Sebastian’s first settlers came from Germany. The area began as one of the oldest trading posts and fishing villages on the East Coast. August Park from Danzig, Germany, was the first to arrive in the area now known as Sebastian, in the late 1860s. He was contracted by the Florida Canning Company of New York to pack fish for northern markets. He built a house on Barker’s Bluff, a 100-foot tall Ais Indian shell mound, where he operated a turtle fishery and trading post. The bluff in south Sebastian along the Indian River no longer exists – it was sold in 1908 to help surface roads between Stuart and Micco. Attracted by the beauty and wildlife in the area, the Kroegel family made Sebastian their home in 1881. Charles Freidrich Gottlob Kroegel bought 143 acres on Barker’s Bluff from Park. He built a house and planted vegetables and orange trees around it, and raised bees. The family was said to have

planted the first orange grove in Indian River County. The village centered around a post office established in 1882 by Thomas New, a retired Methodist preacher.

He named the community Newhaven and became postmaster. English immigrant Sylvanus Kitching replaced him in 1884 and renamed it Sebastian. He set up a general store that had living and guest quarters and built a 1,100-foot dock on the river for steamboats.

Dixie Highway entered Sebastian around 1914. It went past the Sebastian Town Hall building, built in 1913, and the residences of Bamma Vickers Lawson and Stephen Vickers. These buildings still exist south of Main Street on U.S. 1 and are on the National Register of Historic Places. Sebastian was incorporated as a town in the 1920s.

Seven bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for Loren Lott to win “American Idol”:

• Whether you own a restaurant or are a regular customer, a good server is like gold. That’s why I wanted to start an unofficial “Servers Hall of Fame” for Indian River County. As mentioned previously, Elaine Huth and Sandy D’Amico – who started at Vincent’s in 1979 and 1981, respectively – were the first two inductees. This week, we’ll honor some more servers. Holly Tuinman, of Smokehouse Barbeque Grill (formerly Fat Boy’s), was nominated by Edith Campbell and Rosie Livings. Holly has been there for 36 years, which puts her No. 1 on the list for continuous service. Linda at Vic’s Pizza in Sebastian was nominated by Kevin Ciarlelli, one of her former co-workers. In May, Linda (she declined to give her last name) will celebrate 27 years there. And then there’s the crew at Bobby’s, which was nominated by Chuck Balnius. Talk about stability – Julie

Archer (33 years), Diane Baker (32 years), Cindy Mohr (32 years), Liz Wirth (32 years) and Genny Girard (30 years). Cindy Schwarz started at the Ocean Grill on July 22, 1984. During that time, she missed two years – she returned in 2006. Congratulations to all of the inductees! If you know a server who has been at the same restaurant for 25 or more years, please let me know.• An interesting tidbit about the aforementioned Holly Tuinman: She has two daughters working with her. Danielle Tuinman has been there 14 years, and Angela Tuinman has been there 10 years. There’s a photo of Holly and Danielle on LemmonLines.com.• Speaking of servers, Toni-Anne Chimel recently had a

“no good deed goes unpunished”-type experience. Toni-Anne, a server at Bob Evans, stopped in Publix early one morning to buy cupcakes and balloons for a customer in his 80s who was celebrating his birthday. A nice gesture, right? Well, she locked her keys in her vehicle. She called AAA, but the dispatcher estimated it would take more than two hours for someone to get there. (“That’s not happening,” she told the towing service, as she had to get to work. Thankfully, a friend came to her rescue.)• With the new traffic signals at 41st and 45th streets now activated, the first phase of construction on 66th Avenue is almost over. The next phase – widening 66th Avenue north of 49th Street – probably won’t start for a few years. A welcome break, if you ask me. Granted, despite all of the headaches it caused, it’s a vast improvement over the two-lane road. Just hope it doesn’t turn into the Autobahn.

• Good news for those who drive on 43rd Avenue on a regular basis: A new traffic signal is coming to 1st Street SW. (If you’ve ever tried to cross 43rd Avenue at that location, you know why I said it’s good news.) Chris Mora, the county’s director of public works, says the $1.6 million project probably won’t start until the second half of the year.• If I’ve been asked once, I’ve been asked 100 times: Am I going to do the out-of-state license plate count? Short answer: Not this year. Longer answer: I’ll be doing it on an informal basis, so feel free to let me know when you see a license plate from a state west of the Mississippi River, as those are always the hardest to find. • Harry Holland noticed my puzzled look when he said something he recently purchased came with a “lifetime guarantee.” Then, between bites of his breakfast scrapple at C.J. Cannon’s, the 80-year-old explained: “At my age, everything comes with a lifetime guarantee.”

Meet me at Table 51

Some trivia: Whether at Bob Evans or C.J. Cannon’s, Russ and his wife usually eat breakfast at Table 51. In what will be an occasional feature, Russ breaks bread with someone you may or may not know. It wasn’t easy finding common ground for a conversation with Mike Bass. After all, he is a world-class physicist and the guy interviewing him received a “D” in high school physics. He estimates there are only 20,000 physicists in the world. He said he knows of one other one in Vero Beach. Mike, 75, is a professor emeritus at the University of Central Florida. He still teaches there three days per week. He works in the world of optics and lasers, doing “research at the frontiers.” Two years ago, he was elected a fellow of the National Academy of Inventors. “This organization recognizes inventors whose inventions have been significant,” he said. “I guess my 1973

invention of how to use fiber optics and laser light with an endoscope through natural or man-made openings in the body to treat various pathologies is one of those,” he said. “It seems that it is the grandfather patent for much of laparoscopic surgery. I have 33 other patents, but I think this is the most significant.”

He says he tries to teach his students there were no “good old days.” “There were just ‘old days,’ ” he said. When asked for an example of what he means, Mike put it in rather stark terms. “We’re treating cancer by poisoning the body,” he said. “You think that’s good?” Last October, Mike received the prestigious R.W. Wood Prize from the Optical Society of America. Two previous winners went on to win Nobel prizes. “I guess I am in good company,” he said.

Listen to Bob Soos on the Local News

Magazine Monday – Friday 8am-9am and

6pm-7pm

Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down.

440. “Alone Again (Naturally)” (1972) Gilbert O’SullivanMemory: WTTB’s Bob Soos will roll his eyes over this song making the list, but I love the storytelling aspect of it.

439. “What’s Up?”(1992) 4 Non BlondesMemory: This song has a Vietnam War-era “feel” about it ... even though it came along a quarter-century later.

438. “Shannon”(1976) Henry GrossMemory: I have to admit, I was taken aback when I found out this song was about a dog!
