February 26, 2010 Dear Friends and Supporters of the Auntie Karen Foundation: Here we are again sharing in the excitement of another Legends Of. . . performance. Each year the search for the best is often tedious but always ends up in our favor! This seventh year of the Legends Of… concert series is no different, as we bring into our midst the legendary and dynamic musical duo: Ashford and Simpson. Their God-given talents and skills extend far beyond the beauty of their voices and we are excited about having them in the city of Columbia and in our presence tonight. Thank you for your presence also. It is because of your continued encouragement and interest that we able to continue to illuminate the arts. You, individually and collectively, have continued to support the vision and mission of the Auntie Karen Foundation, and nothing that you do for the foundation goes unnoticed. Your feedback is valuable and your input into the plethora of activities that the Auntie Karen Foundation does throughout the year serves to make us stronger. Our strength is further developed through the commitment of our sponsors and partners. Each year they, too, become more phenomenal in their giving and their inspiring dedication to join us in making the Legends of Concert Series an extraordinary event. We appreciate the opportunity to continue to learn from each sponsor and partner and work with them to make what seems at times to be an impossible venture transform into a possible blessing that goes beyond the expected. The Auntie Karen Foundation Board of Directors continues to overwhelmingly support the work of the Legends Of… planning committee, which is sustained by individuals who sacrifice their time in countless ways. The volunteers, preview party hosts and friends of Auntie Karen Foundation surpass their past successes as they continue to leap into new areas of growth and development on behalf of the foundation. Every committee member is valued and worthy of praise for their contribution to tonight’s performance. This is your night to enjoy and become absorbed in the radiance and beauty of music and fun. Background/SummaryThe Auntie Karen Foundation welcomes you to our seventh annual Legends Of...Concert Series. In 2004, our inaugural event featured Roberta Flack in concert with special guest, The Capital City Cho-rale. In 2005, we presented Jazz Legend, Dianne Reeves with special guest, The Auntie Karen All Stars, South Carolina’s Finest Musical Talent. Patrons are still rav-ing about Al Jarreau (2006) and Patti Aus-tin (2007). In 2008, we welcomed The Joe Sample Trio and Take 6. While in 2009, we showcased funk Legend, George Duke and jazz vocalist, Rachelle Ferrell. Tonight we are honored to welcome the dynamic singing, songwriting duo, Ashford & Simp-son.

The Auntie Karen Foundation created the Legends of...Concert Series to pay tribute to the contributions African American music has made to history. Each year during Black History Month, the series profi les a jazz, rhythm and blues, gospel or blues artist who has made a lasting contribution to the history of music. The series places a special emphasis on Jazz Legends. In addition, we have extended our series to include “Legends of...In the Schools”. “Legends of...In the Schools” is a series of art events designed to sa-lute African American Heritage. Events include: Folk Art, Quilting, Dance, Spoken Word, Written Word and Music. Through a partnership with The Columbia Mu-seum of Art and CSAM (The Center for Southern African American Music at The USC School of Music, the last Saturday in January 2010, we featured some of the best local and regional artists at no cost to the public.

Ashford & SimpsonAs songwriters and performers, Ashford & Simpson have long ranked among the most acclaimed and admired creative couples in contemporary music.

Their award-winning collaborations began, incredibly, over four decades ago, in 1964 to be exact. That year they recorded an original song, “I’ll Find You,” as “Valerie & Nick,” having met earlier that year in New York at the White Rock Baptist Church. Nickolas Ashford had just moved to New York from Detroit in pursuit of a theater career, having completed a course in modern dance at the University of Michigan. Homeless upon arrival, he happened upon Bronx native Valerie Simpson, who had studied piano since the age of fi ve and was playing and singing with the Harlem church’s legendary choir.

Nick joined the choir and the two began writing songs, selling their fi rst batch, which included “I’ll Find You,” for $75. They were soon signed to the legendary Scepter Records as staff songwriters, breaking through in 1966 when Ray Charles landed a major hit with their composition “Let’s Go Get Stoned.” This led to their signing with Motown Records, where they penned the classic Marvin Gaye/Tammi Terrell hits “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” “Your Precious Love, “Ain’t Nothing Like the Real Thing,” “You’re All I Need to Get By” and “Good Lovin’ Ain’t Easy to Come By.” They also wrote hits for other Motown greats, most notably Diana Ross, who launched her solo career with a hit remake of “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” that was also produced by Ashford & Simpson, as were such later A&S-written hits as “Reach Out and Touch (Somebody’s Hand)” and “The Boss.”

But the songwriting/producing duo had its own recording/performing aspirations as well. While Valerie had scored with a pair of well-received solo albums for Motown in the early 1970s, it was with Warner Bros. Records that the by now married Ashford & Simpson fully realized their artistic vision. From 1973 to 1981 they released nine albums, yielding such unforgettable hits as “Send It,” “Don’t Cost You Nothin’,” “It Seems to Hang On,” “Love Don’t Make it Right,” “Is It Still Good to Ya” and “Found a Cure.” The hitmaking continued after a move to Capitol Records in 1982, with “Street Corner,” “Highrise,” “I’ll Be There for You,” and of course, “Solid,” which topped the r&b chart in 1984 and crossed over to No. 12 on the pop singles chart.

All the while they continued writing and producing for other artists, including Ben E. King, Gladys Knight and the Pips, Chaka Khan (they wrote her hit “I’m Every Woman”) and Quincy Jones (they co-wrote and performed on his hit “Stuff Like That”). Their concert appearances, meanwhile, were exhilarating: Choreographed by Tony Award-winning George Faison, the shows incorporated stunning costumes and sets that made Ashford & Simpson a live attraction worthy of the best venues in the country. In fact, they were the only r&b act to perform at the historic Live Aid event in 1985, where they brought out Teddy Pendergrass to join in on “Reach Out and Touch (Somebody’s Hand)” in his fi rst performance following his tragic car accident, and later starred in concerts celebrating Nelson Mandela’s 70th birthday and President Clinton’s fi rst inauguration.

In 1996, “Reach Out and Touch (Somebody’s Hand)” was used as the theme for the Summer Olympics in Atlanta. Also that year Nick and Val formed their own label, Hopsack & Silk, and released “Been Found,” an acclaimed music/poetry album collaboration with their friend Maya Angelou.
