You already know how to use direct object pronouns:

The direct object answers the question, « what? »
I eat what? I eat the sandwich (le). He likes what? He likes movies (les).You read what? You read the book (le).
Some verbs in French do not take a direct object- they take an indirect object.
Indirect objects answer the question « to what? » or « to whom? »
Je téléphone à ma mère.Il parle au prof.Tu prêtes le crayon à ton ami.
These verbs are usually followed by the preposition à (sometimes seen as « au » or « aux »)
