Achievements of Ancient Greece
Last Time We Met….Alexander the Great conquered a great empire that included Greece, Persia, Mesopotamia and Egypt.
Hellenistic Culture was mostly influenced by the Greeks but also included pieces of Persian, Syrian
and Egyptian cultures.
Alexander is credited with spreading Greek culture to a large area beyond the Greek peninsula.

Architecture• Columns are the key
feature of all Greek architecture.
• Columns standing in a
long row look curved in the middle.
• To correct this optical illusion, columns were made to bulge in the middle which made
columns look perfectly straight!

The ancient Greeks invented acting in plays.They also invented the two basic types of
drama; Comedy and Tragedy.
PhilosophyPhilosophy is the love and pursuit of knowledge.

Socrates• The greatest of the Greek thinkers.
• Believed people should never stop looking for truth.
• One of the greatest teachers of the past.
• Socrates taught by constantly asking questions of his students.
• Today, this style of teaching is called the Socratic Method.
ScienceEuclid made great discoveries in math and geometry.
Hippocrates made great discoveries in medicine. His ideas are still used today
and doctors still take the Hippocratic Oath.
Much of Westernsociety is based on
the ideas of the AncientGreeks.
