In his National Day Rally speech, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong

mentioned that we could all do our part to improve our homes with technology. Any one of us with a smartphone can play a part in keeping our town clean and safe.

During the past nine months, the Town Council received more than 43,000 feedback messages via the six channels listed on the next page.

We got more than 6,700 reports from residents in September alone: 1,488 by email, 281 by iConnect, the rest by phone, EMSU and over the counter.

Play your part in keeping Ang Mo Kio clean and safe, make sure you report any item that needs our attention.

For example, Ang Mo Kio Town Council, my own, has iConnect to report estate maintenance issues and residents take a picture, they send the picture in, the Town Council deals with it.

committee to see what improvements could be made. A change of flooring tiles and better barbecue pits were among the suggestions made – pos-sibly during an NRP in future.

All 151 playgrounds the Town Council manages are important. Taking feedback from residents, the RC and the Town Council rebuilt the old playground at Block 617 Hougang Avenue 8 to better suit their wishes. Completed in a year and a half, most agree it’s now safer and, more importantly, greater fun.

“Wait police come,” was not quite a joke for those of us who like

to sit at the pavilion at Block 225. There was no lighting, and anyone sitting in the dark looks suspicious.

The police did come to investigate! Fortunately through our feedback, and

with the help of Palm View RC and Town Council, solar-powered lighting was installed at the pavilion with great results.

There are also plans to install more panels to power the fans and lighting area. Here’s to going green.


Plant a seed and nurse it well, and it can grow into a sturdy tree. That’s

what happened with the construction of the new community garden be-tween Blocks 405 and 406 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 10.

Interested gardeners, working with the grassroots and the Town Council, turned the unusued space into a neat garden. There are paved walkways, seating, gardening facilities...everything a gardener could want. As part of its

Community Gardens are built when residents work together with their

grassroots, the Town Council and NParks. Today, there are some 55 such gardens in the town, and this year, 25 of them took part in NPark’s annual Community in Bloom competition.

Three of these gardens won Platinum awards, twelve took gold, seven won silver and three, bronze. A special Diamond award went to the Yio Chu Kang Zone 8 and Seletar Hill West NCs, for winning Platinums three years in a row!

The Town Council supports the community garden on its initial setup by building the fence, preparing the planting soil and other minor infrastructure like footpath and concrete slab.

My First School won a Gold Award.

Community Partnership Programme, My First Skool, at Block 209 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3, worked with Ang Mo Kio Town Council on a “Gardens by the Skool” project.

The Town Council installed a tap for the garden. This was a saver as the tap kept the garden alive during the months of the dry spell. It also made it easier for the elderly resident gardeners to water the plants in the garden.

Gardens by My First Skool won a Gold Award at the Community in Bloom Awards 2014.

Together with officers from the Town Council, HDB and the Police, Dr Lam Pin Min visited Block 408B Fernvale Road as part of his routine estate walk on 15 October. Going door to door, they spoke with many residents and gathered feedback on estate and conservancy matters.

Tenth in a “Share It” series:

Over 200 students from Nanyang Polytechnic were joined by

students from five primary and secondary schools in an effort to Stomp Out Dengue in July. They visited flats, checked for stagnant water, and even painted anti-dengue murals at the void deck.

Ang Mo Kio Town Council was one of the partners in the project. We are heartened to see students taking the lead in promoting dengue awareness.

Bringing home the message with a bit of fun, the event ended with a carnival at Block 540, Ang Mo Kio Avenue 10, with games, perfor-mances, and educational booths.

Lebih 200 pelajar Politeknik Nanyang telah disertai oleh pela-

jar-pelajar daripada lima sekolah rendah dan menengah dalam satu usaha untuk Menghapuskan Denggi pada Julai. Mereka melawat flat, periksa tempat-tempat air bertakung, dan malah melukis mural-mural anti-denggi di kolong flat.

Majlis Bandaran Ang Mo Kio adalah satu daripada rakan-rakan usaha

dalam projek ini. Kami berbesar hati melihat para pelajar mengorak lang-kah untuk menggalakkan kesedaran mengenai denggi.

Untuk menyampaikan mesej ini dengan sedikit keseronokan, acara tersebut berakhir dengan sebuah karnival di Blok 540, Ang Mo Kio Avenue 10, dengan per-mainan, persembahan, dan pondok pendidikan.

At Lentor station groundbreaking

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong officiated the ground breaking cer-

emonies of the Lentor and Mayflower stations on 6 September. The two sta-tions are on the Thomson-East Coast Line and should be ready by 2020.

Mr Lee said the Lentor MRT station will bring schools, work places and amenities much closer to home, and make public transport even more convenient and attractive to residents in the Yio Chu Kang area.

As to the Mayflower station, Mr Lee said it will become a touch-point for the Kebun Baru neighbourhood.

Besides, residents in Ang Mo Kio will benefit from the upgrading of the signalling system of the North-South line. More trains can be added during peak periods when the works are done by 2016, said Mr Lee.

Mr Lee said with the Bus Service Enhancement Programme, our bus services will also be improving with 1,000 more buses by 2016.

Residents signed the pledge to foster close working relationship and strive to overcome any challenges collectively so that the project can complete on time.

李总理补充说，到了2016年，我们将在巴士服务改进计划下增加1000辆巴士，使我们的巴士服务大为改善。

Encik Lee berkata stesen MRT Lentor akan membawa sekolah, tempat kerja dan kemudahan lebih dekat dengan rumah, dan membuat pen-gangkutan awam lebih mudah dan menarik lagi kepada penduduk di kawasan Yio Chu Kang.

Mengenai stesen MRT Mayflower, Encik Lee berkata ia akan menjadi tempat untuk penduduk berhubungan antara satu sama lain bagi kejiranan Kebun Baru.

With the haze back in Singapore, the Town Council took steps to

protect the health and safety of its team of cleaners. On 15 October, Mr Ang Hin Kee, Adviser to Cheng San-Seletar constituency, met with the management of the conservancy company in charge of the cleaners to ensure measures were in place for their protection.

Mr Ang observed an anti haze drill for conservancy workers and com-mented that overall readiness was high with few areas left for improvement.

If the PSI reaches 100, cleaners need to wear the N95 masks they have been given while they work. And if the PSI reaches 300, they are not to carry out any cleaning outdoors. Their supervisors will also ensure the clean-ers get enough rest, and drink water.

After about a year’s work, the upgraded park at Jalan Selaseh

was much welcomed by all when it re-opened in September. Children throng the new swings, slides, merry-go-round and spiderweb ropes. A new basketball court, jogging track and fitness stations see heavy use. And the nice walks the residents missed are back – only nicer. The Seletar Hills NC is already intending to organise events for the residents at the park!

After an elderly resident of Regentville was hospitalised following an ac-

cident with a cyclist, the NC of the estate stepped up their efforts. The East Gate had always been a blind spot for cyclists and pedestrians, and after much consultation with the LTA and Mr Yeo Guat Kwang, a solution acceptable to all was implemented, as you’ll see below. Though it looks simple, there are now far fewer accidents – and many more happy residents.

With potholes plaguing the uneven ground of the grass field at

Leban Park, it was impossible to navigate – especially when they filled with rainwater. After some site exami-nations and with the help of NParks, only the affected area was paved over to become a concrete hard court in July. As much of the original greenery as possible was preserved, and now, residents can all enjoy big gatherings in front of the amphitheatre.

Under an effort of the Social Service Office @ Ang Mo Kio, the Central

Singapore Community Development Council fumigated several homes in four blocks in our town to get rid of

bedbugs at the end of August. Other than the pest professionals,

students from National Junior College and the Town Council’s Community Liaison team also helped.

They worked with the Town Council’s property officers and conservancy workers to dispose of bulky refuse – mattresses and furniture that had been infested with bedbugs.

pada akhir Ogos, Majlis Pembangunan Masyarakat Singapura Sentral telah mewasapi beberapa rumah di empat blok dalam bandar kita untuk meng-hapuskan pijat.

Selain pekerja-pekerja firma peng-hapus serangga perosak, para pelajar

daripada Maktab Rendah Kebangsaan dan pasukan Perhubungan Masyarakat Majlis Bandaran ini juga memberi bantuan.

Mereka bekerja dengan para pegawai hartanah dan pekerja penyenggaraan Majlis Bandaran untuk membuang sampah-sampah besar – tilam-tilam dan perabut yang diremuti pijat.

While repairs were made to a leak-ing underground pipe at Fernvale

Link in August, the water supply to levels two through four of Block 413B had to be shut off. To ensure minimal disruption to the residents, the Town Council provided an external supply of water, and also deployed conservancy workers to help carry water to the flats. After repairs were done, a property officer made sure each unit’s water supply was fully functioning.

In case of similar situations, resi-dents should call Town Council hotline at 6453 0511 or EMSU 1800-241-7711 after office hours.

While the water supply was disrupted, Town Council workers delivered water to the homes affected.

The disruption to the water supply was solved as quickly as possible.

Keep Clear, Keep SafeThrough par tnership with the

Business Liaison Committee, the Town Council is able to clear obstructed walkways with the cooperation of shop owners. Shop owners are allowed to purchase outdoor display areas if they choose – but some areas, clearly marked, are strictly to be kept clear.

With these No Display Areas, residents will notice that our neigh-bourhood centres are less obstructed and cluttered. This ensures ease of movement for pedestrians, cleaners, and in emergencies, evacuations. It also keeps the neighbourhood free of fire hazards.

If you see these No Display Areas in use, report them. Everyone benefits when they’re kept clear.

Clutter like this should be cleared as soon as possible.

Clear, clutter-free walkways benefit everyone, and are a joy to use.
