LENT
Lent is the 46 days before Easter, when we consider again what it means to follow Jesus.
• ASH WEDNESDAY (1 March)
We begin Lent by receiving ash on our foreheads to remind us of our frailty and weakness: ‘Dust you are, and to dust you shall return.’ Low Mass at 9.30am – High Mass at 8pm Preacher at the High Mass: the Revd Hilary Fife, Senior Chaplain at Croydon University Hospital
• STATIONS OF THE CROSS (Fridays 3 March – 7 April) Walk the path of Jesus to the Cross every Friday in Lent (5.30pm), accompanied by music and reflections.
• DESERT ISLAND FAITH (Sundays 5 March – 9 April) Every Sunday afternoon (5–6pm, refreshments from 4.30) we will hear from members of St John’s about their faith journeys and what inspires them. (See the sign-up sheet on the right-hand page.) Choral Evening Prayer follows.
• SPIRITUAL ACCOMPANIMENT
You are invited to take the opportunity this Lent to have regular conversations with a member of our pastoral team. As a prompt to discussion, we recommend trying the free ‘Pray As You Go’ app.
DESERT ISLAND FAITH Sundays 5 March – 9 April Our own faith and spiritual life is often hidden from others—we each pursue our own private relationship with God, as if we were on a desert island.
This Lent we are adapting the format of the radio show Desert Island Discs to enable us to hear from other Christians about their journeys of faith and what inspires them, with the aim of growing spiritually both as individuals and as a community.
For those who are able, we are requesting a £2 donation per session in aid of the Refugee Support Network. If you are interested in joining the Lent course, please fill in, detach, and return this form:

SPIRITUAL ACCOMPANIMENT Lent is an opportunity to consider our own spiritual life and our own journeys as disciples of Christ.
Members of our pastoral team are available this Lent for conver-sations about life, faith, and spirituality. We recommend you try the free app ‘Pray As You Go’, which may prompt some quest-ions for discussion, but we would be happy to meet to talk with you whether you are using the app or not.
Fr John and Fr Daniel would be particularly happy to meet with you, but there is a wide team of clergy and lay people who would also be willing to see you, including Fr Andrew, Fr Tom, Rob Barber (Reader), and Berni Excell (Pastoral Assistant). If you are interested in being ‘spiritually accompanied’ during Lent, please fill in, detach, and return this form:

HOLY WEEK
The last week of Lent is called Holy Week, when we remember the events of the last week of Jesus’s life.
• PALM SUNDAY (9 April)
Commemorating Jesus’s entry into Jerusalem, the High Mass (10am) begins with a procession with palms. At 6pm there is a service of music and readings for Passiontide.
• MONDAY OF HOLY WEEK (10 April)
Mass at 8pm, followed by a Healing Service.
• TUESDAY OF HOLY WEEK (11 April) Mass at 8pm, followed by Stations of the Cross.
• WEDNESDAY OF HOLY WEEK (12 April)
Mass at 8pm, followed by Tenebrae (music & reflection).
• MAUNDY THURSDAY (13 April) We welcome our guest preacher, Fr
Hugh Wybrew, and remember the Last Supper with High Mass at 8pm, after which the church stays open for prayer before the Blessed Sacrament until midnight.
• GOOD FRIDAY (14 April)
The Liturgy of the Passion at 12 noon, marking Jesus’s death on the cross. If you would like to come to lunch afterwards, please register ([email protected]).
EASTER
Easter is the 50 days when we celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus and the new life God gives to his people.
• EASTER EVE (Saturday 15 April)
Jesus was raised during the night, and so we begin celebrating at 8pm on Saturday. The Easter candle is lit from the new fire, and the story of salvation is proclaimed.
• EASTER DAY (Sunday 16 April)
High Mass is celebrated at 10am, followed by a community lunch in the hall, to which all are welcome (please register: [email protected]). Evensong at 6pm.
• CHILDREN’S EASTER WORKSHOP (Tuesday 18 April)
Bring your children to celebrate Easter with games, crafts, and activities from 9.30 to 12.30, concluding with lunch. Please let us know ([email protected]) if you plan to come. If you are able, we would appreciate a donation of £1.50 per child.
• EASTER TUESDAY TO SATURDAY (18–22 April)
To celebrate the Resurrection, there is a mass every day at 10am (9.30am on Wednesday) with a short homily.
Normal services continue throughout Lent and Easter: • on Sundays o Morning Prayer at 9.15am o High Mass at 10am, with Diddy Disciples for children o Choral Evensong at 6pm (in Lent, Choral Evening Prayer)
• on weekdays o Morning Prayer at 9am (except Easter Monday) o Evening Prayer at 5pm (except Easter Monday) o Mass on Wednesday at 9.30am o Mass on Saturday at 10am (except Easter Eve)
You would be most welcome at any of these services, at our regular meditation sessions, at the Upper Norwood Hive on Wednesdays, or at anything else we run. See our website (sjun.org.uk) for more details.
We mark the end of Easter with two special celebrations: • ASCENSION DAY (Thursday 25 May)
To celebrate Jesus’s return to his Father after 40 days, there is a High Mass at 8pm.
• DAY OF PENTECOST (Sunday 4 June)
Easter concludes with a celebration of the sending of the Holy Spirit on the Church: High Mass at 10am and Evensong at 6pm.
