worship consists not in words on the lips

but in deeds from the heart

    - authentic worship means doing good and

    ISAIAH 1:11-17

What care I for the number of your sacrifices? says theLORD. I have had enough of whole-burnt rams and fatof fatlings; In the blood of calves, lambs and goats I findno pleasure. When you come in to visit me, who asksthese things of you? Trample my courts no more! Bringno more worthless offerings; your incense is loathsometo me. New moon and sabbath, calling of assemblies, octaves with wickedness: these I cannot bear. Yournew moons and festivals I detest; they weigh me down,

I tire of the load. When you spread out your hands, Iclose my eyes to you; Though you pray the more, I willnot listen. Your hands are full of blood! Washyourselves clean! Put away your misdeeds frombefore my eyes; cease doing evil; learn to do good.

Make justice your aim: redress the wronged, hear'

ISAIAH 58: 1-10Cry out full-throated and unsparingly, lift up your voice like a trumpet blast; Tell my

people their wickedness, and the house of Jacob their sins. They seek me dayafter day, and desire to know my ways, Like a nation that has done what is just

and not abandoned the law of their God; They ask me to declare what is due

them, pleased to gain access to God. "Why do we fast, and you do not see it?

afflict ourselves, and you take no note of it?" Lo, on your fast day you carry out

your own pursuits, and drive all your laborers. Yes, your fast ends in quarrelling

and fighting, striking with wicked claw. Would that today you might fast so as tomake your voice heard on high! Is this the manner of fasting I wish, of keeping a

day of penance: That a man bow his head like a reed, and lie in sackcloth and

ashes? Do you call this a fast, a day acceptable to the LORD? This, rather, is

the fasting that I wish: releasing those bound unjustly, untying the thongs

of the yoke; Setting free the oppressed, breaking every yoke; Sharing your

bread with the hungry, sheltering the oppressed and the homeless;Clothing the naked when you see them, and not turning your back on your

own. Then your light shall break forth like the dawn, and your wound shall quickly

be healed; Your vindication shall go before you, and the glory of the LORD shall

be your rear guard. Then you shall call, and the LORD will answer, you shall cry

for help, and he will say: Here I am! If you remove from your midst

oppression, false accusation and malicious speech; If you bestow yourbread on the hungry and satisfy the afflicted; Then light shall rise for you in

I hate, I spurn your feasts, I take nopleasure in your solemnities; Your

cereal offerings I will not accept, nor

consider your stall-fed peace offerings.Away with your noisy songs! I will not

listen to the melodies of your harps. But

if you would offer me holocausts, thenlet justice surge like water, and

    goodness like an unfailing stream.

    MATTHEW 12: 8 13

Moving on from there, he went into their synagogue.

And behold, there was a man there who had a

withered hand. They questioned him, "Is it lawful to

cure on the sabbath? so that they might accusehim. He said to them, "Which one of you who

has a sheep that falls into a pit on the sabbath

will not take hold of it and lift it out? How much

more valuable a person is than a sheep. So it islawful to do good on the sabbath. Then he said

to the man, "Stretch out your hand." He stretched it

out, and it was restored as sound as the other.

To adore God is to acknowledge, in respectand

absolute submission, the "nothingness of the

creature" who would not exist but for God. Toadore God is to praise and exalt him and to

humble oneself, as Mary did in the Magnificat,

confessing with gratitude that he has donegreat

things and holy is his name. The worship of the

one God sets man free from turning in on

himself, from the slavery of sin and the idolatry
