Welcome to Swinton Lions as we return to Betfred Championship action after the disappointment of the semi-final defeat in the AB Sundecks 1895 Cup at the hands of Widnes Vikings last Sunday. Being a Leigh supporter certainly makes you aware of the contrasting emotions you experience in sport, and that defeat will ultimately rank alongside some of the big downsides in semi-final ties, on a par with losing to Featherstone at Headingley in the Challenge Cup in ’74, at Blackpool in the John Player semi a couple of years later, to Saints at Central Park in 1987 and more recently to Widnes in the play-offs in 2001. To name a few off the top of my head.

Ah well, you dust yourself down and go again. There’s always next week and today gives John Duffy and his players the opportunity to quickly put that game to bed and continue our excellent league form. Mind you, no one is under any illusions of the task we face as the Lions are playing really well and ever since that amazing win in Toulouse have strung together some great results that have

seemingly banished any relegation fears. After only surviving in the Championship last year by virtue of a hastily organised relegation/promotion play-off against Workington Town it represents an excellent season for Stuart Littler and his players.

Stuart played out the final years of a distinguished playing career with his hometown club at LSV after so many years of great service to Salford and is now building a fine reputation as a coach at Swinton, just as Ian Watson did before him. It’s been great to see Allan Coleman, so highly respected as a top coach in the community game, move into the assistant’s role at the Lions. I saw Allan at our game last week and unfortunately, he was hobbling along on crutches after a training ground injury. I hope he’s back to full fitness soon.

I was a regular on the terraces at Station Road in the 1970s and 1980s whenever Leigh didn’t have a game and many Swinton fans like John Edwards, Ian Rigg, John Spellman and Ian Jackson became lifelong friends of mine, while Steve Wild, now Lions CEO, wrote the definitive club history of all time with his simply brilliant

The Lions of Swinton that holds a significant pride of place on my bulging bookcase. Together those Lions fans show an amazing loyalty to their club through good times and bad and those very same qualities also make us Leigh fans a special breed.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

There was a great photo (shown below) of the Lions fans celebrating the win in Toulouse with the players and another at the Summer Bash. Photos like that reinforce why we all love the game of Rugby League. Tony Barrow was special guest at the Widnes game, a great Leigh servant as player and assistant coach and who later enjoyed a long coaching and managerial role at Swinton. Tony was invited by John Duffy to tell the Leigh players at training about some of his experiences in the game which include two Wembley wins, with Saints in 1966 and Leigh in 1971 and his talk left a lasting impression.

Tony enjoyed Sunday’s game, despite the result, not least because there were so many great Rugby League people around. Norman Turley kindly hosted Premier Club

for me expertly and his son Neil came along to make a pre-match presentation to Gregg McNally on his 250th career game. A great effort by Gregg, well done!

The great Des Drummond presented Ryan Brierley with a canvas print to mark his 1,000 career points, while Ryan’s second try last week against Batley had seen him equal Des’s record of 141 tries and leave the pair joint fourth in the all-time Leigh try-scoring list. That’s a great effort by Ryan.

Andy Burnham, the Lord Mayor of Manchester and the Club Honorary Vice President and Rob Elstone, CEO of Super League were also special guest of the club on the day and both enjoyed the spectacle and occasion. Andy met up again with the late Mick Martyn’s daughter Sue who was also taking in the game with her husband. Andy and Mick and his family were great friends and lived close by in Croft.

The great Leigh favourite Timmy Street was also in attendance together with Neil McCulloch- we harked back to that 1987 semi in which Neil played and scored Leigh’s only try in a heart-breaking 14-8 defeat- and the one and only Tommy Martyn together with Saints assistant coach Richard Marshall and CEO Mike Rush.

And Notts CCC captain and England Lions representative Steven Mullaney took advantage of a rare weekend off cricket to come and support his home-town team. Steven was a talented Rugby League player and achieved England junior honours, playing alongside Jay Dufy for his country, before concentrating on cricket.

So it was an interesting afternoon of conversation and networking and Rob even took the opportunity to have a ‘selfie’ with Des!

Indisputably what the AB Sundecks 1895 Cup has already done is debunk the myth that no one cares about Wembley anymore. It’s given Championship clubs a chance to dream and, in the case of Sheffield and Widnes, to realise their dreams on the big stage. It’s also highlighted just what a fabulous competition exists outside Super League in the form of the Betfred Championship, as Halifax’s great effort in reaching the last four of the Challenge Cup amply demonstrated. And League One also produces great stories week by week, with Whitehaven continuing to lead the way by virtue of a great win at Hunslet last Saturday while West Wales finally

achieved that long-awaited win against Coventry a fortnight ago, so well done to them.

The publicity generated by the sponsorship by AB Sundecks has been fantastic and I’m sure the competition will grow in stature next year. The RFL get more than their fair share of criticism and rarely get any plaudits, and they deserve plenty of praise for introducing this competition.

I spoke to Harrison Hansen after the match with his family and he was beaming with pride at the chance to play at Wembley again. You could see how much victory meant to the Widnes lads, how much defeat meant tour lads. I also congratulated my old friend Mark Aston on reaching Wembley with Sheffield Eagles. Mark’s words after the Eagles beat Batley in the other semi-final perfectly summed up what it meant to him and his players.

Both semi-finals got great coverage on the live stream on the Our League app, which has been a fantastic addition especially to supporters of clubs outside Super League. Their regular features on the Championship and League One are excellent and their build-up to both semi-finals in the days leading up to the games was perfect. In addition, Alex Simmons’

interview with Halifax’s Scott Murrell ahead of the Challenge Cup semi-final was both insightful and amusing.

If you’ve not yet signed up to Our League then I recommend you do and please mention Leigh Centurions as you sign up for the free, digital platform as the club benefits directly from the number of subscribers who are our supporters. I’m told the on line stream for the Widnes game attracted the highest number of viewers this season.

Elsewhere in this programme there’s a tribute to Micky Higham who is set to be playing his 150th Leigh game this afternoon. My friend Louise Woodward-Styles designed the tribute and you may have seen the excellence of her work which regularly appears on Facebook and other social media channels, rightfully paying tribute to the players who dedicate so much of their lives for our enjoyment.

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

I’m indebted to John Goldthorpe, a Leigh supporter who recently spent time in France and Belgium touring

the battlefields and cemeteries of the first world war. He kindly sent along some photographs. During his trip John visited the grave of the Leigh player James Tobin who was one of the club’s players who died in the conflict. John was given permission to place a Leigh flag in front of the tombstone.

John wrote on Facebook: “Always a

Leyther and this little bit of France will always belong to a Leyther.”

James Tobin was a Leigh Irishman who served in the Boer War and in India. A sound, hard-working forward he started playing rugby seriously in his mid-20s and made seven first team appearances for Leigh after making his debut on Christmas Day 1908. A serjeant in the Royal Horse Artillery he was killed in action in France on 7 April 1917 aged 37. He was awarded the Military Medal shortly before his death. He is buried at Faubourg D’Amiens Cemetery, Arras. ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

So here we are, back at LSV, entertaining our local rivals in what’s sure to be a great game of Rugby League. Hopefully after last week’s rain the sun will be shining again as it usually is in Leigh. After last Sunday’s game I thought back to last autumn and reflected how far we’d come as a club. John Duffy and his staff have done an amazing job, the players have been great and the fans have risen to the challenge time and again. We have an exciting end to the season to look forward to and let’s enjoy it.

Enjoy the game, Mike

This afternoon we return to the Betfred Championship and a derby game against Swinton Lions. It’s good to be back at LSV and we aim to put behind us the disappointment of last week and finish the season strongly.

After the Widnes game I was gutted for everyone involved in our club but if you don’t perform in the big games, especially early in that second half, you pay the price.

We didn’t do enough with the ball to create anything. I’d expect us to play a bit more and when we were on top we didn’t take advantage. They scored two tries off Danny Craven, who we did a lot of work on in the week and that’s where we lost the game.

We have the league to focus on now, Swinton at home who are on fire at the moment and playing really well and next week Rochdale away, who are desperate for points.

Derby games are going to be fiery and that’s what it was. We weren’t smart enough with the ball when we had opportunities to play.

We had to put the Widnes game to bed at quickly as possible and when the players came in on Tuesday, we got the review done and then boxed it off and moved on.

We’ve come a long way in a short space of time as a team since those winter months when we started our pre-season with a handful of players running up hills in borrowed kit.

We quickly forged a team spirit, a bond and were united in our desire to perform for Leigh Centurions and thanks to the commitment and ability of everyone involved that spirit has taken us a long way.

We lost at Widnes on Good Friday in what to me as a coach was probably our most disappointing display of the season. But we used that as a spur to re-focus and since then our form’s been consistent and we’ve strung together a lot of victories.

We have to use the disappointment of the defeat last Sunday in exactly the same way.

The top five positions have changed week by week throughout the season but finally the pack of clubs behind runaway leaders Toronto shows signs of narrowing down. There’s a bit of a gap between the top five and sixth and seventh and we have to ensure we maintain our momentum.

We have five games left in the regular season, Swinton, Widnes and York at home, Rochdale and Toronto away. You look at the games left that are facing our rivals for a top five spot and they’ve all got difficult fixtures, often against each other. So the table’s not going to be decided until the final weekend.

As we’ve said all season, any team in the Championship can beat another and if you don’t turn up with your A game you’ll get burnt. That’s the message I’ve drummed home to the players week in, week out.

Our home form has been excellent and only Toronto have won here in the league, and that only narrowly.

With the games getting more and more important we’ve got to build on that. The support of our fans will be vital, as it has been all year.

One thing’s for sure, the Championship has been a fantastic competition this year and the success of Halifax in reaching the Challenge Cup semi-finals and performing so well in defeat against Saints coupled with the AB Sundecks 1895 Cup has seen teams outside Super League get due recognition for their skills and qualities.

I’m sure the 1895 Cup will become a regular feature of the season and its importance and prestige will increase year on year, while the Championship as a whole will continue to drive its standards higher and higher.

Enjoy the game, Duffs

A great day was had by all at the 2019 Leigh Centurions Golf day. The treelined Hindley Hall Golf Club was the location for a battle in which the top three teams were separated by only three points.

With greens faster than most would have played on before, the scoring was exceptional (with some exceptions, but we can get to those later). After a warm welcome, a three rasher bacon butty and the obligatory early morning coffee, the teams gathered by the putting

green to take part in a 30 metre putting competition to win a large bottle of Prosecco, which we are pleased to say did not get opened by the winner before the 12:30 shotgun!

All teams finished in less than 4 hours 30 mins, despite the halfway house drinks station taking its customary battering! This allowed the Hindley Hall team to put on a fantastic carvery which refuelled golfers nicely. Some needed more refuelling than others after taking practice swings, duffs, provisionals and finally connecting with the often talked about but rarely met centre of the clubface.

With fun being the central theme of the day, a number of spot prizes were set out early morning including four ‘nearest the pin’ on par 3’s. One nearest the pin in 3 on a par 5, one “hit your drive past Nick’s 5 iron” and of course a longest drive on the narrow 18th.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Audi Preston were again disappointed not to be able to record a car sale against the insurance company due to someone getting a hole in 1 at the 2nd.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

The winners were as follows: First prize - Team Hilltop Products (88pts) Second prize - Players team (Dan Halliwell, 24/7 Technology) (87pts) Third prize - Fastflow Energy Services 1 (85pts) Last place - Cloud4 Computers (71pts) The other competing teams were: Palatine Paints 1 (80pts), Palatine Paints 2 (82pts), Ascot Services (83pts),

Estate Agency Signs (82pts), William James Recruitment (80pts), EDP (72pts), Fastlow Energy Services 2 (83pts), Impact Insurance (82pts) and Preston Audi (81pts). Nearest The Pin winners - Steve Peers, Dean Lee, A Dixon, A Nicholson, N Sweeney. Longest drive at the 18th - Tony Cottrell.

LEIGH COMMUNITY TRUSTAs part of the MindCraft programme, we try to introduce our students to as many ways as possible to manage their stresses, worries and anxieties. As with anyone who has played sport, you’ll know the amazing feeling you get after you’ve finished. So with this is in mind, we asked professional boxer Stacey Copeland to come in to speak to our all-girl group at MindCraft and deliver a boxing session with them.

Stacey’s story is truly a fascinating one. From an early age, her two loves in life were boxing and football. But as both sports were illegal for females to do when she was growing up, she did what a lot of girls her age did, she shaved her hair off and joined the local boys football team. She openly talked to the students about her struggles with this and all the name-calling that went with it. What was very evident about Stacey was her amazing self-belief that she was going to be successful at what she loved. And she was.

She went on to play professionally in America, Brazil, Sweden and here in England where she appeared in an FA Cup final. One of her proudest moments was standing on the half way at Wembley singing the National Anthem.

Her other passion, boxing, is now legal for females to compete in and coming from a long lineage of boxers, she wanted to carry on the family tradition and become a pro boxer herself. Stacey talked about her self-doubt before a fight but then extreme confidence once she actually gets in the ring. She went on to be British champion, the same belt her father had won, and the first ever female Commonwealth Champion. Even this amazing achievement was tinged with her fight for female equality as she was not even awarded a belt because the boxing authorities didn’t feel it was worth buying one. She turned that disappointment into something positive and made sure that there is now a belt for the next person so they don’t have to go through those negative emotions when the occasion should only be a positive one.

The session was extremely insightful

and Stacey finished off the session by doing some basic punch combinations on the pads with the students.

Libby, 14, had this to say about Stacey coming in. “Stacey was ace! She really made me think about how I feel about myself and what I can achieve if I put my mind to it. I really enjoyed the boxing session at the end and it has made me want to sign up to my local boxing gym”

MIndcraft welcomes Stacey CopEland

THE CENTURION • THE OFFICIAL MATCHDAY PROGRAMME OF LEIGH CENTURIONS RLFC 55

A special welcome today to Adam Bristow who is back in the UK for an extended holiday with his wife and family. Adam will be reunited with his old team mates at this afternoon’s game against Swinton Lions. ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Adam is one of the most popular overseas players to ever play for Leigh Centurions and one of only three to have made over one hundred appearances for the club.

The other two are Mick Bolewski and Tau Liku.

Bolewski (#188) was a member of the first Kangaroos who later joined Leigh after the tour and made exactly one hundred appearances for the club between 1909 and 1912, scoring three tries and kicking 18 goals.

Tau Liku (#1075) followed in the footsteps of fellow Tongan Lee Hansen and played 121 games (25 tries) for Leigh between 1994 and 1999. He still lives in the town and is a regular at LSV.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Adam scored 53 tries in 141 games between 2000 and 2003, earning heritage number #1164 and was club captain in each of his last two seasons.

WELCOME BACK TO LEIGH
