Leica Geosystems has been a pioneer in integrating direct IMU georeferencing systems into airborne sensors and was first to market with a commercial, large-format digital sensor (camera) system. The GNSS/IMU system is an integral part of the Leica ADS80 airborne digital sensor as well as the Leica ALS60 airborne LIDAR system. Leica Geosystems has gained many years of practical experience in this field allowing it to closely study the applications and development of this technology. The resulting Leica Inertial Position & Attitude System (IPAS) was first embedded in the airborne systems Leica ADS40 and Leica ALS50 and have become standard for all product lines. Additional market requests have now led Leica Geosystems to make georeferencing units available as the Leica IPAS20 standalone system for a wide range of airborne sensors such as imaging, LIDAR, synthetic aperture radar (SAR), thermal and multispectral systems.
The Leica Geosystems Leica IPAS20 solution comprises of
reliable, highest-quality hardware components assembled
to strict Leica Geosystems quality specifications and
conforming to international airborne standards. Whether
you invest in a fully integrated system optimized for your
requirements or in individual components to improve the
system you already have, you can be assured that strict
manufacturing quality control and testing has been
exercised throughout the total production chain. Your
business depends on your sensor systems’ reliable opera-
tion and uptime that you have come to be expected from
Leica Geosystems products.
The benefits of the flexible Leica IPAS20 solution, its
modularity and its ease of integration are maximized in a
full system solution by Leica Geosystems. Yet, wishes of
3rd party sensor users can also be satisfied. See the Leica
IPAS20 equipment list for details of system configuration
selections. Leica Geosystems consultation on other
custom configurations is available on request.

Leica IPAS20System integration and optimal workflow
In a complete Leica Geosystems workflow airborne sensor
system is the key for effective airborne sensing projects.
Leica Geosystems has decades of experience in this field
and provides system solutions which are highly integrat-
ed, but also flexible and modular when used as stand-
alone components. The Leica IPAS20 with Leica IPAS TC
and Leica IPAS CO+ permits data acquisition and direct
georeferencing of airborne sensor data and camera orien-
tation. Leica FPES is used for optimized flight planning,
flight evaluation and project management. Leica FCMS
performs flight guidance and sensor control, as well as
in-flight data evaluation, recording and reporting.

The Leica IPAS20 system for all types of airborne sensorsThe Leica IPAS20 system consists of the Leica IPAS20
Control Unit with integrated GNSS receiver, GNSS anten-
na, IMU and software. The Leica IPAS20 Control Unit
allows interfaces to various IMU’s and up to four sensors.
It is designed for all types of airborne sensors such as
film frame cameras, digital frame cameras, line scanners,
LIDAR sensors, SAR or any other airborne sensors.
Leica GNSS technology (GPS and GLONASS)Leica IPAS20 uses state of the art GNSS technology. In
addition to GPS, Leica IPAS20 also tracks GLONASS
satellites. An upgrade to GPS L5 and Galileo will be
available as these systems become operational.
Choice of different IMU typesThe universal plug-and-play IMU interface of the Leica
IPAS system allows the connection of the best IMU choice
for a particular sensor system and application. The IMU is
selected depending on customer requirements for
performance, accuracy, exportability and cost and aided
by the experience of Leica Geosystems. All available IMU
types (different accuracy classes and manufacturers)
have passed Leica Geosystems’ extensive qualification
process before they are released.

Leica RCIF30 interface for RC30 aerial camera system – a Leica ASCOT successor The Leica RCIF30 interface is available for users of the
Leica RC30 aerial camera system. It is side mounted on
the Leica IPAS20 Control Unit and optimally connects the
aerial camera system to the Leica IPAS20 and Leica FCMS.
All components act as one compact system that provides
direct georeferencing, flight guidance and camera control
for Leica RC30 users. This setup is the successor to the
Leica ASCOT for Leica RC30.
Perfect interface to Leica FCMS, Flight & Sensor Control Management SystemThe Leica IPAS20 control unit provides a direct interface
to the Leica FCMS. The Leica Flight & Sensor Control
Management System makes survey flights an easier task
for pilot and operator. It provides in-flight guidance and
sensor control plus in-flight evaluation and completes the
components required for the airborne sensor system.
Precise Point Positioning – PPP Leica IPAS GNSS-IMU systems can benefit from Precise
Point Positioning (PPP) technology without requiring any
specific GNSS hardware. PPP eliminates the necessity to
have a DGPS ground station close to the project area.
System accuracies, when converted to ground coordinates
and considering the GNSS satellite constellations and final
ephemeris data, may result in photo center positional
accuracy of +/- 15 cm rms, or better. The tightly coupled
PPP processing option for GNSS-IMU systems is offered in
Leica IPAS TC.
GNSS-only configuration A Leica IPAS20 without IMU is a cost saving solution for
airborne imagery and photogrammetry projects. This
GNSS-only solution provides precise photo centers after
GNSS data post-processing. Through the acquisition of
precise positional coordinates of the photo centers and
their use in an AT photogrammetric block adjustment, the
number of ground control points (GCP’s) can be reduced
to a few check points. This results in a significant cost
saving in GCP establishment compared to those required
for traditional airborne projects. The investment in the
GNSS-only solution is lower because the IMU is not part of
the system. On the other hand, the full benefits of direct
georeferencing are not available in this cost saving
configuration.
Global service and supportLeica Geosystems provides customized professional
service 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Service
