Article #1 Popular sovereignty, however sound as a doctrine or fair on paper, has proved worthless for peace between the North and South. It stands tottering between the hostile ranks with impotent voice beseeches its former foe, Congressional Intervention to aid in its work so that the Nebraska bill as a measure of peace to return to Congressional Intervention abolishing half a life to both. American Citizen August 27, 1856

Article #2 Kansas It has at all times since the passage of the Kansas-Nebraska bill, been our opinion, freely entertained and frankly expressed, that there was but one method by which Kansas could ever become a slave state-that plan is example and plain, and we are happy to see that the people are at last beginning it take hold of it. We have spoken of it so often and so emphatically that we deem it necessary to say but little now. It is simply for slave holders and persons favorable to institution of slavery to move into the territory with their property and permanently settle on the (sic), and let as many as are well disposed to those slave holders also go, and if they have not the means of procuring homes, let Southern men who have interest in the matter, furnish the means of settling the territory with a southern population. The portion now being discussed for the argument of the territory is one which no man reasonably object, except those who ignited the Northern Emigrant Aid Association. But the action of the South is wholly defensives, and unless Southern men act and act promptly, they may as well give up all hope of carrying slavery into the territory. One slave in the territory is worth more to the cause than five voters. American Citizen February 20, 1856

Quote #1 In May of 1861 a pro-union meeting at the courthouse had been called. With others I went to attend the same and soon the hall was crowded. Several speakers had made their appearance to address those present. As soon as the first orator began to speak, he was interrupted by noise and hisses, and suddenly all the lights were extinguished. Pandemonium reigned. A mob thronged to the rostrum and seized the union flag which had been placed there. Quickly I rushed between the men and took the flag from them. I tore it from the staff and hid it under my vestcoat. During the melee I was shot in the leg and beaten over the head. While I was being taken to my home two old citizens knocked me over the head with their canes. The next morning, six men, heavily armed, came to my residence and ordered me, in the name of Jefferson Davis and the southern confederacy, to leave town at once, Nicholas E. Haerle, Lafayette County History

Quote #2 The colonel is an old man perhaps sixty years of age. He has served in the United States Army in 1812. His hair is white and thin, but the same spirit that caused him to take up arms in defense of our liberties in 1812 animated him today. And to listen to an old father calling his children to the rescue is indeed one of the most affecting things I ever heard…I know not that I was ever more affected than when they were marching off when they passed me on the street and raising the covering of their wagon gave one long and loud shout, to Kansas and asked me to come, excerpt from Erasmus Hix memoirs
