REQUEST MEDICAL EVACUATION

I. INSTRUCTIONAL INTENT:

THIS PERIOD OF TRAINING IS DESIGNED TO PREPARE DEPLOYING UNITS ON PROPER FORMAT FOR REQUESTING A MEDICAL EVACUATION REQUEST USING NINE LINE FORMAT.

II. TRAINING OBJECTIVE:

AS A RESULT OF THIS INSTRUCTION THE SOLDIER WILL KNOW THE FORMAT FOR A NINE LINE MEDICAL EVACUATION REQUEST AND PROPER RADIO TRANSMISSION.

ACTION: REQUEST MEDICAL EVACUATION.

CONDITION: GIVEN AN ORDER TO REQUEST MEDICAL EVACUATION OF A PATIENT, PATIENT PICKUP SITE, OPERATIONAL COMMUNICATION EQUIPMENT, MEDICAL EVAC FORMAT, A STANDARD MAP, A GRID SCALE, AND UNIT SOI.

STANDARD: TRANSMIT MEDEVAC REQUEST AND PROVIDE ALL NECESSARY INFORMATION AS REQUESTED.

• DURING YOUR DEPLOYMENT ACCIDENTS CAN HAPPEN TO YOU OR ONE OF YOUR FELLOW SOLDIERS

• THIS IS WHY YOU NEED TO KNOW HOW TO USE PROPER FORMAT / TRANSMISSION OF A NINE LINE MEDEVAC REQUEST

• DURING THIS PERIOD OF INSTRUCTION WE DISCUSS THE FORMAT / TRANSMISSION OF A MEDEVAC REQUEST AND DO A PRACTICAL EXERCISE

• LINE 1-5 MUST BE TRANSMITTED DURING INITIAL CONTACT WITH THE EVACUATION UNIT, WITHIN 25 SECONDS

NINE LINE MEDEVAC REQUEST FORMAT

• LINE # 1: 8 Digit Grid Coordinate of the Pickup Site- Encrypt grid coordinates. To preclude misunderstanding, a statement is made that grid zone letters are included in the message (unless Unit SOP specifies its use at all times).

• LINE # 2: Radio Frequency, Call Sign and Suffix of the Requesting Unit- Encrypt the frequency of the radio at the pickup site.- The call sign (and suffix if used) of the person to be contacted at the pickup site may be transmitted in the clear.

NINE LINE MEDEVAC REQUEST FORMAT

• LINE # 3: Number of Patients by Precedence

- PRIORITY A – URGENTPatients should be evacuated within a maximum of 2 HOURS in order to save life, limb or eyesight.

- PRIORITY B – URGENT SURGICALPatient should be evacuated within a maximum of 2 HOURS and must receive far forward surgical intervention to save life and stabilize for permanent evacuation.

• LINE # 3: Number of Patients by Precedence

- PRIORITY C – PRIORITYPatients should be evacuated within 4 HOURS to prevent their medical condition from deteriorating to such a degree that he or she will become an Urgent procedure.- PRIORITY D – ROUTINEPatients whose medical condition is not expected to deteriorate and the patient should be evacuated within 24 HOURS.- PRIORITY E – CONVENIENCEIs assigned to patients for whom evacuation by medical vehicle is a matter of medical convenience rather than necessity.

If 2 or more categories are reported in the same request, insert the word “break” between each category.

- A – None

- B – Hoist

- C – Extraction Equipment

- D - Ventilator

NINE LINE MEDEVAC REQUEST FORMAT

• LINE # 5: Number of Patients by TYPE- Report only applicable information and encrypt brevity code. If requesting MEDEVAC for both types, insert the word “break” between the litter entry and ambulatory entry:

- L + # of Patients = Litter- A + # of Patients = Ambulatory

- L = Litter- A = Ambulatory

• LINE # 6: Situation Wartime and Peacetime

Wartime Situation:- N = No enemy in the area- P = Possible enemy in the area (approach with caution)- E = Enemy troops in the area (approach with caution)- X = Enemy troops in the area (armed escort required)

Peacetime Situation:- Specific Information regarding patient wounds by type (gunshot or shrapnel).- Report serious bleeding, along with patients blood type, if known.

Which side up (bright orange or violet)- B – Pyrotechnical Signal

- Number of Patients in each category need not be transmitted

MEDEVAC PROCEDURESPractical Exercise #1

Your Squad has encountered a Minefield while patrolling Route 1A. While conducting self-extracting procedures from a minefield the point man sets off a mine. He has the following injuries: He is missing his right forearm from the elbow down, and is in shock from loss of blood. The combat lifesaver has performed immediate first aid and the casualty is ready for evacuation. During the self-extraction the U.S. civilian on your squad starts to have a heart attack.

The squad has moved out of the minefield. The squad leader informs you that the pickup site will be at PK 15644587. The site will be marked by a VS-17 panel. Your Call Sign is A Team and the MEDEVAC unit is DUSTOFF. The pickup site is in a large open field.
