The story of Esau and Jacob

Isaac married Rebekah (Rebecca), and she bore him twin 20 years later, Esau and Jacob. Since

Esau was a few minutes older, he had his birthright, that is, he had the first right to inherit Isaac‘s

power and possessions. Isaac liked Esau better, while Rebekah (Rebecca) favored Jacob.

As the boys grew, Esau became a skillful hunter and wandered in the field all the day long, while

Jacob was a quiet man and liked to stay at home. One day Jacob was cooking pottage when Esau

got home. Esau had been out hunting and very hungry. But Jacob refused to give him any pottage

unless he promised to give up his birthright. So Esau ―sold his birthright for a mess of pottage.‖ But

he had no attention to keep his promise.

When Isaac became very old and almost blind, one day he told Esau to hunt some game, cook

the meat and bring it to him to eat. He wanted to give Esau his final blessing before he died. Rebecca

overheard the conversation. She told Jacob to kill two goats, and cooked the meat. Then she told

Jacob to bring it to his father, pretending to be Esau, so that Isaac could give his blessing to Jacob,

instead of Esau. To fool Isaac, Jacob put on his best clothes of Esau, and Rebecca put the skins of

the goats on the arms and neck of Jacob, for Esau was a hairy man, while Jacob has smooth skin. In

this way, Jacob received the blessing from Isaac.

UNIT 2: ART, MUSIC, DESIGN

Is Fashion a Form of Art?

A. The Royal Academy of Arts is one of the most prestigious art galleries in the world. Some

years ago, when the director, Norman Rosenthal, was asked if he would ever stage a fashion

show there he replied, ‗Over my dead body‘. But times are changing. Since 2000, when the

Guggenheim Museum in New York put on an exhibition about famous fashion designer Giorgio

Armani, other museums, galleries and art houses have given fashion exhibitions of their own

and the Royal Academy of Arts is among them. Are these symbols of high culture simply

selling out and cashing in on the growing ‗fashion‘ for fashion? Or is there something to be said

for fashion's claim to be a true art form?

B. The answer to this question depends on how we define ‗art‘. Some people say that because

fashion has a practical use as clothes, it cannot be considered an art form. They say that art

should not be used for practical purposes. But this argument doesn‘t really hold water; after all,

many museums display ancient bowls, plates and pieces of jewellery that were used every day

by people in olden times. In addition, a beautifully designed and elegant appliance, piece of

furniture or even a house is often considered a form of art.

C. Another argument that is often put forward is that the purpose of fashion is to buy and sell

clothes, and that ‗true‘ art should not be concerned with making money. This argument is just

plain ridiculous! Firstly, many world famous paintings and sculptures, such as the Mona Lisa,

were commissioned, or paid for, by wealthy people of the time. Pope Julius II paid

Michelangelo for the ceiling in his new and beautiful Sistine chapel, and this is now one of the

most famous art works in the world. Secondly, once painters have established a name for

themselves as great artists, their work is often bought and sold for huge sums of money. After

all, painters have to eat too, and pay the rent! If we try to separate art from the rest of life, we

run the risk of making it boring and irrelevant to most people.

D. People have argued for centuries over what can and should be included under the definition

of art. The real test, perhaps, is whether society as a whole decides that something is an art

form. Here, too, the tables have turned. Newspapers, TV and other news media now recognise

that fashion is important to our culture, and fashion has become a respected industry, just the

same as film, journalism, theatre and literature. In universities and academies, where art theory

has traditionally been taught, both research and teaching of fashion's history, construction and

style have blossomed.

E. The world's oldest known piece of art – a series of criss-crossed engravings produced

70,000 years ago – has been described as ‗just doodlings‘ by a researcher from the University

of Arizona. Over the centuries, these scratchings and finger paintings evolved into the

beautiful murals and wonderful landscapes that we all know and love today. Fashion is no

different. From ordinary beginnings, it has been developed to a point where it has a significant

place in the world of art, and where its real creativity can be acknowledged and enjoyed by all.

Female: Wait. You‘re not going out like that, are you? I thought you threw that shirt out. Last time you

went out wearing that, all your friends laughed at you, didn‘t they?

Male: That was months ago. I think it‘s fine now. I saw someone on TV with the same shirt, so it can‘t

be that bad.

Female: Just because you see a celebrity wearing it doesn‘t mean it‘s in fashion now. What show

was it?

Male: That police drama in New York.

Female: But that takes place over 50 years ago! Don‘t you realise that fashion changes? You can‘t

always live in the past, especially if you don‘t want your friends to laugh at you again.

Male: Oh. What if I changed my pants or put a nice jacket on?

Female: No. If you want to be seen in public with me ever again, that shirt will find its way into the

garbage where it belongs. No pants or jacket could make it look good.

Male: Look, I‘ll change into a better shirt, but I won‘t throw it away. I‘ll put it in the top of my closet.

You just wait and see. One day it will be popular again and you‘ll be glad I kept it.

Female: Okay. As long as you change now!

Father: There‘s a sale downtown today at that clothes shop you always go to, isn‘t there Jill?

Daughter: Yeah, but I won‘t be going. I don‘t have any money at all.

Father: Didn‘t you just get paid yesterday, at your part-time job?

Daughter: I did, but the problem is I had already asked for that money early, so I could go shopping

last week, so I actually didn‘t get any at all yesterday.

Father: That‘s my daughter. Always two steps ahead of herself! What will you do for the next couple

of weeks?

Daughter: That‘s what I was hoping to talk to you about.

Male: I‘m sorry miss. This section of the museum is closed today.

Female: Oh no! I was looking forward all week to seeing that painting by Rembrandt that‘s on

display.

Male: Unfortunately there‘s a water leak in this part of the building and they can‘t display the

painting while it‘s so wet in here.

Female: Any idea when it‘ll be back on display? It‘s only here for another few days, isn‘t it?

Male: Yes, but I heard that the problem will be fixed tomorrow. If you go to customer services, you

can get 50% off your next visit because of the inconvenience.

Text 3

Female: Professor, I think I‘ve found something over here in the dirt.

Male: Let me see. Yes you have. It appears to be a bowl of some kind. Brush it off a bit.

Female: It looks like there are some markings on it or an animal of some kind. I wonder if it‘s really

old.

Male: Ah. Well, brush a bit more here and I think you‘ll see what it is.

Female: Okay. Oh. Well it looks like Mickey Mouse. How could he be on some ancient bowl?

Male: He‘s not. Unfortunately, that bowl is most likely 10 to 20 years old. Sorry. No big discovery this

time.

Text 4

Female: Tim, don‘t forget about that assignment due tomorrow. Your last one was late.

Male: Um … which one is due tomorrow?

Female: My goodness! The report on our museum visit on Monday ...

Male: Oh, right. Ah … so what exactly were we supposed to do for that? I‘m sure I wrote it down

somewhere.

Female: Okay. Sit down and let‘s go over it again. And this time, be sure to listen and write it down.

Text 5

Male: And over here you will see our most famous exhibit. It‘s a bowl which was used over 10,000

years ago and is one of the earliest pieces of art that we know of from our area.

Female: Excuse me. But why is it considered art? It‘s just a bowl, isn‘t it?

Male: True … but if you look closely, on the side of the bowl there are markings that show different

animals and trees. Now, these serve no purpose for people if this is only a bowl. Most bowls we use

today are much plainer.

Female: Okay. So it‘s the decoration on the bowl that makes it art?

Male: That‘s right.

Activity 3

Female: Welcome everybody to our city‘s biggest museum. Here we focus on Anthropology, which

is the study of different cultures around the world. Our museum has a variety of exhibits from many

different areas in the world, but most of them are from the city itself, spanning the period from 50 to

500 years ago. Here you‘ll find a variety of objects used by the people who lived in the area, which

show us many things about how they lived. For example, you‘ll see a range of old clothing, from

which we can learn how important fashion was through the years. Some examples of clothes are

Page 17: Lesson 4 - file.xueersi.comfile.xueersi.com/handout/201110/13191894407916.pdf · most famous art works in the world. Secondly, once painters have established a name for themselves

plain and very simple, which shows they were mainly used for everyday work. Other examples are

extremely elaborate, with a great deal of decoration and colour, showing that this clothing had more

significance and was probably used for rituals or holidays. The same can be said of the bowls,

plates and even the houses that have been found. We can see which objects were seen as art and

which weren‘t. If a culture spent a lot of time decorating something as simple as a bowl, then it might

really be considered a piece of art.

Activity 4

Male: Hello. I need to buy something for my daughter Jasmine, but I really have no idea what to get.

It‘s her birthday tomorrow – she‘s going to turn 16.

Female: Don‘t worry. Give me some details. What kind of clothes does she like?

Male: I know she wears a lot of blue jeans and printed T-shirts with something written on them.

Female: Well, that‘s a start. Does she follow current fashion at all?

Male: Not really, she‘s more interested in music.

Female: Right. How about her height and weight?

Male: She‘s about 150 centimetres tall … and not so thin but not too heavy either. Just average

weight, I guess.

Female: Well, let‘s look at blue jeans first. This pair will fit girls from 140 centimetres and up. They are

the same as those worn by a teenage singer who‘s in the spotlight these days. What do you think?

Male: If you think a 16-year-old would like them, I‘ll take them.
