Standard Notation
• Each place is 10 times the place to its right • each period, or group, is divided into ones, tens,  hundreds
• Each period is separated by a comma

95,000,000,000,000 Let's take a closer look...
What are some patterns that you see above? • each place is ________ the value to its right • each group is divided into 3 places • each group is separated by a comma
What number would be... • 10 times greater than 95,000,000,000? • 1/10 times as great as 95,000,000,000?

Create a place value chart on your whiteboard.   Write the number as the teacher reads it to you.
CC 2.1  Large Numbers  CJ.notebook
11
Expanded Notation
• A number is written as the sum of the values of  its digits
345 = 300 + 40 + 5
12
(1 * 10,000) (9 * 1,000) (6*100) (3*10) (6*1)

NumberandWord Notation
Significant digits  followed by a word for the place value  of the largest period
63,800,000 = 63,800,000  =   63.8 million
1. Choose the largest period group 2. Replace the comma with a decimal 3. Write down any other digits to the right of the
decimal 4. Write the word for the largest period
