Imagine for design #1

Idea # 1

Our materials are white cloth, felt, and foam

We need 1 unit of each material.

The advantage of this idea is that they are all good insulators.

The disadvantage of this idea is that the white clothe won't absorb the heat it will bounce it.

Idea # 2

Our materials are foam, and white cloth

We need 1 unit of foam and 2 units of whit cloth.

The advantage if this idea is that the foam will keep the heat in.

The disadvantage of this idea is that the white cloth will not absorb the heat.

Create for design # 1

Our heat score is our solar oven maximum temperature subtracted from the control oven: 71 c - 55 c = 16

Our time score is the number of minutes it took to cool down which was 3 minutes.

Our total impact score was + 8 points.

Our total score for the solar oven is 11.

Improve for design # 1

The total score for our first solar oven was 11 points.

The parts of our solar oven design that workers well were the insulation because it kept a lot of heat in.

The parts of our solar oven design that did not work well was the white cloth because it didn't keep that much heat in.

We are going to try to improve our heat score and our impact score.

We will improve our heat score by using dark color cloth instead of the white one because dark colors absorb the heat.

Create for design #2

Our heat score is our solar oven maximum temperature subtracted from the control oven: 64-56= 8

Our time score is the number of minutes it took to cool down which was 2 minutes.

Our total impact score was 8 points.

Our new total score for the solar oven is 2

Reflection

Our improved design did not work well because it did not keep most of the heat in. The materials we changed was only the cloth. The material was good because it absorb the heat but it was a poor insulator because it didn't keep most of the heat in. We know this because when the solar oven was in the shade the temperature went down really fast.

If we could improve again, we would put back the white cloth because in our first design our total score was 11.
