The tunnel forms part of Brisbane City Council’s TransApex transport plan which is designed to reduce traffic congestion and increase connectivity on Brisbane’s road network. Project Scope Transcity, a joint venture between BMD Constructions, Ghella and ACCIONA, was awarded the contract to design and construct the project, and operate and maintain Legacy Way for a period of ten years. The scope includes two parallel twin-lane tunnels linked by cross passages every 120 metres. Project construction has involved: World record breaking performance for tunnel excavation by two 12.4 metre diameter double shield Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs); 38,700 pre-cast concrete segments to line the tunnel walls and over 1,200 concrete piles; Underground conveyor tunnel to transport one million cubic metres of spoil to the Mt Coot-tha Quarry; Surface work completed offline reducing construction impacts on motorists; Over 185,000m² of asphalt laid across the whole project; and Four hectare expansion of the Brisbane Botanic Gardens, Mt Coot tha. The project is on schedule for 2015 completion and the successful delivery can be attributed to BMD’s ability to deliver innovative design and construction solutions for both surface and underground activities. The project team tunnelled under 454 residential and commercial properties, successfully mitigating issues with a comprehensive community engagement program. BMD Constructions has applied innovative construction methodologies that expedited the programme and significantly reduced potential impacts on the surrounding community.

OverviewLegacy Way is a 4.6 kilometre toll road tunnel connecting the Western Freeway at Toowong with the Inner City Bypass at Kelvin Grove. The tunnel forms part of Brisbane City Council’s TransApex transport plan which is designed to reduce traffic congestion and increase connectivity on Brisbane’s road network.

Project ScopeTranscity, a joint venture between BMD Constructions, Ghella and ACCIONA, was awarded the contract to design and construct the project, and operate and maintain Legacy Way for a period of ten years. The scope includes two parallel twin-lane tunnels linked by cross passages every 120 metres. Project construction has involved:

■ World record breaking performance for tunnel excavation by two 12.4 metre diameter double shield Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs);

■ 38,700 pre-cast concrete segments to line the tunnel walls and over 1,200 concrete piles;

■ Underground conveyor tunnel to transport one million cubic metres of spoil to the Mt Coot-tha Quarry;

■ Surface work completed offline reducing construction impacts on motorists;

■ Over 185,000m² of asphalt laid across the whole project; and

■ Four hectare expansion of the Brisbane Botanic Gardens, Mt Coot tha.

OutcomesBMD’s local supply chain connections and industry knowledge are providing benefits to this significant infrastructure project.

In 2013, Transcity was internationally acknowledged as the winner of the Major Tunnelling Project of the Year award in the $500 million category.
