Time9–04 24-hour time uses 4 digits to describe the time of day and does not require a.m. or p.m. 0000 means 12 midnight, 0100 means 1 a.m., 1200 means 12 midday, 1300 means 1 p.m. and so on, up till 2300, which means 11 p.m.

EXAMPLE 4Write each time in 24-hour time.a 3:24 a.m. b 7:16 p.m. c 12.48 a.m.

SOLUTIONa 3:24 a.m. = 0324 in 24-hour time After 1 a.m., insert a 0 in front to make 4 digits.

b 7:16 p.m. = 1916 in 24-hour time After 1 p.m., add 12 to the hour: 7 + 12 = 19

c 12.48 a.m. = 0048 in 24-hour time 12 midnight is 00 for first 2 digits.

EXAMPLE 5Round 42 min 38 s to the nearest minute.

SOLUTION42 min 38 s ≈ 43 min. 36 s is more than 30 s (half a minute), so round up.

SOLUTIONUse a number line and ‘build bridges’ like we do for mental subtraction.

20 min + 5 h + 50 min

4:40 p.m. 5 p.m. 10 p.m. 10:50 p.m.

Time difference = 20 min + 5 h + 50 min= 5 h + 70 min= 5 h + 1 h + 10 min= 6 h + 10 min

OR: convert to 24-hour time and use the calculator’s or DMS keys.

SOLUTIONa Working backwards, if Khodr needs to be at Melanie’s house by 9:30 a.m., he needs to arrive

One train arrives at Springwood at 9:17 a.m., and from the timetable, it departs Central at 7:52 a.m.
