    Lesson 1 Gods Faithfulness

Discussion Questions: What is your favorite attribute of God? Why? How do you decide to trust someone?

    Introduction

God is the only true God (Isa 45:5, 21-22; 46:9; Joel 2:27; John 17:3). He is awesome and amazing. His ways are

beyond our ways and His thoughts are beyond our thoughts (Isa 55:8-9).

5I am the LORD, and there is no other; Besides Me there is no God. I will gird you, though you have not

    known Me; Isaiah 45:5

21Declare and set forth your case; Indeed, let them consult together. Who has announced this from of old? Who

has long since declared it? Is it not I, the LORD? And there is no other God besides Me, A righteous God and a

Savior; There is none except Me. 22

Turn to Me and be saved, all the ends of the earth; For I am God, and

there is no other. Isaiah 45:21-22

9Remember the former things long past, For I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is no one

    like Me, Isaiah 46:9

27Thus you will know that I am in the midst of Israel, And that I am the LORD your God, And there is no

other; And My people will never be put to shame. Joel 2:27

3This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent. John

    17:3

8For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways, declares the LORD.

    9For as the

heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways And My thoughts than your

    thoughts. Isa 55:8-9

God has provided a self revelation in His Word so that we may know Him within the limitations of our finite minds.

The attributes of God can be categorized multiple ways, but are generally broken into two main groups: those that

belong to God alone (divine) and those that are in some way found in man (personal). Gods divine attributes include:

self-existence, unity, infinity, eternality, immutability, omnipresence, sovereignty, omniscience, and omnipotence.

Gods personal attributes include: justice, love, truth, freedom, holiness, lovingkindness, compassion, grace,

faithfulness, longsuffering, and wrath. We must understand that all of Gods attributes or characteristics are perfect

and that they all meld together to show us Gods character.

In our current study, we will focus on Gods sovereignty. We can define Gods sovereignty as: God is the supreme

ruler in control of all events. All things are under His rule and control, and nothing happens without His direction or

permission. He works all things (not just some things) after the counsel of His own will (Eph 1:11). God's purpose is

all inclusive and is never thwarted (Isa 46:11). Nothing takes Him by surprise.

11also we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to His purpose who works all things

after the counsel of His will, Eph1:11

9"Remember the former things long past, For I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is no one like

    Me, 10

Declaring the end from the beginning, And from ancient times things which have not been done,

Saying, 'My purpose will be established, And I will accomplish all My good pleasure'; 11

    Calling a bird of

prey from the east, The man of My purpose from a far country Truly I have spoken; truly I will bring it to pass.

I have planned it, surely I will do it. Isa 46:9-11

However, in my opinion, before we study sovereignty we must first lay a foundation concerning Gods faithfulness.

Understanding Gods faithfulness moves us to complete submissiveness to His sovereignty.

Gods faithfulness is explained as: God will always do what He has promised to do. He is steadfast, unchanging,

perfectly reliable, and utterly dependable. He is 100% reliable, 100% of the time.

He not only advances and confirms that which is true, but in faithfulness abides by his promises, and executes

every threat or warning he has made. Lewis Sperry Chafers Systematic Theology

Far above all finite comprehension is the unchanging faithfulness of God. Everything about God is great, vast,

incomparable. He never forgets, never fails, never falters, never forfeits His word. To every declaration of

promise or prophecy the Lord has exactly adhered, every engagement of covenant or threatening He will make

good, for "God is not a man, that He should lie; neither the son of man, that He should repent: hath He said, and

shall He not do it? or hath He spoken, and shall He not make it good?" (Num. 23:19). A. W. Pink

Because God is faithful, He can be completely trusted. Because He is faithful we can fully submit ourselves to His

    sovereignty.

The apprehension of this blessed truth will beget increasing confidence in God. When we trustfully resign

ourselves, and all our affairs into Gods hands, fully persuaded of His love and faithfulness, the sooner shall we

be satisfied with his providence A. W. Pink

    Gods Faithfulness

    1. Faithfulness is part of Gods character

9Know therefore that the LORD your God, He is God, the faithful God, who keeps His covenant and His

lovingkindness to a thousandth generation with those who love Him and keep His commandments; Deut 7:9

4The Rock! His work is perfect, For all His ways are just; A God of faithfulness and without injustice,

Righteous and upright is He. Deut 32:4

4For the word of the LORD is upright, And all His work is done in faithfulness. Psa 33:4

9God is faithful, through whom you were called into fellowship with His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. 1 Cor

    1:9

24Faithful is He who calls you, and He also will bring it to pass. 1 Thess 5:24

3But the Lord is faithful, and He will strengthen and protect you from the evil one. 2 Thess 3:3

13If we are faithless, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself. 2 Tim 2:13

    2. The Scriptures declare that Gods faithfulness is:

Great (abundant in quantity, size, age, number, rank, quality)

22The LORDS lovingkindnesses indeed never cease, For His compassions never fail.

    23They are new every

morning; Great is Your faithfulness. Lam 3:22-23

    Incomparable

8O LORD God of hosts, who is like You, O mighty LORD? Your faithfulness also surrounds You. Psa

    Infinite

5Your lovingkindness, O LORD, extends to the heavens, Your faithfulness reaches to the skies. Psa 36:5

    Unwavering

33But I will not break off My lovingkindness from him, Nor deal falsely in My faithfulness. Psa 89:33

    Established

2For I have said, Lovingkindness will be built up forever; In the heavens You will establish Your

    faithfulness. Psa 89:2

    Everlasting

89Forever, O LORD, Your word is settled in heaven.

    90Your faithfulness continues throughout all

generations; You established the earth, and it stands. Psa 119:89-90

6Who made heaven and earth, The sea and all that is in them; Who keeps faith forever; Psa 146:6

    3. Gods faithfulness is displayed in:

    Forgiving sin

9If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all

    unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9

    The permanence of our salvation

7so that you are not lacking in any gift, awaiting eagerly the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ,

    8who will

also confirm you to the end, blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9God is faithful, through

whom you were called into fellowship with His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. 1 Cor 1:7-9

24Faithful is He who calls you, and He also will bring it to pass. 1 Thess 5:24

3But the Lord is faithful, and He will strengthen and protect you from the evil one. 2 Thess 3:3

23Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful; Heb

    10:23

    Trials and discipline

75I know, O LORD, that Your judgments are righteous, And that in faithfulness You have afflicted

    me. Psa 119:75

Provision in times of trial, temptation, and suffering

13No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not

allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape

also, so that you will be able to endure it. 1 Cor 10:13

19Therefore, those also who suffer according to the will of God shall entrust their souls to a faithful

Creator in doing what is right. 1 Pet 4:19

    His providence

1O LORD, You are my God; I will exalt You, I will give thanks to Your name; For You have worked

wonders, Plans formed long ago, with perfect faithfulness. Isa 25:1
