A Hard Day’s NightDir: Richard Lester1963

Record company making a promo film for a band.

Bands working with a quality film director and supporting actors.

The Beatles playing themselves almost in a spoof of themselves with a mixture of performance and narrative. Light-hearted, comic approach.

Top of the Pops (BBC)Pre-dates Radio 1. Made by the BBC and originally broadcast weekly between 1 January 1964 and 30 July 2006.• Originally where people would find

out what was No.1• Record companies would try and get

artists on there• If not possible (eg a US artist) you

would either have a performance recorded elsewhere or the song played and Pans People etc dancing around in the studio

• Videos started to be made in order to get your band on as many commercial programmes as possible.

Help!Dir: Richard Lester1965- Still an album

promo- But much more

arty and conceptual

- Not just a promo for the music but demonstrating the power of the artist

The Monkees

• Daydream Believer• http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nU615FaODCg

Totally fabricated US band Styled on the Beatles with anglo-centric reference.

Good quality production values. Total control and cultivation of the artist by industry.

From this to Simon Cowell!

Was a sit-com series which was made to sell the band.

Early example of convergence.

• As the Beatles became hugely famous and had more control they started to make their own videos with them in control

• Quality started to deteriorate

Emphasised the role and skill of the music film director.

(1972)

Started as a mime artist. Made entire as a character (Ziggy Stardust, Jean Genie)and created artisticvideos based aroundcharacters with use of changes in technology.

• 1975

Video becomes as important as the music as an artistic creation in its own right.

1975Seen as one of the most significant music videos.Breaking convention of video length. Effects and technical innovations. Bands start to gain power and see themselves as video artists as well as musical artists.

1989Like a PrayerMadonna

-Went to No.1 in UK and USA-Was controversial due to the use of religious iconography and sexual metaphors in the video.

1994Dir: Spike Jonze- Famous video for

Best music videos of the past few years?

Your task: Significant Moments in Music Video

How is YouTube changing music videos?

All of the examples we have looked at are pre-YouTube.

Make a list of the ways in which you think YouTube has changed music videos. Think about: - Who can make them- Who can watch them- The format of them (eg. Content/length?)- How it can promote artists- How it can use existing content

Recent developments?

2005 onwards

Launch of YouTube

Now… 60 hours of video uploaded every minuteVevo (portal within a portal?) 55bn hits in 2013

How do you watch music videos? On your phone? YouTube? TV channels? Via a portal (Facebook/Twitter) etc...How did you in the past?

Beyonce (2014)• Beyonce released

her 5th album entirely through the release of music videos – no promotion, no teasers or news releases. These were released before the physical copy.

Power of the music video? Shape of things to come? Power of the artist? Gimmick?

YouTube and music videos

• Not confined by length, format or content. Videos can get ‘banned’ from TV but how effective is that in an internet age?) Previously, videos (with some exceptions) would have to consider the slot they would get on MTV, VH1, TOTP etc

• Can be viewed worldwide: increase artist audience• Record company/artist/promotional company can get more

accurate data of who their audience is • Videos can be instantly shared on social media etc• Versions of music videos can mean there are several unofficial

music videos which• Music videos can be ‘re-found’ and recycled later continuing the

appeal/promotion of an artist or video
