Lesson Plan Terminal Objective: Students, when faced with a decision about using water wisely, will make an informed citizenship decision that will both protect and conserve water.

Pre-Assessment Objectives Title: What do you Already Know? Water Goes Up and Down Objective: Evaluation Class Time: Science Activity-Students will take a quiz to assess their current understanding of the hydrologic cycle (water cycle).

Lesson One Become aware of the basics of water Objective: Exploration Title: Water Matters Class Time: Science At the conclusion of this section, your students should be able to:

Understand that water is made of hydrogen and oxygen and exists in three states of matter. TEKS-Science 3.C, 5.A,B, 6.A, 8.B Activity- Students play an outdoor game that teaches them about the molecular structure of water.

Lesson Two Become knowledgeable of the basics of water Objective: Engagement Title: Up, Up, and Away Class Time: Science At the conclusion of this section, your students should be able to:

Understand the process of evaporation and

The role temperature plays on evaporation TEKS-Science 2.B,D, 4A, 5.A,B, 6.A, 8.A,B Activity- Students will participate in a series of outdoor observations to discover the process of evaporation and will learn to take a temperature reading using a thermometer.

Lesson Three Become knowledgeable of the basics of water Objective: Engagement Title: Fluffy and Wet: Clouds Class Time: Science At the conclusion of this section, your students should be able to:

Understand how clouds are formed through the process known as condensation.

How wind moves clouds around across the Earth. TEKS-Science 1.A,B, 2.A,B, 4.A, 5.B, 7.C, 8.A, B Activity- Students conduct an observation to learn how clouds are formed through condensation and then learn to use a wind speed gauge and compass to measure wind speed and wind direction.

Lesson Four Become knowledgeable of the basics of water Objective: Engagement Title: Wet Air? Class Time: Science At the conclusion of this section, your students should be able to:

Understand how plants return water to the air through a process known as transpiration.

Know how humans do the same. TEKS-Science 1.A,B, 2.A,B, 4.A, 5.B, 7.A,C, 8.B, 9.A Activity- Students conduct an outdoor observation to investigate the process of transpiration and participate in an indoor exercise to learn more about perspiration and exhalation.

Lesson Five Become knowledgeable of the basics of water Objective: Exploration Title: H2O on the Go Class Time: Science At the conclusion of this section, your students should be able to:

Understand where precipitation comes from.

Understand how precipitation can be measured.

Understand how the water in the air known as moisture can be observed and measured. TEKS-Science 2.A,B, 4.A, 5.A,B, 7.C, 8.A,B Activity- Students learn how to use a rain gauge to measure precipitation and will do a simple observation exercise to discover how much humidity is in the air.

Lesson Six Become knowledgeable of the basics of water Objective: Exploration Title: H2O on the Flow Class Time: Science At the conclusion of this section, your students should be able to:

Identify and describe a variety of natural sources of water. TEKS-Science 2.A,B, 4.A, 7.A,C, 8.A,B Activity- Students are quizzed to test their knowledge of water bodies and then will conduct an outdoor investigation to discover the source of groundwater.

Lesson Seven Become knowledgeable of the basics of water Objective: Explanation Title: Uh Oh! No H2O? Part I Class Time: Science/Social Studies At the conclusion of this section, your students should be able to:

Understand that shortages of water sometime exist for communities due to weather patterns. TEKS-Science 2.A,B, 4.A, 7.C; Social Studies 8.C, 9.B,C Activity- Students conduct an outdoor investigation using a rain gauge and then participate in an activity that will teach them how the lack of precipitation may affect the growth and health of an entire community.

Lesson Eight Become knowledgeable of the basics of water Objective: Engagement Title: So Much Water…So Little to Drink Class Time: Science At the conclusion of this section, your students should be able to:

Understand that fresh water currently available for human use is a limited resource. TEKS-Science 2.B, 4.A, 5.A,B,C, 6.A, 7.C, 8.B Activity- Students will learn about the limited fresh water found on Earth and will then participate in an experiment to discover how to change salt water into fresh water.

Lesson Nine Become knowledgeable of the basics of water Objective: Elaboration/Evaluation Title: Uh Oh! No H2O? Part II Class Time: Science/Social Studies At the conclusion of this section, your students should be able to:

Understand that shortages of water sometime exist and that systems must be developed for sharing water that is fair for everybody who needs it.

TEKS-Science 2.A,B, 4.A, 7.C; Social Studies 9.B, 23.A,B Activity- Students will participate in an activity on the availability of water and its impact on the classroom.

Lesson Ten Become knowledgeable of the basics of water Objective: Elaboration Title: Be an H2O Hero: Conservation Class Time: Science/Social Studies At the conclusion of this section, your students should be able to:

Give an oral definition of the new term: conservation.

Tell one personal demand he or she places on water.

Write ways to conserve water around the home. TEKS-Science 2.A,B, 4.A, 7.C, 8.A,B; Social Studies 9.B, 17.B, 23.A,B Activity- Students will read a story, Sophie’s Garden, to discover actions they can take to help conserve water and will discuss the characteristics of becoming an H2O Hero.
