Our Diploma of General Studies will prepare you for uni study and is your pathway to your preferred degree. You study for one-year, full-time (on campus or online) completing subjects focused on things like research and writing skills, maths and stats, as well as specific subjects related to the degree you want to move into.

After completing the Diploma of General Studies, you’ll have:

• guaranteed entry into most of our undergrad degrees

• credit for up to four subjects in a bachelor’s degree

Don’t live near a uni campus? Holding down a full-time job? Caring for family? Whatever your situation – we get that study isn’t your only commitment. That’s why we have more than 70 courses that can be studied online.

So you don’t need to worry about fitting study into your already busy schedule. We make things so flexible that study just slots right into your life – at a time and place that’s convenient for you.

As an online student, we understand you have different needs to on-campus students. And we want you to know that just because you’re studying online, doesn’t mean you’re studying alone. We make sure that you get the support you need. It’s tailored. It’s useful. And it will make a big difference to your success as an online student.

We also have online learning advisers available every day (yep, you heard right – seven days a week) until 7pm. You can reach them by phone, email, Skype or online chat.

Studying online but still keen to develop your hands-on skills? Some online courses include short, intensive learning sessions – called residential schools. Res schools are a chance for you to:

Don’t assume financial hardship doesn’t apply to you. It’s simply about those finding it difficult to provide for themselves or their family while studying. If you’re working to support yourself and this cuts into your study time, that’s financial hardship. The secret is to tell us why it’s tough.

Don’t think it’s too hard or not worth the effort to apply. It’s not as hard or as time consuming as you think – 75 per cent of our applicants say it’s easy! So, what are you waiting for?

After completing her Honours project, she submitted an application to present her findings at the New South Wales (NSW) Rural Women’s Gathering.

The NSW Rural Women’s Gathering is an annual conference that provides an opportunity for rural women to come together to build resilience, network, learn, share experiences and support each other.

“I’m from Cowra originally and have an Indigenous background. My nan was part of the stolen generation. In my family there was no expectation for going to university, but my mum and my relatives are all very proud of me. Dennis is currently working in Sydney as part of the Commonwealth Bank’s graduate program – and he doesn’t have plans to slow down any time soon.

“I’m hoping to get a full-time position at the end of the graduate scheme, and I’m interested in working more in the financing aspects of not-for-profits. I have also recently just enrolled in a Master of Professional Accounting at Charles Sturt part-time online as well, to help keep developing alongside the experience I’m getting in the graduate scheme and set me up for the next step in my career.”

“Social workers work on the frontline with people who are affected by environmental issues. We have practitioners working with families who can’t pay rising electricity prices due to poverty. Others deal with communities recovering from bushfire and drought. We also support people who are homeless by trying to find suitable shelter during extreme weather events, such as a heatwave.

“We’ve recognised that technology alone can’t help humans adapt to the effects of climate change – we need people. People who want to make a difference by bringing innovative thinking and passionate advocacy to the table to improve conditions for disadvantaged people. People who want to provide a voice for marginalised groups. People who believe in the values of social justice and human rights.”

Anthea Marriott has always loved numbers – so it made sense for her to study the Bachelor of Business (Accounting). She then realised that a mathematics degree could provide more career options, so she studied the Bachelor of Science, majoring in mathematics and minoring in statistics.

Anthea is currently working for Microsoft as a business program manager intern and recently won a national science award.

I’m the only student from Charles Sturt University to win an award in this competition, so that was another big achievement for me and I feel very proud to have represented my university.”

David Hunt has seen a fair bit in his lifetime.

“I served in the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) as a combat systems operator (mine warfare) sailor and spent the entirety of my career posted to various Minehunter and coastal ships, and land-based units from HMAS Waterhen, Sydney.”

Despite all the excitement in the RAN, David was looking for a slower pace of life. He wanted to spend more time with his young family. And he also wanted to explore his passion for helping others succeed. That’s when he landed on a teaching degree.

Fees and help with costsYour course fees will depend on the number of subjects you enrol in and the course you're studying.

For domestic students, fees per 8-point subject typically range from around $800 to $1300. Fees for international students differ.

If you are an Australian citizen or a New Zealand Special Category Visa holder, you'll likely be given a Commonwealth-supported place, and benefit from the HECS-HELP scheme.

How HECS-HELP works

1. When you enrol, you indicate that you want to pay all or part of your fees via HECS-HELP (you'll need a tax file number, but that's easy to get).

2. The government pays your fees and registers them against your tax file number.

3. You pay the balance back through deductions in your pay when you start working. You can choose to do so at any time, but it is only required once you earn above a certain amount. In 2019 the threshold is $51,957.
