 1-5pm on Sunday, October 2nd, SAAG will host Family Fun Day. Sponsored by Heart of the City, Family Fun Day promises to be a carnival of entertainment, with street performers roaming the gallery and Galt Gardens, and drop-in family art activities in the TD Creativity Center. Street performers will wow attendees with clown magic, feats of balance and aerial trickery, and Loose Moose Theatre Company will delight all with their internationally known “The Impro Show” - a fast paced performance where performers create comic scenes based on information gleaned from the audience. Join us to make a quirky recycled robot or a naturally inspired installation and enjoy some SAAG magic with our street performers.
