On behalf of The University of Southern California Black Alumni Association (USC BAA), I would like to thank

each committee member, volunteer, donor, mentor, corporate supporter and friend for their generous

contributions and commitments. Without you, the BAA would not have the impact it does today!

Because of you, we have grown exponentially as an integral academic and funding resource for our

students, alumni and community.

Since its founding in 1976, the USC BAA has been the primary entry point to engage and garner financial

support for USC Black students. We have provided over $6 million in scholarship awards, and to date the

USC BAA has raised over $4 million in additional cash and pledges to steward future scholarship awards

to deserving students. With tuition and living expenses at $75,000, the BAA award greatly reduces loan

burdens and/or the need for a student to take on an extra job. BAA Scholarship award benefits are not

merely financial—increased campus immersion, increased study time and reduced stress are proven to

significantly increase student retention and graduation rates overall. Your gifts change lives!

Importantly, the USC BAA is highly regarded as a “best practice” resource for wrap around support for

USC Black students, creating a supportive foundation through innovative partnerships with USC Schools

and sponsors. As a result, BAA Scholars continue to maintain a 100% graduation rate, evidenced since

2008. Our Scholars are strongly undergirded by the USC BAA’s Mentoring program, annual BAA Summit

conference, and collaborative relationships with the 20 USC Schools.

Additionally, the USC BAA Young Professionals (BAAYP) group continues to grow and thrive. Essentially,

this virtual LinkedIn group provides a highly effective connection point for young Black alumni leadership

development, community building and involvement.

In May, the USC BAA traveled to Paris! “Paris Noir" was once again a remarkable trip for alums to spend

time together, connect and to experience Black History on a global level. Stay tuned for our 2019 trip!

Please review the following information regarding

highlights and impact of the 2017-18 year. I am sure you

will be inspired to support and partner with the Black

Trojan alumni community and students.

The USC BAA can be emailed directly at:

[email protected]. I invite you to become involved on

a committee, attend our events, and/or support our

scholarships. I look forward to hearing from you!

Fight On!

Founded in 1976 by Rev. Dr. Thomas Kilgore, Jr., The USC Black Alumni Association is a leadership network

established to strengthen the legacy of educational attainment and excellence of USC Black students. The USC

BAA provides scholarship assistance; career mentoring and cultural advocacy through alumni networking,

volunteer involvement, philanthropy, and social enterprise.

Endowment Growth Highlights--$2.8 MM+ Market Value Growth since 2007

A major key to our success is our capacity to align our partnerships to gain needed success outcomes

for our alumni, students, sponsors and donors—utilizing our deep understanding regarding the

experiences and impacts of racial equity and its value to diversity.

In addition to a principal market value nearing $3MM, BAA endowment pledges remaining

to convert are an additional $1MM. Thus, within the next two years, an endowment

balance of $5MM is in sight. With additional pledges, we should easily exceed this goal,

providing student scholarships into perpetuity. Remember—all pledges are tax deductible!

Thank you in advance!

BAA Scholar Program Growth/Tuition Assistance Awarded--$2.96MM since 2008

BAA Scholarships: An average of 130 students per year are selected for tuition assistance

awards based upon merit and financial need. Both undergraduate and graduate students are

considered from all USC Schools and majors. Often, a student can retain a BAA scholarship

throughout their matriculation given satisfactory completion of mandatory volunteer service hours,

and involvement.

BAA Mentoring: Evidence demonstrates the significant impact of cultural and professional

mentoring in an institution like USC. All BAA Scholars are eligible for mentor-matching with an alumni

mentor in their discipline or interest—and in fact the “Legacy Through Leadership Mentoring Program”

(LTLMP) is open to any USC student that applies by the annual deadline. Mentors are selected from

vetted BAA alumni and advocates. Program highlights include career workshops, company visits,

topical group conversations and individually attuned professional development by seasoned,

successful staff, faculty and alumni professionals.

USC BAA events are superb experiences to network, share, support and further the cause and

conversations about excellence in higher education. Highlights from 2017-18 include: 18th Welcome

Pinning & Affirmation Ceremony; Trojan Legends Homecoming Weekend; Holiday Mixer; Aligning for

Black Excellence in Higher Education Summit; “Envisioning Hecuba” Scholarship Benefit at Greystone
