Notes from Father Joseph -
Bible in a Year: As I mentioned at Mass last
weekend, a wonderful way to actually
encounter Christ is to pray using the
Scriptures. A great resource is Fr. Mike
Schmitz’s new podcast which goes through
the entire Bible in 365 episodes. Even if you didn’t start
on January 1
st
, all the episodes are archived and so you
can begin at any time. A link to the podcast can be found
on the parish website (btcatholic.us) or on our Facebook
page.
Epiphany Blessing: Many Catholics use the Epiph-
any as an occasion to bless their homes. You’ve probably
seen the blessing: a cryptic series of letters and numbers
inscribed in chalk over a doorway. I wanted to take this
opportunity to explain this great little tradition. The
formula for the blessing is simple: take chalk of any color
and write the following above the entrance to your home:
20 + C + M + B + 21. The letters C, M, B have two
meanings. They are the initials of the three Magi: Caspar,
Melchior, and Balthazar. And they are also an
abbreviation of the Latin words Chritus mansionem
benedicat – “May Christ bless this house.” The “+” sign
represents the Cross and 2021 is the year. Taken
together, this inscription is a request for Jesus to be a
daily guest in our home, our comings and goings, our
conversations, our work and our relaxation, our joys and
our sorrows.
“Chalking the door” is a great way to dedicate our
year to God from its very outset, asking His blessing on
our homes and on all who live, work, or visit them.
Practicing traditions like chalking the doors help us to live
our faith more concretely and it serves and an outward
sign of our dedication to Our Lord. Our homes are the
places where many of us will make the most significant
strides in our spiritual growth; through our observance of
daily prayer, spiritual reading, and work offered to God.
Instructions for Blessing your Home:
Using chalk, mark the lintel of your front door as follows
20 + C + M + B + 21 while saying:
The three Wise Men, Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar
followed the star of God’s Son who
became human two thousand and twenty years ago.
May Christ bless our home and remain with use
throughout this new year. Amen.
Then offer the following prayer:
Visit, O blessed Lord, this home with the gladness of
your presence. Bless all who live or visit here with the
gift of Your love; and grant that we may manifest Your
love to each other and to all whose lives we touch.
May we grow in grace and in the knowledge and love
of You; guide, comfort, and strengthen us in peace, O
Jesus Christ, now and forever. Amen.
I hope that all of our homes are places where we will con-
tinue to know, love, and serve God this new year.
Peace,
Fr. Joseph Baker

Frassati Fest — Sunday February 7th
Frassati Fest will look a lot different this year but we
are hopeful and plan to provide a fruitful, faith filled
and fun event for the teens. I am partnering with Lisa
Enerson (CRE Divine Mercy Parish) and Matt Holly
(Youth Minister at St. John and St. Luke) to make this a
spectacular day with youth from around the area! We
will host at St. Aloysius, Sauk City, and there will be a
minimal (if any) charge for the event! We will have pre-
recorded talks, testimonies and games as we share our
witness and love to Christ to each other! More details
and registration coming soon. Contact Geno Finn for
more information at [email protected] or 592-5711
