Hi, everyone. So far, so good with giving up television for

Lent. I've become more aware of entertaining things around

me, rather than being entertained by a television. Snow,

smoke from a chimney and bare trees become objects of re-

flection. With the absence of television, even Fr. Elmer be-

came more entertaining. I'm just not sure if he is a comedy or

tragedy. Seriously, with less television, our interaction has

increased and appreciated.

One other way that a lack of television has become a good

reflection is the availability of quiet. Quiet is important if we

are to hear the voice of God. God's voice may not be audi-

ble, but is still as real. There are times when our hearts just

know what God wants. In the past, we called that direction

from God our conscience. God will lead and direct us if our

lives are not too cluttered with other noises. Many times we

think of God's call only in terms of vocation, but God does

direct us in our every day lives. To cultivate a good con-

science means that we take times of quiet to be directed by

our God.

At St. Michael's, on the first Thursday of each month, our

school children are invited to take quiet time during their re-

ligion classes to go to church to spend time with the Lord in

the presence of the Blessed Sacrament. They can actually stay

quiet for 20 minutes, which is a good life lesson. On the first

Thursday of each month the Blessed Sacrament is placed on

the altar from 4 till Mass time. Many people take advantage

of this quiet time to spend with the Lord in prayer.

At St. John's, the church is open during the day on Tues-

days to allow people to spend quiet time before the Stations of

the Cross are prayed later that night. Church has always been

a sanctuary from the noise of the world. Take some time to be

quiet this week.

One last thought is that at St. Michael's, we continued the

Lenten decoration, with the placing of the tomb in the sanctu-

ary. Joseph of Arimathea had provided his own tomb for Je-

sus. With the placement of the tomb, there is an additional

sense of quiet. The stone will be placed until Good Fri-

day. There is a sense of emptiness and quiet with the tomb's

presence. During Lent, let the voice of the Lord fill the empti-

ness of our lives.

Have a great week. Listen to the Lord (that was last week's

scripture). Fr. Mark
