Analyse this! (Paragraph 2)Restrictions are placed on advertisements to prevent, or at least, to downplay the negative repercussions of advertising on societys moral values. These restrictions are able to prevent unethical merchants who would stop at nothing to obtain the attention they want for their advertising campaign from exploiting controversial graphics and taglines that can be offending to people of society. These may include the use of soft pornography, explicit expressions and racist references. If these unethical advertisements were to be allowed on the media, young children and teenagers would be influenced negatively in their moral upbringing due to the constant exposure of these people to the advertisements, causing a brainwashing effect. Moreover, such offending advertisements would prompt outrage from the public, magnifying the repercussions of the issue. While a group of people would launch protests that could turn violent in relation to the content of the advertisement campaign, another group of people would be further deluded, assuming the fact that such content being spread through the media would signify the societys acceptance, pulling them deeper into their obsession with offending materials. Therefore, advertisements have to be bound by certain restrictions so that negative repercussions on society are minimized.Paragraph 3Restrictions are also placed to prevent popularizing demerit goods. Demerit goods are goods that would not have a positive influence on the society, such as alcohol and cigarettes. Because of the medias wide reach, cigarette advertisements are not allowed at all in some countries, such as Singapore. If the glorification of cigarettes were allowed, many impressionable teens and adults would pick up the habit of smoking. The harm of smoking is evident; it causes lung cancer and other respiratory diseases, therefore the habit of smoking should not be encouraged through allowing advertisements of cigarette brands to be aired. Thus, restrictions have to be placed on advertisements to prevent the popularization of these demerit goods.Paragraph 4Restrictions are also necessary to protect consumers. This is so as the restrictions prevents advertising companies from over-glorifying their products and services. The regulation ensures that all facts and figures are correct and consumers would not be bombarded with false information. Therefore, they are also able to make the right choice. The necessity of these regulations can be seen in the context of Singapores case of the sale of a slimming product which has caused a death of a consumer of the product. The advertisement campaign was highly aggressive and consumers were led to believe the product to be effective. However, the product was actually unsafe for consumption due to the inclusion of a banned drug. This goes to show that these industry players need to be controlled through stricter regulations on advertisements in order to protect the consumers. This does not merely apply to sliming products. In Britain, telecommunication companies are required to present their prices of their subscriptions clearly and media watchdogs ensure that there are no hidden costs. This protects the consumers form later having to pay more for the product and services than they expected to. Therefore, the placement of these restrictions is important to protect the consumersHow to write the conclusionRefer to notes.Do it yourself!Write your own essay outline on The world is getting smaller but not closer.
