• LIFESTYLE smart home

• SAFE AND SECURE smart home

• ASSISTED LIVING smart home

• GREEN smart home

Examples of smart(er) systems for homes

However:• implementation is not consistent• tends to be optional• demand for integration of the functions into a single system is current

limited• major demand is one of a “pick & mix” of functions

“pick & mix” approach - an installation chaos?

The “pick & mix” approach could lead to:

• a wide mix of wiring types and circuits

• multiple and confusing interfaces for the user

• unconsolidated technical support for the installer and end user

“pick & mix” – a structured approach

• indentify requirement

– features and locations

• select supplier(s) & products

• planned installation

Home systems – a structured approach

• System products now available that:– require minimal specialist wiring circuits– greatly reduce the set up requirements during installation– are relatively intuitive for the user– are almost fit and forget in nature

Categorising home systems

• stand alone functions no interaction with other devices

• “plug & play” functions self install with other functions on network

• integrated programmed network various degree of programming required during installation to integrate number and diversity of functions

Conclusion – what is available now

To meet the increasing call for systems in the home

• systems are available that are designed to be

– easy to install

– easy to use

– easy to maintain

– designed to integrate with the traditional electrical wiring accessories

Conclusion – importance of planning

• there is a need to identify what is really required in advance

• planning the installation and adequate infrastructure will:

– give flexibility

– be cost effective

– result in a successful installation

Conclusion – some hidden benefits

Often:

• it is possible to use the smart installation cable structure for a traditional installation

• smart lighting control systems remove the need to cable for two way and multi way requirements

• home systems contribute to energy saving – easier control of lighting, reduced pieces of audio / video equipment on stand by
