Lesson 7: Visual Elements in Microsoft PowerPoint 2013
PROJECT
Scenario: In this project, you will continue to work with the presentation for Kelly Greenery. You
practice working with shapes and objects by stacking, grouping, rotating, duplicating, aligning, and
distributing. Your also begin work on a combined shape. You will also combine shapes to create a
stylized tulip, and further modify and adjust shapes and objects in the presentation.
Directions:
1. Navigate to the class web page and download the Planting.pptx and save it to your
Computer Concepts folder.
2. On slide 1, insert a text box and type your first and last name in it.
3. With slide 1, displayed, select the light-brown rectangle and then, on the DRAWING
TOOLS FORMAT tab, click Selection Pane to display the Selection pane in the Arrange
group.
4. Click the Send Backward arrow in the Selection Pane until the rectangle is behind the
title text.
5. In the Selection pane, click Picture 5 and click the Send Backward arrow in the
Selection pane until the leaf is behind the title text.
6. In the Selection pane, click Picture 7 and click the Bring Forward arrow in the
Selection pane until the leaf is in front of the light brown rectangle and behind the title
text.
7. Rotate the red leaf in the lower-left corner of the slide by dragging its rotation handle to
give it a different orientation and drag it to underneath the title placeholder.
8. Select the orange leaf near the upper-left corner of the light-brown rectangle and then
click Picture Tools Format > Rotate > Flip Horizontal, as shown in Figure 7-1.
9. Close the Selection pane.

10. Display slide 3. Select the two clip art illustration in the lower-left corner of the slide, and
then click Picture Tools Format > Group > Group.

11. With the group sill selected, press CTRL + C, and the press CTRL + V four times to
create four copies of the group.
12. Drag the last copied group to the right side of the slide, using the Smart Guides to make
sure it is aligned at top and bottom with the original group.
13. Drag the other three groups to space them across the bottom of the slide,
14. Select all five objects, click Align > Align Bottom > and then click Align > Distribute
Horizontally, as shown in Figure 7-2.

15. Click the group of two light gray triangles and drag them over the top of the pink oval, so
that the group aligns with the oval at the top and the center.
16. With the group selected, click Drawing Tools Format > Group > Ungroup.
17. Select the pink oval; and then select each gray triangle.
18. Click Drawing Tools Format > Merge Shapes > Fragment. The three shapes are
broken into components.
19. Click outside the pink oval to deselect the shapes, click each of the four pieces that
originally made up the triangles, and press DEL to delete these partial shapes. as shown
in Figure 7-3.

20. Save the presentation.

21. Display slide 3, if necessary.
22. Select the pink jagged-topped tulip flower and change the fill color to Dark Green.
23. With the Dark Green jagged-topped tulip flower still selected, select the vertical blue
stem and align them at the center.
24. Select the blue tulip leaf shape and rotate it about half an inch to the right, and then move
it until the bottom tip of the leaf overlaps the bottom of the stem.
25. Select the flower, the stem, and then leaf in that order and merge the shapes. Click
DRAWING TOOLS FORMAT tab, then in the Insert Shapes group, click the Merge
Shapes arrow, and select the Union option.
26. With the combined shape selected, apply the Perspective Diagonal Upper Right shadow
shape effect.
27. Drag the title placeholder near the tulip shape and use the Smart Guide to align the
placeholder with the top of the shape. The use Align Center to center the placeholder on
the slide.
28. With the placeholder still selected, copy and then paste the placeholder shape. Remove
the text from the pasted shape.
29. Use the Eyedropper to fill the blank shape with the same green as the combined tulip
shape, and then send the blank shape behind the original placeholder to create a shadow
effect.
30. Flip the daffodil bulb picture horizontally, and then middle align the three bulbs.
31. Use the Smart Guides to center align each bulb’s label with the bulb picture, and then
align the labels at the bottom.
32. Group each bulb with its label, and then distribute the groups horizontally. Your
finished slide should look similar to Figure 7-4.
33. Save the presentation.
34. Print the presentation as a TWO SLIDE HANDOUT.
