MUNICIPALITY WORKERS FACE TERRORISM CHARGESSome Rustenburg Local Municipality employees could be charged with terrorism by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) after they illegally cut off some of the city’s electricity supplies during a strike. On 3 December, the workers at Rustenburg’s electricity department went on an illegal strike following the suspension of their foreman. It is understood that the striking employees went on to switch off electricity at Zinniaville power supply station, leaving the better part of the municipality without electricity.According to the municipality, the affected areas were: Rustenburg Industrial, Rustenburg CBD, Zinniaville, Karlienpark, and sections of Seraleng, Rustenburg East and North, Safarituine, Cashan, Geelhoutpark, Protea Park, Tlhabane West and other areas within the outskirts of Rustenburg. In a statement released to the press late last week, the municipality revealed that it has opened a case of illegal public gathering and the contravention of the National Electricity Act with the Rustenburg Police.“We are also considering a terrorism charge against the concerned employees. The docket has also been sent to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) for a decision,” said the municipality in a statement. The municipality said the police is cooperating fully and has dedicated resources to the investigation so as those responsible face the might of the law.“We are also aware of the alleged plan by faceless people to render the municipality ungovernable. It has also come to our attention that other sections or departments are currently being mobilised to take part in these illegal activities. “We have deployed additional security to protect key municipality properties such as substations and other municipal buildings,” said the municipality. The municipality said that it is disappointed that the employees did not follow proper bargaining channels to address their grievances. “We apologise for the inconvenience caused to local businesses during this period. We are appealing for calm within Rustenburg communities as we continue to work with SAPS to help restore law and order to the municipality.”Reached for comment, South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) however said it is shocked to learn of the latest development.“We don’t know anything. We see the statement you are talking about pasted everywhere in the building. We were not engaged,” said SAMWU Rustenburg local branch secretary Neville Moitse. Moitse said they will be engaging the municipal manager to get the answers. Although he said he was aware of the suspension of one of their members at electrical department, Moitse however said none of their members was involved in an illegal strike.

PLATINUM PEOPLE

TUELO MOTS UM I

As a praise singer, 33-year-old Tuelo Motsumi is making a name for himself in the North West province with his captivating performances during important events involving leading government officials and politicians.Based in Mahikeng, Motsumi has – on a number of occasions – been invited to perform at a various ceremonies and launches and has always succeeded in adding colour to the occasion. On 4 December, he once again captivated the audience with a poetic recital that he used to introduce the premier of the North West, Supra Mahumapelo. This was during an event held to mark the launch of the Mahika-Mahikeng Music and Cultural Festival. “I enjoy my performances and I always put a lot of energy and effort into them whenever I perform,” Motsumi told Leseding News.“The performances that I do reflect on our culture as Setswana people and they are very important because we must continue to preserve our culture so that it remains relevant in all the things that we do.“I am used to performing before a large group of people because I have been involved in what I am doing for many years now,” he added. Born in the Magogoe area of Mahikeng, Motsumi is today one of the most sought after praise singers in the country. “For me, it is important for a person to show passion for the work that one is involved in. This is what drives me. I have been nominated on

two occasions for the SATMA awards and I believe that if I continue to work hard I will win an award soon,” he said. He has performed around South Africa and has also been invited to many countries, some of them outside Africa. “I have travelled to many countries and I thank God for the opportunities that I continue to get in this line of work. I have been to Germany, Senegal, South Korea, Taiwan and other countries as well. “It has been an eye opening experience for me and I am happy with the way that I have been received outside South Africa,” he said. Motsumi called upon the youth to respect their culture and always remember where they come from. He said: “These days we have a lot of music that young people enjoying listening to. We have hip hop and other forms of Western music that have a huge following among young South Africans. “Our duty is to talk to these young people and make them remain conscious about their culture, about where they are coming from and where they are going. They must respect this because this is who they are. “I am a very passionate person when it comes to our culture and this is why I always go to great lengths to safeguard our heritage.” He called upon the corporate sector to support artists and cultural events. “The work that I do involves a lot of travelling and it can become very expensive. Private companies, the government and other well wishers must really look into helping us through sponsorships. This would really help us to supplement some of the costs.” He encouraged young people interested in following in his footsteps to work hard and to remain grounded and humble. “This can be a very fulfilling occupation but success is only achieved through hard work, learning and staying rooted and focused,” he said

year-end message for 2014Mayor’s December marks the end of a very important year in the history of democracy. Permanent footprint has been cemented in the lives of the communities of Moses Kotane Local Municipality across all 107 villages and two twonships through service provision and good governance. We complete the year 2014 with much pride of preliminary Auditor General’s unqualied opinion for the Municipality. This is the legacy we intend maintaining as the current management and more so as it coincides with 20-celebration of democracy wherein South Africans are encouraged to tell their stories. We are indeed telling good story of the Moses Kotane Local Municipality being one of the top ve municipalities in Bokone Bophirima Province.

December 2014 marks the 14th year since establishment of the Moses Kotane Local Municipality in 2000. The road we have travelled thus far describes a blend of a rich history, worthy experiences and milestones which will be packaged for all to know and preserve and for the coming generations as a good story to tell during our demo-cratic era.

I am very fortunate to have been part of the team that named this municipality after one of the most sought after and a rare nd of an intellect, Rre Mauane Kotane who originates from Pella village. I have always felt that He is an international icon and a brand that resonates well with beacon of hope. We are still guided by ideals he stood for today and I urge all the people who originate in our jurisdiction to join us in our quest to provide excellent and quality services to communities we serve. Decisively make your contribution…

We are mapping out way to strategically use our resources to make an impact and stimulate the economy of the Moses Kotane Local Municipality for it to be surely a caring and responsive

municipality that is best to live in, work for and do business with.Join us as we reclaim our glory as trend-setters in the local government arena.

Have blessed festive season and be with us as we welcome 2015 as the year of trend setting!!!!!

The Rustenburg Local Municipality has appealed to motorists and other road users to strictly observe traffic laws during the festive holidays so as to minimize the increased fatalities that become common during this time of the year. The festive season between December and January has been cited as the period in which a number of fatal road accidents are experienced in the country. It is against such a background that the Rustenburg municipality intends to reverse this trend by making drivers and pedestrians to maintain their alertness while on the roads. “We cannot stress the importance of observing the traffic laws, especially during the festive season,” Lebo Makete, Rustenburg Local Municipality Acting Communications Manager, told Leseding News in an interview. “We would like to advise drivers not to drink and drive. It has been found that this habit causes a number of accidents during the holidays. All road users must also be alert during the holidays. Everyone must do their bit to make sure that we all return form the holidays safely,” she added. She revealed that a campaign will be held at the Rustenburg taxi rank to encourage drivers to prioritise safety while on the raods. “The aim is to create awareness for drivers and pedestrians. We have a lot of drivers who drink and drive. “We also have a lot of pedestrians who drink and do not exercise caution. They also become a dsnger to themselves and to others. This campaign is meant to highlight the importance of observing safety precautions. “We have been working with the Royal Bafokeng Nation and SAPS. There will be a number of roadblocks during the festive season. The aim is to reduce road accidents and fatalities,” Makete added. She also urged residents intending to leave the city for various holiday destinations to make sure that their homes are well secured. “We are in the process of fast tracking the repairing of streetlights in areas such as Bester where there have been blackouts. We hope that this will reduce the possibility of crimes since there will be increased visibility in the area,” she said. “We would like to urge the parents to be on the lockout for their children during the holidays. During the festive season, there is an increase in the number of cases of abandoned children and we would like to urge parents to be more responsible and careful with their children.”
