Page 1: LENT SCHEDULE Tuesday, March 9th

As we begin the 3rd week od Lent, we may need

a word of encouragement with our resolutions.

We may even be looking for something more or

different to do. Here are some suggestions.

GIVE IT UP FOR LENT - Giving up something we like

during Lent can be a reminder of the importance of

God in our lives. Every time we refrain from eating

candy, watching television, drinking alcohol or doing

something else we enjoy, we have an opportunity to

express our desire to love and draw near to God.

A ROSARY-A-DAY IN LENT - A simple but powerful

practice is praying the rosary. In its prayers and

mysteries, the rosary fosters contemplation on the life

of Christ. It only takes about twenty minutes a day.

CHANGE THE STATION - The Stations of the Cross can

be prayed with a group or privately—even at home.

As the Stations remind us of the harsh reality Jesus

endured for us, they increase our compassion for

those who suffer today.

BE RECONCILED TO GOD - As Lent encourages us to

take an honest look at our lives as Christians, it is a

perfect time to receive the Sacrament of

Reconciliation. It not only helps us face the truth, it

assures us that God, through the Church, grants us

healing forgiveness.

GIVE THANKS - We may not think of Lent as a time of

thanksgiving, but think about it: God became human

in order to make it possible for us to share in His own

divine life. In this holy season, Christians gather with

the whole Church to take seriously and celebrate

that great gift. Who wouldn't be grateful?

We are almost half way through Lent. A special word of

gratitude to all of our wonderful volunteers who work the Fish

Fry and all the hungry people who come to support us.

Join us for the Stations of the Cross, Wednesday Mass at noon

or one of the many Lenten opportunities we have here at St.

Thomas the Apostle!

St. Patrick's Day is almost upon us. This was Kathy's very special

day of the year. Her roots were very Irish, with a family tree that

goes back to Galway. If I have any Irish in me, someone in my

past has a lot of explaining to do.

Kathy and I did visit Ireland in 2001. In fact, we were the first

commercial flight out of the U.S. after 9/11. We hesitated

about going, but decided that the airports would be the safest

they would ever be. I will say it was a bit disarming to see a

young woman in her mid-20s, dressed in military fatigues, with

an attack dog on a leash and a sub-machine gun over her

shoulder, standing guard. That is an image that tends to stick in

a person's mind.

We did manage to make it to Blarney Castle and kiss the

Blarney Stone. That's not an east fete. To kiss the stone, a

person has to hang backwards and upside-down. An Irish

gentleman of substantial girth and weight is happy to sit on a

person's legs for a tip. I let Kathleen Ann Bernadette Sullivan go

first.

My big memory of St. Patrick's day is the infamous snow storm

of gigantic proportions. I'm 71 and counting and still waiting for

the storm. The snowstorm is a major urban myth from what I

can see. Of course, now that I've poo-pooed it, I'd lay in extra

food. For the record: the largest snowstorm in Detroit history

came in April, long before there were suburbs.

I've gotten back into the walking groove. I've made it back on

to Hines Drive. Surprisingly, the snow had not melted or

retreated much and there was a lot of flooding on the

pathway. It felt good to go walking without boots. Did not see

any animals, except for some geese, which seem to be every

where.

Don't forget the food pantry. Don't forget the right to life play-

pen.

Right to Life—Lifespan Baby Shower March 13 and 14

We are participating in the Right to

Life drop-in baby shower again this

year. You can put items you would

like to donate into the baby playpen

in the gathering space of the

Church. Your donation helps

bringing a new life into this world a little easier. Acts of Spiritual Communion

It has long been a Catholic understanding that

when circumstances prevent one from receiving

Holy Communion, it is possible to make an Act of

Spiritual Communion which is a source of grace.

Spiritual Communion means uniting one’s self in

prayer with Christ’s sacrifice and worshipping

him in his Body and Blood. The most common

reason for making an Act of Spiritual

Communion is when a person cannot attend

Mass. Acts of Spiritual Communion increase our

desire to receive sacramental Communion and

help us avoid the sins that would make us unable

to receive Holy Communion worthily.

A prayer for Spiritual Communion My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the Most

Holy Sacrament. I love you above all things and I desire to receive you

in my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive you

sacramentally, Come at least spiritually into my heart.

I embrace you as if you were already there

And unite myself wholly to you. Never permit me to be separated from you. Amen.

Current food pantry needs

include: cans of soup,

ravioli, Manwich or beef

stew; grape or strawberry

jelly; laundry soap; paper

towels.

The food pantry is open every Thursday from

10am-12pm in the Ministries Building. If you would

like to receive items from the pantry, please call

(734) 425-9771.

We pray for our beloved

FISH FRY… AWESOME!

Thank you to everyone who supports

our “World Famous Fish Fry”. We are

having our Fish Fry every Friday during

Lent including Good Friday.

I can’t say thanks enough to all the

people that have been donating homemade baked

goods! Everything has been scrumptious! Keep them

coming every Friday after 7am in the Activities

Building!

We are averaging about 340 dinners per week and

we want that number to go up each week! Please

tell your friends and neighbors about our “World

Famous Fish Fry” and encourage them to come in

and get a hearty dinner!

God Bless and see you at the Fish Fry!
