DRIVERLESS CAR OR AUTONOMOUS CAR
An autonomous car, also known as a driverless car, driver-free car, self-
driving car or robot car, is an autonomous vehicle capable of fulfilling
the human transportation capabilities of a traditional car. As an
autonomous vehicle, it is capable of sensing its environment and
navigating without human input. Robotic cars exist mainly as prototypes
and demonstration systems. Currently, the only self-driving vehicles
that are commercially available are open-air shuttles for pedestrian
zones that operate at 12.5 miles per hour (20.1 km/h).

WORKING OF DRIVERLESS CAR
Autonomous vehicles sense their surroundings with such techniques as
radar, lidar, GPS, and computer vision. Advanced control systems
interpret sensory information to identify appropriate navigation paths,
as well as obstacles and relevant signage. Some autonomous vehicles
update their maps based on sensory input, allowing the vehicles to
keep track of their position even when conditions change or when they
enter uncharted environments. Google was granted patent US8078349
for this on December 13th 2011.

reliability and faster reaction time compared to human drivers.
• Increased roadway capacity and reduced traffic congestion (due to
reduced need for safety gaps), and the ability to better manage

• Relief of vehicle occupants from driving and navigation chores.
• Higher speed limit for autonomous cars.
• Removal of constraints on occupants' state – in an autonomous car,

• If a driverless car drives a drunk person home, could the person be
charged with drunk driving? This is by no means a trivial issue
because all current autonomous cars allow switching between
driverless and normal modes. In an accident doubts may be raised
about who had control of the car. A similar problem arises for
operating mobile phones while driving. The Nevada law on
driverless cars includes an explicit provision for this case.

In August 2011, a human-controlled Google driverless car was
involved in a crash near Google headquarters in Mountain View, CA.
Google has stated that the car was being driven manually at the time of
the accident. A previous incident involved a Google driverless car
being rear-ended while stopped at a traffic light. Google says that
neither of these incidents were the fault of Google's car but the fault of
other humans operating the car.

Although legal issues connected to driverless cars have raised many
questions, emotion may prove a greater obstacle to their acceptance and
as driverless car is still in research, hope we can see driverless car running
in our roads soon which would overcome all these obstacles and legal
issues in the future, let’s wait and see.
