What is the Vitruvian Man?!Leonardo Da Vinci believed that the sketch of the Vitruvian showed the proportions of the
human body. Each separate body part was a part of the whole. For example, the head
measured from the forehead to the chin was exactly one tenth of the total height, and the
outstretched arms were always as wide as the body was tall. Leonardo Da Vinci had not
created these ideas. However, he got inspiration and information from different writings of the
Roman architect Vitruvius. These two men believed that the principals of the sketch should be
considered during the process of creating buildings. Leonardo wanted to take his idea to
another step, he spent most of his life trying to find out connections between the human body
model and other patterns related to nature. He noted that Man is the model of the world. A
negative impact that the Vitruvian man created on Da Vincis theory wassquaring the circle.
This part includes drawing a circle and square which contain the same area without any form
of calculations. People protest that the diagram presents that Da Vinci had a deeperunderstanding of the situation, which other experts were not able to improve until future
generations.

Our TaskIntroduction:
In this task we have created our own version of the
Vitruvian
man to relate and compare
Vitruvius's
theory and
proportions with my model. In this t
ask we measured the
fractions and ratios of our
Vitruvian
person to compare them
to the
Vitruvian
drawing to compare and conclude weather
our fraction
s and ratios are similar to the theory. For
example, we viewed and measured the mans arm span and
the mans
height and it was a positive calculation. This can
help us
compare human proportions in the 1500s to the
present day.

Are your fractions/ratios similar
to Vitruvius?
My vers ion o f the Vi t ruv ian man most ly
contains di f ferent propo rt ions and rat ios to
Leonardo Da Vincis Vitruvian man. However,
my rat ios and propor t ions are very sim i lar toeach other and very c lose to the correct
solut ion.

If you have fractions/ratios that are NOT similar to
Vitruvius, why do you think they are different?
The ratios are not similar to each other as they are not
fixed with a constant number, they keep on changing. For
example 4.8 and 4.26 are not similar ratios which would
conclude that they would not equal to a proper
fraction. Also my version of the Vitruvian man was a
small model. In the actual Vitruvian sketch they used a
man who was more elderly and tall.

If you have fractions/ratios that are SIMILAR to Vitruvius, what does that tell us
about human bodies now compared to human bodies in the 1500s? What if
they are not not similar?
A severe change can be seen in the bodies of the 1500s and the bodies today. We are open to
more opportunities and to getting tasks done through machines and not using the mentalpart of our brains today. However, in the 1500s people had to do everything physically and
they had to take more action as in that time machines were not invented. The Vitruvius
sketch and my own version of the sketch can compare the bodies of the 1500s to today as in
our time my partners body might have changed to be less physical and the food we can
access is also very different to the food we were able to eat in the 1500. In the 1500 people
were more nutritious and they had not much variety on meat as they had to grow their owncrops to make food. However, in this era people now have so much variety in food which can
affect our health. These are just a few reasons on why the comparison between bodies in the
1500 and bodies in this era with the help of the Vitruvian man.

What did you learn about fractions/ratios and the human
body?Throughout the task of the Vitruvian man I learnt many new ideas and
information that has helped me develop my thinking about the Vitruvian
man and how it affects human bodies. I also learnt that Leonardo Da Vincis
theory was proved to be correct in some stages as different bodies have
different structures and angles. However, in my version with my partner we
were not able to prove that his theory was correct in our case. I also learnt
the reason on why it might have not been correct with the help of the
1500s bodies question. I learnt that in some cases it can be true and provedas positive. I also learnt on how the Vitruvian man is related to the golden
ratio which Leonardo Da Vinci discovered and as the golden ratio applies to
not only mathematical situations but also art, architecture, music and
nature. In this case the Vitruvian man sketches and calculations should be
considered to be used in other situations and not only mathematics.
