Ryan Dungey Sweeps in Home StateThe second half of the Lucas

Oil Motocross season kicked off Saturday in Millville with the Spring Creek National. Ryan Dungey, already the man to beat in the 450 class, turned in another dominant perfor-mance, this time at his home-state track.

In Moto 1, Dungey had to work his way up to the front from fifth place, while Mike Alessi led the race’s first five laps. Eventually, Dungey reeled in the #800, and once he made the pass for the lead, he pulled away and cruised to the vic-tory.

Moto 2 was easier for Dungey as he got a good start and took over the lead quickly. The Red Bull KTM rider would wind up finishing about 49 seconds ahead of the next rider, Alessi, by the end of the race.

The sweep puts Dungey’s streaks at 10 straight moto wins and five straight overall wins. He now holds an 80-point lead over Alessi in the 450 points standings.

ESPY AwardDungey won the Best Action

Sport Athlete accolade in ES-PN’s 23rd annual ESPy awards last wednesday. Dungey won

after coming in first in a public vote, Moto Magazine reported.

Gray Tigers Fall to Millersby Mike ZellmannThe Belle Plaine Gray Tigers

(over 35) baseball team lost to the Jordan Millers 10-7 last wednesday at Jordan. The game did not start well for

the Grays as veteran starting pitcher Terry Knop struggled with control, allowing a mix of hits and walks as the Mill-ers tallied five runs in the first inning. But Knop would settle down for the next five innings and blank the Jordan hitters. The Grays made a comeback

in the second inning with walks to Knop and hits by Jeff Fahey, Tim Doboszenski and Brian Morrison, with later two driv-ing in two RBI to bring the score to 5-2.The Tigers came out in the

fourth inning with their hitting hats on as they got five hits in a row from Knop, Fahey, Do-boszenski, Stender and Morri-son to start the inning and plate three runs. A single by Zell-mann drove home two more to bring the score to 7-5 in favor of the Gray Tigers. But the Grays could not hold

the lead as their normally steady defense did not come through as with two outs they had an er-ror that cost them three runs to put Jordan up to stay 8-7 with the final being 10-7.Belle Plaine’s hitting attack

was led by Fahey, Doboszen-ski and Morrison with two hits apiece. The next game for the Tigers

will be at Bloomington today

(wednesday) followed by a game at Le Center at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Despite forecasted thunder-storms, good weather prevailed for the 20 teams competing in this year’s volleyball tourna-ment at Holy Family Acad-emy and Chapel in rural Belle Plaine. This no doubt came as a great

relief for the many players, who travelled from as far away as Kansas and Missouri to partici-pate in the 11th annual event, which took place on Saturday, July 11.The tournament, which was

double-elimination preceded by two rounds of pool play, lasted nearly 12 hours and in-cluded many very close games. In the end, K.C. Masterpiece, a team from Kansas City, took home the men’s trophy. They received their hard-won award just in time to leave by 9 p.m. for the long drive back home.

The women’s trophy was claimed by the Mighty Maders, a team made up of family mem-bers from central Minnesota. The Maders worked extraor-dinarily hard for their victory this year, overcoming many obstacles along the way. One of them lost her family’s home in a fire earlier this year. Another broke her foot a few months back, and one more played while expecting a child due in November. As Rose Mader, the team’s captain, explained, “Out of all the years we have been coming to this tournament we never thought this would be the year we would win. Some of my girls have had a rough year so far, and we were all hoping to just play well enough to have a fun day.”while the Maders came to en-

joy the day and ended up leav-

ing with a trophy, other players arrived with apparently greater ambitions.“we heard there was a tourna-

ment, so we decided we’d come win it,” explained Lance Ricco-mini from St. Mary’s, Kansas. He then added that the real rea-son his team had come was to visit friends they’d made over previous years and to have fun. It was a sentiment expressed by many others as well.“It’s always a good time,” said

Nick Dvorak of Belle Plaine.Bernedette Ruegemer of the

Cereal Killers emphasized how much her team looks forward to enjoying the event every year.“It’s like a Catholic family re-

union.”Anyone interested in partici-

pating in next year’s tourna-ment can contact Holy Family at 952-873-2582.
