The 8 percent increase in giving to MUSC was more than double the 3.8 percent growth rate reported by non-profits nationwide, as reported in a study published by the Giving USA Foundation in June. During the year, the Medical University saw an increase both in the number of donors (11,110 vs. 9,938 in 2010) and the number of gifts (19,950 vs. 17,946). Most of the year’s contributions ($45.6 million) came from foundations and non-profit organizations. Meanwhile, giving by individuals grew 21 percent, from $24.7 million to $29.8 million. Corporate giving totaled $7.5 million. Notably, the sharpest increase in giving took place among individuals who did not graduate from the institution. That amount grew 42 percent, to $26.5 million. Also during the year, the MUSC Foundation’s investment portfolio achieved a 16.4 percent return, bringing the foundation’s total assets to more than $400 million. These philanthropically provided funds are used to pay for scholarships, endowed chairs, facility enhancements and a broad range of research, academic and patient-care programs. University President Dr. Ray Greenberg said the growth in philanthropic support has helped the university maintain consistently high standards of excellence, despite several consecutive years of cuts in state funding. “These gifts are so important because they help us sustain momentum not only in our academic pursuits, but also in the life-saving medical research and patient-care programs that benefit so many people in South Carolina and beyond,” said Greenberg. “We are ex- tremely grateful to the community for this support. It makes such a meaningful difference.” MUSC ends fiscal year with record $82.8 million in donations Philanthropic support grows 8 percent despite economic slump “THESE GIFTS ARE SO IMPORTANT BECAUSE THEY HELP US SUSTAIN MOMENTUM NOT ONLY IN OUR ACADEMIC PURSUITS, BUT ALSO IN THE LIFE-SAVING MEDICAL RESEARCH AND PATIENT-CARE PROGRAMS THAT BENEFIT SO MANY PEOPLE IN SOUTH CAROLINA AND BEYOND. More than 300 Nucor employees, customers and vendors took part in the tournament, which was held at Seabrook and Kiawah islands. Nucor organized its first tournament in 2000, after learning of the Medical University’s plans to build a new pediatric research center. “Nucor made it clear back then that they were more interested in a long-term partnership than a one-time gift,” said Barbara Rivers, development director for the Children’s Hospital. “That has certainly been the case; their partnership has allowed us to do some pretty incredible things for the children of South Carolina.” The funds raised by the Nucor Tournament enabled the Medical University to complete the Darby Children’s Research Institute, which today stands as the most comprehensive and productive pediatric research center in the Carolinas. It also has funded pediatric cardiology research and allowed MUSC to expand its pediatric oncology and pediatric nephrology programs. “On behalf of the entire MUSC community, I extend my heartfelt thanks to the employees, participants and sponsors of the Nucor Golf Tournament ben- efitting MUSC Children’s Hospital Fund,” said MUSC President Ray Greenberg. To honor her life, Dr. Platt established the Barbara G. Platt ’80 Memorial Scholarship. Utilizing the current IRA provisions, he was able to create the scholar- ship and begin making awards immediately. Dr. Armand Glassman joined the Hollings Cancer Center Citizens Advisory Council after retiring so he could remain involved in medicine and help support cancer research. In looking for a way to support this work philanthropically, Dr. Glassman learned that charitable IRA rollover gifts would provide him with a great way to make current gifts while saving his family the tax burden that would come with inheriting his IRA. As a member of the Storm Eye Institute’s Board of Directors, Bill Wert recently decided to establish an Endowed Chair in Neuro-Ophthalmology. MUSC Children’s hospital will use

a $1 million charitable invest-

ment from the boeing Company

to establish a community-based

center aimed at promoting better health among

the state’s young people.

the boeing Center for Promotion of healthy

lifestyles in Children and families will focus

on helping children make the linkage between

healthy diets, physical activity and good health.

the center will help children adopt healthy

lifestyle behaviors through a multi-pronged ap-

proach involving nutrition counseling, fitness

training, exercise classes, medical assessments,

individualized treatments and participation in

group programs. because young people acquire

so many of their lifestyle habits in home and at

school, the center also will serve teachers and

families in those settings to foster an environment

more supportive of healthy living.

Although the center will be housed and man-

aged from MUSC Children’s hospital in Charles-

ton, its activities will take place at schools and

other locations throughout the community. the

idea, says MUSC President dr. ray Greenberg, is

to prevent unhealthy lifestyles from developing in

the first place.

“Children are our future and by making this

investment, boeing is helping to shape a healthier

South Carolina. We need to instill healthy lifestyle

practices at the youngest possible ages in order

to prevent the development of diabetes, obesity,

high blood pressure and other illnesses down the

road.”

the center is based upon two successful obe-

sity prevention and treatment programs at MUSC

Children’s hospital: the lean team and heart

health. boeing’s investment will enable the hospi-

tal to integrate and expand both programs under

the auspices of an entire center, enabling them

to serve more young people and their families

throughout the tricounty area.

by the end of the center’s initial two-year

ramp-up period, it will serve more than 8,000

children and family members directly, plus an es-

timated 47,000 children and 8,000 personnel who

will benefit from menu adjustments and other

environmental changes made in 79 local schools.

dr. david habib, interim chairman of the MUSC

department of Pediatrics, believes the center will

have an enduring impact that eventually will be

felt throughout the entire state.

“the beauty of this education-based approach

is that it can be passed from neighbor to neigh-

bor, community to community and generation to

generation,” said habib. “In that sense, I believe

that this center’s long-term, positive impact on

public health in South Carolina’s will be scalable

and sustainable.”

Albaugh, Tim Keating and Jack Jones from Boeing.

Earning a college degree while

holding down a full-time job:

very respectable.

Keeping up with the rigors of a de-

manding graduate program while man-

aging increased job responsibilities:

even more impressive.

Completing a doctoral program and

becoming a divisional president for a

large corporation before the age of 40:

exceptional.

Such is the remarkable career trajectory of

MUSC alumnus brian Poplin, MhA, Ph.d., who

recently established a new fund at the MUSC Col-

lege of health Professions to help working profes-

sionals pursue leadership careers in health admin-

istration – just like he did.

Poplin’s entire career has been with Charlotte-

based Aramark, one of “the World’s Most re-

spected Companies,” according to a recent issue of

fortune magazine.

What makes Poplin’s rapid academic and pro-

fessional ascension particularly admirable is the

motivation behind it.

“like a light bulb going off, I realized that I

needed to make sure that our organization was

prepared for all the changes taking place in the

health care industry,” said Poplin.

no mention of personal gain, beach houses,

boats or any of the trappings that seem to

drive so many to succeed. Poplin’s initiative,

instead, comes from a sincere desire to serve a

greater good – in this case, to help his employer

make sense of an industry that seemed to have

changed overnight.

“the health care industry is changing so fast.

the work force is changing, the demographics

of the work force are changing, and the way care

is delivered both from a technology standpoint

and from a leadership perspective are dramati-

cally different than 20 years ago,” said Poplin.

Poplin’s gift to the College of health Pro-

fessions will be directed to both the Master of

health Administration (MhA) and doctorate of

health Administration (dhA) programs, with

an emphasis on enhancing the executive format,

which provides additional flexibility for students

who are employed full time.

“the funds will be used to elevate the quality

and breadth of our health administration pro-

grams for the purpose of preparing competent,

enlightened health care administrators,” said

Jim Zoeller, director of the College’s doctoral in

health Administration program.

“brian is very dedicated to the continuing

education of practitioners. And he has demon-

strated that himself by going back to school to

earn three degrees while climbing the ranks of

a major corporation,” said Zoeller. “he is the

epitome of a life-long learner.”

the fact that a generous gift is coming from

one of the College’s own is especially meaning-

ful for Zoeller. “It’s very gratifying to have a

former student express this kind of support for

the program. Makes you feel like you’ve done

something right.”

When asked what sets MUSC’s hospital ad-

ministration programs apart, both Zoeller and

Poplin point to the close relationship MUSC

faculty and students enjoy with actual practitio-

ners at the MUSC Medical Center.

“We work very closely with MUSC practi-

tioners on a daily basis. they end up informing

us just about as much as we inform them,” said

Zoeller. “It’s great relationship that keeps us all

on our toes.”

for Poplin, the gift is an opportunity to give

back to his alma mater and help make a great

program even better.

“I was at a point in my life where I needed

to think about what the impact would be if

something happened to me early in life or even

later; so my wife, tony, and I talked about all of

the things that are really important to us,” said

Poplin. “I definitely wanted to help working

professionals advance in health care leadership.

So as part of our estate planning, we put a plan

together for this fund.”

looking ahead, Poplin envisions MUSC’s

health administration program growing into

something beyond “respectable” or even “im-

pressive.”

“one day we’d like to see MUSC ranked num-

ber one in the nation for health administration

programs designed to meet the needs of tomor-

row’s health care leaders.”

With Poplin serving on the board of the

College of health Professions and dedicated

to the cause, that day could come sooner

rather than later.

Alumnus funds health administration programs for working professionals

kiawah couple funds pediatric oncology chair

D an and vicky Sullivan

of kiawah Island have

supported many worthy

causes over the years; more

often than not, the beneficiaries

of their good will, time and financial resources

have been children.

“We have been so blessed with two wonderful

and very healthy young men,” said vicky. “So our

hearts really go out to children and families who

are facing serious health issues like cancer.”

After moving to kiawah two years ago from

Pittsburgh, where dan had served as president

and CEo of fedEx Ground, it wouldn’t be long

before the Sullivans became involved in local phil-

anthropic activities. their interest in MUSC was

piqued when university President ray Greenberg

gave a presentation to residents of kiawah.

“dr. Greenberg shared with us some of the

amazing things they were doing at MUSC and I

became interested in finding out more and perhaps

getting involved in some way. they later followed

up and asked if I’d be interested in serving on their

foundation board and I accepted,” said dan.

As the Sullivans became more familiar with

MUSC, they began to consider making a major

financial contribution themselves. As in the past,

they knew deep down that they wanted to help

sick children and their families. “We wanted to

help children in some way – we’ve always felt

strongly about that – but it was also important to

us that our donation be directed to an area where

it would have the most impact and really make a

difference,” said dan.

After numerous conversations and learning

more about the university’s needs, the Sullivans

took a tour of the MUSC Children’s hospital.

they were profoundly moved by the experience.

“they reviewed several cases with us and

we saw firsthand what these children and their

families are up against. We really felt for them and

knew pretty much right away where we wanted to

make our donation,” said vicky.

“We had no doubt that the division of pediatric

hematology-oncology was where we wanted to

help, and also where we were convinced it would

make the most difference both in the short term

and in the future,” said dan. “they’re already do-

ing an amazing job with those kids, but it was also

very apparent that more resources were needed

immediately. that message came through loud

and clear.”

the Sullivans cited the expertise, professional-

ism and compassion of Michelle hudspeth, M.d.

as playing a big part in their decision. dr. hud-

speth was recruited to MUSC from Johns hopkins

back in 2007 to lead and expand the stem cell

transplant program. today she serves as director

of the division of hematology-oncology, which

provides comprehensive care for children of all

ages with cancer and blood disorders.

“We were literally taken aback by the truly

inspiring work she’s doing.” said dan. “She is the

mother of two small children and a kind-hearted

doctor who cares deeply for her patients. She also

has excellent leadership qualities and a very keen

business sense, which I, of course, appreciate.”

the Sullivans’ gift will establish an endowed

chair dedicated to the exploration of pediatric

cancer. “An endowed chair immediately elevates

the program and will hopefully allow us to attract

one of the top physicians and researchers in the

field,” said hudspeth.

And because the Sullivans’ gift is being made

in installments of $50,000, the initial funds are

immediately available, which means the search for

the prestigious daniel J. and victoria d. Sullivan

Endowed Chair in Pediatric hematology/oncol-

ogy can start without delay.

“We worked closely with Jim fisher in the

MUSC office of development to structure this

gift so that funds would be available to the pro-

gram immediately, because they need it right

now,” said dan, obviously no stranger to on-time

delivery.

friends and colleagues of the university’s first African-

American dental student have launched a campaign to

endow a scholarship named in his honor.

the dr. George C. Mcteer, Sr. Scholarship fund was

created to provide financial assistance to minority students

seeking a career in dental medicine. the friends of MUSC

Minority dental Scholarship Endowment Committee kicked off

a campaign to raise $1 million for the fund on April 28, during

the S.C. dental Association’s annual meeting in Myrtle beach.

the committee’s primary goal was to endow the Mcteer

fund at a level where it can provide at least one student with a

full scholarship on an ongoing basis, said Chairman dr. Isaiah

davis, dental Class of ’82.

on another level, davis said the committee’s goal was to

refocus attention on the need for minority scholarship support.

Minority-specific scholarships play an important role in meet-

ing the dental-health needs of South Carolina’s underserved

populations, he said.

“About 30 percent of the state’s population is African Ameri-

can, but there are very few minorities in the profession – fewer

than 100 in South Carolina, out of 1,800 private-practice den-

tists,” said davis.

“diversity is important because it ensures that we’re sensi-

tive to the special needs of minority patients. Minority dentists

are also effective at reaching out to these patients and educating

them about the importance of receiving dental care on a regular

basis.”

davis noted that the James b. Edwards College of dental

Medicine has been working for many years to recruit more mi-

nority students, but has been at a competitive disadvantage due

to a shortage of scholarship funds earmarked for that purpose.

Consequently, many applicants have left the state for schools

that can provide them with scholarship support – often for

good.

by endowing the Mcteer Scholarship, the committee hopes

to begin reversing this trend while paying tribute to a pioneer

in dental health in South Carolina.

though Sally Pittman was first diagnosed with Parkinson’s dis-

ease in 2002 at the age of 50, she and her care team believe she

most likely had the disease for a good five to 10 years before that.

“I had very unusual symptoms,” said Pittman. “I had a lot of

pain, and my right arm swelled up and turned blue.”

Eventually, Sally would develop a litany of debilitating symptoms,

including severe tremors and difficulty walking, hallmarks of Parkinson’s

disease. “It took them all of two minutes to diagnose me at MUSC’s move-

ment disorders clinic,” said Pittman. “So the question quickly moved from

What? to What’s next?”

Currently, there is no cure for Parkinson’s disease. Instead, therapy is di-

rected at treating the symptoms that are most problematic to the individual

patient. Accordingly, there is no “standard of care” for Parkinson’s disease

that can be applied to every patient.

treatment options for Parkinson’s disease include medication and surgi-

cal therapy.

Sally could not imagine taking another medication; she was already tak-

ing five to six pills every two hours just to make it through the day. More-

over, the medications were not working to control her symptoms as well as

they once had.

Sally and her care team decided on deep brain stimulation (dbS), which

uses surgically implanted, battery operated medical devices called neuro-

stimulators to deliver electrical stimulation to targeted areas of the brain

that control movement. the electrodes stimulate the production of dopa-

mine, a chemical that relays messages between certain parts of the brain,

resulting in smooth, coordinated muscle movements.

In 2004, Sally had neurostimulators implanted in both sides of her brain.

“My symptoms disappeared immediately, just as soon as I was turned on,”

she said. “the surgery was an absolute miracle.”

Pittman says the difference in her quality of life has been “night and

day” since the surgery. She was able to return to work as an accountant

and resume most of her daily activities. According to Pittman, the only

glitch occurs when she passes through the doorway of a store or building

equipped with scanners. “the metal detectors sometimes cause my little

gizmo (neurostimulator) to cut off,” said Pittman. “but it’s no problem

because I just cut it right back on.”

Grateful for the freedom the dbS surgery has provided, Pittman says

she wants to give back. “I suppose I want to pay it forward,” said Pittman. “I

can do it right now, so I’m doing it. I want to do everything I can to help.”

Pittman’s gift will be directed to MUSC’s Movement disorders Program,

which is led by vanessa hinson, M.d.

“to receive a gift like this from one of our patients is really special,” said

hinson. “the funds will be directed to movement disorders research, which

we hope will result in more success stories like Sally’s down the road.”

Colbert show benefits endowed chair

Stephen Colbert, host of Comedy Central’s “The

Colbert Report,” visited Charleston on July 1 to raise

money for an endowed chair named in his father’s

memory at the Medical University.

During “An Evening with Stephen Colbert,” the

Charleston native sat down with MSNBC’s Jonathan

Alter for a wide-ranging interview about his childhood,

family, politics, religion, dramatic technique and the

character he portrays on “The Colbert Report.”

About 2,000 guests attended the show at Gaillard

Municipal Auditorium, which grossed approximately

$100,000 to benefit the Dr. James W. Colbert Endowed

Chair.

Dr. James Colbert served as the university’s first

vice president for academic affairs from 1969 until

his death in a plane crash in 1974. The Dr. James W.

Colbert Endowed Chair will support in perpetuity the

work of the vice president of academic affairs and pro-

vost, a post today held by Dr. Mark Sothmann.

The endowed chair will provide Dr. Sothmann and

his successors with funds to pursue special initiatives

that otherwise might not be economically feasible,

especially those that promote greater interaction and

collaboration among students and faculty from all six

of the university’s colleges.

A record 3,100 people ran, walked, pushed strollers and walked their dogs in festive

holiday attire as part of this year’s Reindeer Run in Charleston. With support from title

sponsors Piggly Wiggly and Half-Moon Outfitters, as well as support from more than 25

local and national businesses, this year’s event raised $71,000 for the MUSC Children’s

daughter of renowned nyU cardiologist funds lung cancer research

ostraco’s father, Peter A. lefkow,

M.d., courageously battled his

cancer for more than two years,

enduring countless biopsies as well

as both chemotherapy and radiation. family

members said lefkow fared amazingly well during

the first year of treatment, never missing a single

day of work as director of cardiology programs at

the nyU langone Medical Center.

“he was a great father but also very dedicated

to his patients and his students,” said ostraco. “he

worked as long as he possibly could, right up until

the last six months or so when it really got bad.”

ostraco’s decision to direct funds to MUSC was

partly based on a recommendation from her

mother, who was an oncology nurse in new york

for many years. “I asked my mother if she had any

suggestions about where to make a donation to

cancer research and she told me about hollings

Cancer Center, “ said ostraco. “She said they were

doing great things there and I trust her opinion

implicitly.”

After meeting with George r. Simon, M.d.

and his thoracic cancer team, the lefkows were

convinced they’d made the right choice. dr.

Simon, who heads the division of thoracic oncol-

ogy, is a renowned lung cancer expert, who served

previously as director of thoracic oncology at fox

Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia before being

recruited to MUSC in 2010. he currently holds

the burtschy family distinguished Endowed

Chair in lung Cancer research and led the first

trial in the country that prescribed individualized

treatments to patients with advanced stage lung

cancer based on the expression of certain genes

found in the patients’ tumors.

“We could not have been more impressed with

dr. Simon and his team,” said ostraco. “What we

loved about the research team, for instance, is that

they have a plan to consider drugs that are already

fdA-approved instead of always waiting for fdA

approval on drugs that have never been used.

that seems like a great idea.”

the lefkow family hopes their donation to the

MUSC hollings Cancer Center will help lead to

new breakthroughs in lung cancer research.

dr. Simon said the lefkows’ gift has already

made it possible to hold an annual lung cancer

research conference at MUSC. the first such re-

treat was held in february 2011 and was attended

by more than 50 medical oncologists, surgeons,

pulmonologists, basic scientists, geneticists, pro-

tein chemists, lipidologists and other specialists.

“Collaboration between the different specialities

is vitally important to making discoveries,” said

Simon.

one of the retreat’s key objectives was to bring

in a leading lung cancer specialist from another

institution to review MUSC’s data and make

recommendations for improvement. “this gift

allowed us to bring in one of the top minds in

lung cancer to review our data and plans for the

future,” said Simon. “he gave us a list of very

specific recommendations and we’ve already

instituted them.”

the next lung cancer retreat has already been

planned for february 2012. “We are bringing in

another really brilliant external advisor, the top

lung cancer expert at Md Anderson,” said Simon.

“So we will report to him on our progress and

achievements over the past year and get his feed-

back on how he thinks we should continue our

research enterprise moving forward.”

ostraco, too, will be eager to hear about the

program’s progress. “I’m not interested in making

a donation and never thinking about it again,” she

said. She will receive a follow-up in writing each

year and be kept current about specific develop-

ments.

“they’ve already been very ‘hands-on’ about

keeping me informed. My husband and I were

able to attend the first conference in february and

it looks like they’re building something really spe-

cial here at MUSC,” said ostraco. “I’m so pleased

that my father’s name will be a part of it.”
