Welcome to the 2019 Leicester CAMRA Beer Festival, its second year at The Haymarket Theatre. The 2018 Festival was the first major event to be held at the Haymarket after its 10 year closure and with everybody on a steep learning curve (no pun intended), gave us several moments of “unintended excitement”. Although some building work continues, this should now be completed in January 2020. Our thanks go to The Haymarket Consortium for their continued support and to all those who gave us invaluable feedback during last year’s festival. We’ve tried to make changes where possible and will look at tweaking things year on year. Once again we’ll collect feedback and we will have a debrief meeting soon after the festival (see website for details). You can also e-mail us at [email protected] year’s theme is “50 years since the first moon landings” so you will find a number of appropriately-named festival special beers, many from our local Leicestershire and Rutland breweries. The ordering team have scoured the land for something tasty and maybe a bit different from further afield. Our festival glass is available as a pint or tankard, lined to ensure a full measure; they are yours to take as a souvenir should you wish. The ever popular Cider and Perry bar (see page 10) will be dispensing product from a variety of cideries with this year’s emphasis on Kent. All our ciders and perries are derived from British pressed and fermented apple and pear juice.The beer world continues to evolve and for the second year we have KeyKeg on offer; all defined as Real Ale.

The International Beer bar (this year run by our friends at Brewklopedia) offers those requiring something a little different with a range of bottled and canned beers from Europe and North America. The Gin bar returns along with some other vendors we now have room for, helping the event become more inclusive and attractive to a wider audience. As always the event couldn’t happen without many hours of commitment from Camra volunteers and other supporters including Everards, our wonderful long-term main sponsor. CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale, is an independent, voluntary, consumer organisation which campaigns for real ale, real pubs and consumer rights.Membership is open to all individuals although corporate entities such as breweries and pubs are not members; we currently have approx 185,000 individual members nationally and our ‘Leicester Branch’ currently has over 1,900 members.CAMRA is governed by a voluntary unpaid national executive, elected by the membership. We have a branch structure which means that all members can join a local CAMRA branch and campaign and socialise locally. There

are around 200 branches covering the UK and many of the branches run local beer festivals, publish local newsletters and run social events to pubs and breweries.Although we are a volunteer-led organisation there is also a small professional staff of twenty-five responsible for central campaigning, research, membership services, publishing, marketing and administration. CAMRA is financed through membership subscriptions, sales of products such as books and sweatshirts, and from the proceeds of beer festivals. We are a not-for-profit company, limited by guarantee and our accounts are lodged annually with Companies House.

Peter Harrison 1942-2019Peter was diagnosed with cancer in 2018 and passed away on February 11th 2019.

Peter joined the Campaign for Real Ale (Camra) when beer festivals restarted in Leicester in 1999, due to the influence of drinking friend Mark Taylor. He was an active supporter of the branch, running

the food counter at subsequent Leicester Beer Festivals for a number of years and being responsible for others’ future involvement. After handing over his food responsibilities he would help on the membership stand and in 2017 on token sales. He attended in 2018 as a customer still taking a great interest in branch activities. Every couple of months, through the last decade and into this, he would travel around the county delivering the branch magazine, at one point delivering over half the 5000 copies, only stopping when his car gave up and wasn’t replaced.

In his later years Peter was part of group that enjoyed a social pint on a Sunday night in Leicester and he would call into The Cradock on the way home. Those within the group had come to know him during the mid 90s through pub going activity, attending local beer festivals and other beery adventures.

A further tribute will appear in the Leicester Drinker 121.

CAMRA is the most successful single issue consumer campaign group in Britain. If CAMRA had not been formed to save real ale then this classic, great-tasting British drink would have become extinct. Since its formation in 1971 CAMRA has achieved the following: • In the 1970s CAMRA successfully fought the efforts of the big brewers to replace traditional ales with tasteless

keg beers. • In the 1980s CAMRA lobbied against the lack of choice in Britain’s pubs. In 1989 the Government responded

with wide reaching reforms called the Beer Orders. The Beer Orders forced the big six brewers to sell or free from the tie over 11,000 as well as introducing the Guest Beer provision.

• In the 1990s CAMRA actively encouraged and supported real ale resurgence. During the decade CAMRA thwarted efforts by the EU Commission to abolish Britain’s Guest Beer provision.

• Since 2000 CAMRA has succeeded in campaigning for the: – Extension of mandatory rate relief to public houses – Reform of the outdated licensing laws in England and Wales leading to a more flexible licensing system – Introduction of reduced excise duty for small brewers which means that small brewers are able to compete

on a more level playing field with the large brewers– Abolition of the Beer Duty Escalator in 2013.

• CAMRA has run literally thousands of initiatives to promote and safeguard real ale and pubs including staging beer festivals, publishing books and guides, running Community Pubs Week and the Saving Your Local Pub which was launched by Prince Charles, producing a generic beer campaign, holding regular promotions for endangered beer styles and cider, producing national and regional inventories for pubs with interiors of historical significance and much more.

WHAT SHOULD I DRINK?First time at a beer festival?Once you have paid your entrance fee you will need to collect your glass. Don’t worry if you don’t want to keep the glass, we will take the glass back when you have finished and refund the cost as long as you haven’t damaged it (although they do make great souvenirs to take home!).

You will find the beers numbered and in alphabetical order by brewery name. It is worth starting on the lower ABV (Alcohol by Volume) beers. Why not start with a Mild Beer? You can then sit down and decide what takes your fancy by reading the tasting notes in the programme. Work your way up through the bitters and best bitters at a steady pace before going for something stronger. Don’t go for a strong 5.0 ABV straight away. Please remember that it is unusual for some of the beers to last through four days of the festival. If a particular beer is not available it is most likely someone has beaten you to it!

Make sure you have something to eat during the session, there is nothing worse than drinking on an empty stomach and getting that fresh air attack when you leave.

Fancy something different?Why not try one of our real ciders or perries? This is not the fizzy cider you get in most pubs but is produced by traditional independent farmhouse producers. They are 100% pure and natural but beware – they are normally very strong. We have the largest variety of ciders and perries probably ever put together in Leicestershire.

If it is busy at the bar and you have to wait a few minutes to get served please be patient and remember that we are all UNPAID VOLUNTEERS working hard on your behalf. We want to enjoy the festival just as much as you do.

Have a great time! And remember to ask for real ale the next time you are in a pub.

When taking your festival glass home make sure you take it off the premises in a bag, local byelaws state you must not carry a glass in the street with or without alcohol in it and you will also not be allowed on public transport with a glass in your hand. We will provide a carrier bag for you if required.

Cider BarOnce again we present a selection of cider and perry, two of Britain’s oldest and most traditionally produced drinks, from small and family producers old and new. This year we celebrate Kent’s burgeoning cideries supported with a smattering of East Midlands producers.

Festival Beer ListsDYSLEXIA Following comments received previously the colourways on our beer lists were chosen to aid easy reading.

COLOUR CODINGFollowing the principle that we eat and drink with our eyes, we have adopted CAMRA’s colour code system, which has found particular favour with new drinkers. All beers in our main list are now numbered 1 to 6 (lightest to darkest) in accordance with the chart on page 15.

FESTIVAL SPECIALSThis year we have eighteen beers brewed especially for the festival with no fewer than thirteen coming from local breweries.

VITAL STATISTICSStingo has its roots in the 15th century and by far the oldest of the 111 breweries at this event, whereas five breweries only started last year. Of our 236 cask beers (which range from 3.1 -12.0% ABV at an average 4.6%), we have 25 beers from 13 breweries established in 2017 and 7 beers from 5 breweries established in 2018. By colour we have 71 Pale Ales, 51 Golden Ales, 24 Light Amber, 31 Dark Amber, 9 Dark Brown and 50 Black Beers. Some of the beers to look out for include one that has only just won Champion Beer of Nottinghamshire 2019, lagers and pilsners for the “new to Real Ale” visitors, a lemon and lime brut sour, hibiscus flavoured IPA, raspberry porter, two of the latest releases from Tiny Rebel, and our amazing range of dark beers includes the one and only Sarah Hughes Ruby.In addition to Cask Ales we have 17 beers available on the Key Keg bar.

ALLERGENS & OTHER FOOD ADVICEMost beers use finings such as isinglass, but there is no requirement to show fish as an ingredient. The Food Standards Agency has indicated that European Directive 2007/68/EC provides permanent exemption for a number of derived ingredients and substances which includes fish gelatine or isinglass used as a fining agent in beer and wine as they are unlikely to cause allergic reactions. The fining agent is classed as a process aid not an ingredient as it’s almost all out of suspension. In 2015 we added Vegan and Gluten Free options to our Beer Lists. This year we offer the following:Vegan (V): 69 beers suitable for Vegans (all marked V in the beer lists; 57 Cask, 12 KeyKeg) Gluten Free (GF): 11 Gluten Free beers.Lactose (L): Eight beers contain lactose.Full details of allergens are kept at the membership desk.

Although the focal point of the Festival is Cask Ale we also cater for a range of alternate tastes. This year we celebrate the 50th anniversary of man’s first steps on the moon. Apollo 11 was the first manned mission on 20th July 1969, the grainy pictures captivating people around the world as the lunar module Eagle touched down on the surface. Some of the narrative from that first landing, such as “the Eagle has landed” and “One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind” has entered the vernacular lexicon. In reality Neil Armstrong’s first step wasn’t small at all, being a four feet drop to the surface.

Surprisingly, NASA had no special life insurance in place for its astronauts and because the intrepid three could not afford cover for their high-risk occupation they autographed a host of photographs, books and so on before they went with instructions for them to be sold off if it all went wrong. NASA missions were often “seat of the pants”, so much so that when they were retrieved from the ocean and taken to Hawaii they had to fill in immigration forms, famously completing the “Departure From” box with “the Moon”.

As ever, many brewers have come up with appropriate names for their festival specials and the beer ordering team have found some others amongst standard ranges, not just referencing real space events, but Star Trek, Star Wars and other science fiction.

For a few years now a small group have embraced the festival theme and turned up in fancy dress and we’re always intrigued to see which characters will appear for ‘FANCY DRESS FRIDAY’ R.M.

KEY TO BEER STYLESMild. Low in hop character these beers may be dark or light. Generally of a lower strength (less than 4% abv) but may be strong (e.g Sarah Hughes Dark Ruby Mild at 6% abv).Bitter. The most common beer style. Usually brown, tawny, copper or amber coloured with medium to strong bitterness, light to medium malt character may be present. Less than 4% abv.Best Bitter. More robust than ordinary bitters. Brown, tawny, copper or amber coloured with medium to strong bitterness and a more evident maltiness. 4% - 4.6% abv in strength.Golden Ales. A recent innovation. These are pale amber, gold, yellow or straw coloured beers with light to strong bitterness and a strong hop character which create a refreshing taste. Strength less than 5.3% abv.IPA. Was originally a bottled beer designed for long-distance export to Britain’s colonies. Generally understood as India Pale Ale, but sometimes designated Imperial Pale Ale, for some time it has been widely available in cask, keg and other forms than the traditional bottles. It has enjoyed resurgence alongside the popularity of Golden Ales and the terminology is largely interchangeable, though strength can exceed the upper level of Goldens. American Pale Ale (APA) is of similar characteristics but using New World ingredients.

Porter. Complex in flavour and typically black or dark brown. The darkness comes from the use of dark malts. Full mouthfeel and a pronounced finish through bitter hopping. 4 - 6.5% abv.Stout. Typically black in colour. Initial malt and caramel flavour with a distinctive dry roast bitterness in the finish. The dry roast character is achieved by the use of roasted barley. 4 - 8% abv.Speciality. Beer that doesn’t fall into the mainstream UK styles but may include novel ingredients such as non hop flowers, grain or cereal instead of malted barley, fruits, honey and spices. The category also includes cask-conditioned lagers.Strong. Strong bitters are full-bodied and possess assertive hop qualities. They are typically brown, tawny, copper, or amber but can be paler. They have medium to strong bitterness. Residual maltiness may be more pronounced than in other bitters and fruitiness may be medium to strong.Festival Special. One-off special brew – could be any of the styles.Barley Wines. Range in colour from copper to tawny and dark brown. They may have a high sweetness due to residual sugars although some barley wines are fermented right out to give a dry finish. They have an almost vinous appearance in the glass and may have a strength of between 6.5 - 12% abv. The estery and fruity characteristics are counter balanced by medium to assertive bitterness.
