Lessons from the Book of Jonah
Chapter 1 God calls Jonah to preach judgment upon Nineveh. Jonah refuses and tries to flee from God. Jonah is tossed overboard during a storm. God prepares a great fish to swallow Jonah.
Chapter 2 Jonah prays to God, even when he is terrified. He acknowledges God is in control. He reaffirms his faith in God. Fish vomits Jonah onto dry land.
Lessons from the Book of Jonah
Chapter 3 Jonah’s new commission is essentially the same
as the first one. Jonah obeys and his message to the Ninevites is
clear and concise. Mass repentance, from the king to the
commoner. Their repentance moves the Lord to extend grace
and mercy to them. There is no historical record of a lasting period of
belief in Nineveh. City was destroyed in 612 B.C.
Lessons from the Book of Jonah
Chapter 4 Jonah is upset with God. He has no compassion on the people of Nineveh. He holds out hope that God will judge Nineveh. God relieves Jonah from the misery of the sun. God sends a worm to damage the plant. Jonah’s anger does not arise from a desire for
justice but from his own selfishness. Jonah pities himself more than the plant. Jonah’s ungracious heart vs. the kindness of God.
Lessons from the Book of Jonah
Matthew 12:38-41: Jesus likens His own death/resurrection to Jonah’s time in the fish.
We need to have a heart like God’s towards all.A demonstration of God’s power to employ
creation to accomplish His divine plan. The power within the word of God when it comes
into contact with good and honest hearts. The importance of repentance: A requirement to
turn away from evil conduct (Luke 13:3, 5).
