Set Induction

( 3 minutes)

The concept of gradient of a straight line.

Gradient of AB

Vertical displacement

= Horizontal displacement

1) Teacher show the animation of the cartoon skiing down the hill using slide show.

Teacher asks the students about this animation.

What is actually doing by that cartoon?

What is represented by the action of cartoon skiing down the hill?

2) Then, teacher gives another two pictures that represent different stiffness of slope.

1) Students give answer for the question that teacher asks.

The cartoon is skiing down the hill.

The action of the cartoon skiing down the hill represents the hill has the slope.

2) Students give answer for the questions asks by the teacher.

Development 1

( 10 minutes)

1) Deriving the formula for the gradient of a straight line.

1) Teacher introduces the definition of the gradient by using slide show.

2) Teacher displays a diagram with a straight line in the Cartesian coordinate system.

Example 1 :

3) Teacher asks the following questions : a) What is the gradient of PQ?b) What is the coordinate of point P?c) What is the coordinate of point Q?d) How do you know that?

1) Students take note on the definition of the gradient of a straight line.

2) Student answers the questions based on their knowledge.

Example 2 :

3) Teacher asks students to state the vertical and horizontal displacement.a) What is the vertical and horizontal

displacement of this figure?

4) Teacher asks students to determine the gradient of AB.

3) Students answer the question by counting the units and give the answer.

Expected answer :

Vertical = 6 unitsHorizontal = 3 units

4) Students give answer by using the formula as below.

5) Teacher asks students : -

How do you find the vertical and

horizontal displacement when the

diagram without table grid?

6) Teacher makes a generalization of the

formula for the gradient of a straight line.

The change in y-coordinate

=

The change in x-coordinate

5) Students can get the vertical and

horizontal displacement by

subtraction.

6) Student can derive the formula for

gradient of a straight line in Cartesian

coordinate.

8) Then, teacher asks the student what would happen to the gradient if they choose P as and Q as .

9) Using the same example, teacher explain that if the position changes, gradient remains the same.

Example 2 :

8) Students give the answer of the question.

Expected answer:The gradient is still the same.

2) Calculate the gradient of the line and formulate the equation of the line.

Then, teacher asks the student to find the gradient of that straight line passing through PQ.

1) Teacher introduces and teaches students about the equation of the straight line using the aid of PowerPoint presentation.

Students give the answer.

Expected answer:Gradient of PQ,
