LegendLennox ForestStandard conifers speciesAlternative conifer speciesMixed broadleaves/conifersNative broadleaf speciesOpen/OtherForest RoadsProposed Forest Road ExtensionPathWatercourse

Western 'arm' of the forest surrounded by open groundWhen possible the remaining strip of windblow on thenorthern edge will be felled and replaced with diffusebroadleaves eventually feathering into mixed woodlandthen conifer to soften the hard edge of the forestimproving views.

Very few thicket-stage crops present on siteDiversify the age range of the forest through design, species choice, management approach (thinnings)retentions and rotation lengths to create more variedhabitats..

Several pockets of mature/veteran treesLook to enhance areas more approriate for longerterm retentions such as the sheltered northernslopes and broadleved FHN's by enhancing thesenetworks and increasing stand stability throughthinnings. Current unstable retentions should befelled.

70% of existing woodland is Sitka spruce, reducingspecies diversity and limiting resilienceContinue the use of pure SS and SS/ALP nursingmixtures on the poor soils of the western arm of theforest and take the opportunity in the future todiversify the better soils of the main blockpredominantly using NS, DF as well as native MBwhilst also carefully considering the wider landscapeand how the forest sits within it.

South Braes SSSI and Loch Ardinning NatureReserve situated immediately east and west ofthe forest respectively.Maintain open habitat east of nature reserve andminimum intervention management west of SSSIbenefiting the respective neighbouring habitats.

Good forest road network within the site means thatmost coupes are within economic reach of standardharvester/forwarder combination.Develop the exiting road network eastward along theridge allowing improved access to the far northwest ofthe forest both for future felling but proposed futurethinning operation and therefore LISS managementaspirations.

Area around Drum Plantation classed as LEPOFocus on retaining/replanting native broadleaves along Baldown Glen burn and the burn runningimmediately to the west enhancing the DrumPlantation LEPO area within the landscape.

Lower slopes around the northern and southernboundaries are relatively shelteredAssign thinning regimes to the crops on shelterednorthern slopes in order to evaluate the futurepotential of these areas for conversion to LISSmanagement.

Much of the forest sits on exposed open plateauFacilitate more management flexibility and forestresilience by creating more wind firm edges atrestocking allowing more options for future coupedesign, access and biodiversity.

Wide range of other species (both conifer and broadleaf)currently present as minor componentsContinue the use of pure SS and SS/ALP nursingmixtures on the poor soils of the western arm of theforest and take the opportunity in the future to diversifythe better soils of the main block predominantly usingNS, DF as well as native MB whilst also carefullyconsidering the wider landscape and how the forestsits within it.

Important species present include Great CrestedNewt, Black grouse, Pine marten, SmallPearl-bordered Fritillaries and Green Hairstreakbutterflies. Continue to manage for and protect these speciese.g. as set out in species specific action plans such asRegional local Great Crested Newt Management Plan2015-2020 as well as specific guidance notes suchas GN35b Forest Operations and Great Crested Newts.

Several features of minor archaeological interest present. The heritage of mining for coal and limestone is stillvisible, with spoil heaps and old shafts widespread.Three of the boundary marker stones betweenBaldernock and Campsie Parishes have been located.Sites of limekilns have been identified on the S and Wedge of the main block. Clearance of conifers has/willallow these sites to be seen again and, proximity topublic access, low-key interpretation may becomepossible. Conifer planting will be kept a minimum of20m from all these features.

Several minor watercourse present within forestLook to create a riparian FHN between Glenwhappleand Baldrow Glen as well as enhancing other potentiallysignficant broadleaved networks where appropriate.Species choice will be W7 woodland type on mostareas, as soils are so fertile, as indicated in Bulletin112.

Several relatively well used Rights of Way/Core Pathspresent within the forestFLS Regional staff will continue to manage the pathnetwork and work with various user groups tomanage their activites (e.g. the recently developedCode of Conduct for Professional Dog Walkers. There is good potential in this forest to developco-ordinated safe use by various user groups.

Various ultilities are found within the siteUnplanted utility wayleaves will benefit SmallPearl-bordered Fritillaries and Green Hairstreakbutterflies.
