PAM COOPER’S PATHWAYS: Digging into the history of Fort Vinton (Part 3)

Post No. 2 officially changed to Fort Vinton in February 1850 and was named after Capt. John Rogers Vinton. In 1837, Vinton served during the Second Seminole War and, at one point, wanted to resign and enter the Episcopal ministry. He died in 1847 in the Mexican War and was never stationed at the post. Copies of his letters and artwork are available in the library’s Archive Center. Brevet Maj. Gen. Twiggs ordered all of the forts in South Florida to shut down May 1850. In 1855, engineers and surveyors went to the swamps of Florida to note all remaining Seminole villages. It was ordered not to provoke the Seminoles. However, some of the men stole crops and destroyed banana trees, which were thought to belong to Chief Billy Bowlegs. Unfortunately, the Army offered no apology or compensation. It resulted in the Third Seminole War and it lasted from 1855 until 1858. Based on compiled service records, the last known

conflict that involved Fort Vinton was in 1857 during the Third Seminole War. The John McNeill Company of Florida Mounted Volunteers posted (words are exactly as written) in their company return:“left Halpatiokee Swamps Apl. 1 & arrived at Fort Capron 4th, left Capron on 7th & arrived at Vinton 8th, left Vinton 10th marched to halpatiokee flats and swamp back to Vinton 19th left Vinton 20th marched north on the St. Johns some 40 miles and Cypress

swamps west & back to Vinton on the 29th.” The company continued to scout for Indians over the next several months using Fort Vinton as a place to stop and rest. Today, the area is a citrus grove and no known remnants or artifacts were ever found.

• As I’ve mentioned before, I’m a wannabe political consultant. That’s why I’m so fascinated by all of the maneuvering that already has taken place for the 2016 August primary. Next year’s Republican primary is shaping up to be one of the best ever in Indian River County. It’ll definitely be the best one since I moved here (in late ’06). All three races for County Commission will be highly contested. Which is a rarity – usually at least one race is a laugher, but not in ’16. The lineup thus far: District 1: Susan Adams vs. Jim Hill. District 3: Tim Zorc vs. Chuck Kirby and Mark Rodolico. District 5: Bob Solari vs. Jay Kramer. The two incumbents, Zorc and Solari, aren’t shoo-ins. They had only gadfly-level opposition in the 2012 primary.

Kramer, a member of the Vero Beach City Council, decided against running for State Representative. It’s going to be interesting to see how this race unfolds, as Solari has long pushed for the sale of the Vero Beach electric system to Florida Power & Light, while Kramer has been very effective in blocking FPL. In the District 3 race, at least Zorc doesn’t have to worry about facing Tony Donadio again. Donadio, who ran as an independent in ’12, told me last week he’s out for ’16. Sheriff Deryl Loar has raised $50,875 for his re-election bid. Talk about sending a message to potential opponents. As of now, his only opposition is Darrell Rivers, who has raised $5,290. I expect the race for Property Appraiser to result in the most yard signs in the county. Wesley Davis, who decided

(Davis expects both candidates to raise at least $40,000.)• The years-long construction on U.S. 1 between 4th Street to the county line has been aggravating for motorists and affected businesses alike. That’s why I groaned when I saw the notice for a June 2 public hearing for U.S. 1 improvements between 53rd Street and County Road 510. Take your time in starting this project, FDOT!• If you’ve traveled on 58th Avenue in recent weeks, then you’ve seen crews doing survey work. What’s up with that? “The county needed to obtain updated right-of-way information and, consequently, the surveys were ordered,” said Chris Mora, the county’s director of Public Works. “The right-of-way information will be used to develop future roadway and intersection improvements along 58th Avenue.” Mora says the county has “no definitive schedule” to

Enough with perpetuating statistically insignificant negative hype, he said. I see having vacant vacation rental homes as a lose-lose, and Fitz offered this as food for thought: “Having people in our vacation houses will have a positive effect on deterring burglaries.”• Pam Cooper loves to do research, but even she came up empty in trying to find the story behind “Lester Nathan Highway” – which is how Google sometimes refers to State Highway A1A. There are hidden treasures galore here in Indian River County. As a relative newcomer to the area, I recently discovered three more wonderful places. Hope you visit!

• Kiwanis-Hobart Park: Found on the Indian River County web page, this 95-acre park is located between Vero Beach and Sebastian (at 5350 77th St.). It is very peaceful and sure to please. Kids will love the large playground, adults will enjoy the long trail to drive or to bike, or even a healthy walk. Several pavilions surrounded by tall pine trees would easily hold a large event. A bridge will take you to the lake side, where one can sit and enjoy the view. But be wary, because the bugs like this park too! Especially the “no-see-‘ums.” Bring the spray! Ouch!• VNA’s thrift shops: The Visiting Nurse Association is a great program, helping thousands of people with their

in-home medical needs over of the years. They also have mobile units to care for those without insurance. Helping fund this much needed program are two wonderful thrift shops – first is the VNA Hidden Treasures thrift store in Vero (656 21st St.), where I made a furniture purchase, and then there is the sister store in Sebastian (11646 U.S. 1). Please consider making a donation to either one of these stores. Volunteers are always needed.• The Cheese Cave: I love cheese, do you? Well,

in Vero Beach there is The Cheese Cave (670 21st St.). Not only do they have marvelous types of cheese, but a variety of international wines and gourmet products. They also have homemade dishes, like lasagna – so no cooking tonight. Cheese lovers will delight in this cave! “Cheese” you there.
