Welcome toFebruary, Hello, it’s great to be back. Happy Everything to All of You. Thanks for picking up your February issue of the Limerick Event Guide. I think some of ye thought we were gone, but I’m sure we mentioned that our chunky December number was going to carry us through to February; we had all those cracking gigs to go to, and pies to eat and laughs to have. Oh, the laughing. The big freeze of 09/10 was no joke but it sure did make for great party fodder. “The country’s run out of salt, they can have the extra sachet from my garlic and cheese chips,” ranking high on my laughed-a-little-through my nose meter. All that snow and frost and not being able to leave the house made the seasonal slow down complete. But the stretch in the evenings is coming on - {you can join now we can say ‘sure, there’s a grand stretch in the evenings’ when we talk about the weather group on facebook; a sister to the Talking about the weather is my default conversation because I am Irish group} and people, parties and projects are getting busy again. I’m feeling optimistic about 2010, and I think plenty of other people are too. It’s hard to keep a good thing down, which is why February’s cover doesn’t feature a single artist or band or event, but takes a closer look at the city of Limerick herself. She’s the most happening gig for 2010, find out why on page 11. sarah L.E.G-acy Volume 1 Issue 04 | December 04 to December 17 2001 Back in the day when Aslan were kings we featured them on our cover before another sell out show in Dolan’s. Inside we talked Nu Killa Kru, who turn Ten next month, about their club night and interviewed Limerick band Woodstar. The City Library in the Granary carries a hold in your hand, flick through the pages hard copy of every issue of the Limerick Event Guide since October 2001. Just ask the in the archive section.

01 And So I Watch You From Afar | Baker Place | Thursday Feb 11 | €Free Brash and brilliant these musical northern lights make their way south of the border for what is sure to be an electric show in Baker Place supported by Maslow and Hope is Noise. Derry born Belfast based ASIWYFA are technically superb, acoustically au fait and sonically super, hold onto your hats as this four piece instrumental juggernaut will blow you away.

5 best buys

02 Rich Hall | Dolans | Thursday March 11 | €15 A proper treat for any fans of the stand up art, Rich Hall is a familiar name/face via that tv medium we’re all so fond of, and is making his first visit to the treaty. Generally beautifully turned out in cowboy hat, the North Carolina joke-teller fresh from Have I Got News For You and The Late Show with David Letterman appearances, lands on the Dock Road as part of dot.comedy

03 Coffee & Caramel Heart | Melt Chocolate Café | all the time | €2.50Cosy little Catherine street coffee shop, Melt, eased open its doors just before Christmas, and has been providing the LEG crew with perfect coffee, a chocolate on the side and a tidy little off-street smoking section since then. You can’t miss it, tucked away behind its purple awnings. Just right for newpapers on your own or gossip with another.

04 SpeakeasyJazz Limerick presents The Sunset Cab co. | Shannon Rowing Club| Thursday Feb 11 | €10Speakeasy back in February with The Sunshine Cab Co., a four-piece instrumental group, interpretating classic funk and jazz themes with a 70’s New York downtown feel at their heart. With influences including Steely Dan, Art Blakey, Stevie Wonder, Miles Davis, and Jamiriquoi, this band is still “all about the beat: a sublime groove is paramount.” other strawberry creamy spongey things they bake too. They also make a great cup of coffee. Double score.

05 The Princess & The Frog | Storm Cinemas | from Friday, Feb 5 | €9 + popcornLEG loves the 3D, & the CGI, and we know very well that the movies Disney make for kids are for us adults too. But we do miss a little bit the way they used to make em when we were the kids, that scratchy Snow White/Bambi/Sorceror’s Apprentice buzz. Draw em by hand, we’ll still come see em, we don’t always need em jumping out at us. Just make em funny. You’ve done it with Princess…….? Thanks a mil. Check it in Storm.

GIGS Out On a Limb Records present Rest, Crayonsmith and C!ties | Upstairs @ Dolan’s | Friday February 5th

For some reason in my frequently erratic mind, I harboured a belief that C!ties would be keen fans of quantum physics. Not in the “I'm building a hadron-collider in my shed” kind of way, just a general appreciation for modern science. Perhaps I made this assumption after hearing a definite scientific approach towards song-writing on their excellent self-titled E.P released last year, or maybe I just imagined the whole thing – but eitherway, when I ask mid-interview if the band hold any interest in the molecular structure of sub-atomic particles, I'm met with blank faces and mutters of “uhhm, wha?” Damn, so I was wrong. Then I try and put the whole thing in perspective – if I was 19 again and playing gigs all over the country with some of the best names in Irish music, would I really be concerned with such trivial matters as what holds the universe together? Probably not. C!ties have bigger fish to fry. C!ties are a young three piece from Ennis, making noises and squeaks in a thoroughly energised (non-scientific) manner. And they're young. Probably too young to be as good as they already are, but then of course, they are from Clare. The birthplace of many a talented legend. Despite having cut their teeth in a couple of local indie outfits (althought they say they hate indie), band members Sean, Ian and Eoghan all claim that their current project is something that's enormously different to anything they've attempted musically before. “C!ties is definetely the most serious band we've been a part of, but it’s also the most fun. It’s the one thats achieved the most success as well, while doing something different. We got to play alot of shows with Clare Youth Service when we still lived in Ennis, and even though alot of things went wrong and we didn't really know exactly what we were doing at first, we learnt from the whole process. We were all listening to alot of similar music at the time, mainly post-rock acts like 65 Days of Static and Explosions In The Sky. Maybe one of the reasons we sounded different was because a lot of bands start practicing with bass, guitars vocals, whatever – but we actually started by writing the songs with electronic music programs. And even the electronic side of things wasn't something planned, we just

happened to be using it to create songs. We do listen to a lot of electronic music now, but back at the start, it was more about instrumental rock, to be honest.” They've squeezed quite a bit of action into the last two years, recording an EP that caused several music journalists to use big fancy words of praise and also playing every 17 year olds' birthday party in Ennis. Which of course led the way to even bigger gigs - 18th birthday parties! But from there, things moved into monstrous overdrive. Support slots with such heroes as And So I Watch You From Afar, Enemies and Adebisi Shank saw the three young bucks carting guitars, keyboards, laptops and drums onto buses destined for various spots all over the country and winning over new audiences with their continuously evolving live-show. And right now, its all about playing live. “For now until the not-too-distant future, we just want to play as many shows as we can. Literally everywhere. Try and spread the word as much as possible by playing live and then over the summer, we're hoping to write and record an album. That part isn't set in stone yet.” So no albums just yet, darling – we all have to wait. But there's definitely gigs to catch. Many, many gigs. For C!ties are making it their business to wander into every town in Ireland with their instruments slung over their shoulders like guns and a look of “I WILL ROCK YOU!!!” in their eyes. Between February and April, the threepiece will play a whopping five gigs around Limerick (amongst various other counties), including a support slot to the UK's Alright The Captain in Baker Place and an appearance at the much-anticipated Out On A Limb showcase alongside the mighty Rest and jovial Crayonsmith. Out On A Limb Records Party with Rest, Crayonsmith and C!ties hits Dolans Upstairs on Friday February 5th from 9pm with OOAL goodies for early arrivers. Check out www.myspace.com/citiesmusic for a full listing of all their upcoming shows and links to download last year's EP for free.

One of the most in demand dj's in the world, Dave Clarke has just been announced for an his first Limerick show in 7 years on Friday March 5th. A regular headliner at the world's biggest dance festivals, and host of the white noise radio show with over 1 million listeners a week around the world, he’ll be joined by Paul Webb and Dan Sykes in the main room at the Streetlife night, while upstairs the Balance Sessions will see Paul Webb's weekly Dance Music Show on Spin South West host cutting edge Dj Talent.

Dave Clarke has a well-deserved reputation as one of the best techno and electro DJs in the world but he’s always been an outsider, from his stormy childhood in the 1980s to his tempestuous relationship with the media today.

‘The school I was at was all about grooming you to be an accountant or a lawyer or in the army,’ he explains. ‘I just saw that as breaking the human spirit and constantly rebelled against it. I instinctively felt it was wrong and pointless for me. I’ve always been very, very bad at respecting authority.’

What started him on the road to where he his today was his hijacking and combining his parents’ hobbies. ‘I started playing with my mother’s records and my father’s technology,’ he

says, ‘My mother had lots of old disco records by the likes of Roy Ayers, Lonnie Liston Smith and the Crusaders, and my dad was really into technology. He had disco lights in the front room, record decks, reel-to-reels, reverb units, he even did a thing on BBC Radio about quadrophonics. It’s pretty obvious where I get it all from really.’

From soul to the Psychedelic Furs, from Devo to the nascent Chicago house sound, Clarke devoured music voraciously and blagged himself a DJ slot at a club called Toppers in Brighton. The night he played became so successful that it worried a young John Digweed whose club-night it was up against. Soon such gigs provided Clarke with a meagre living, one where he was left with a fiver a day to live on after buying records. ‘I regard that time as an apprenticeship,’ he says now.

From there, however, his gradual rise began. In 1988 he played his first foreign gig at the now-defunct Richters in Amsterdam, kickstarting a global reputation that now runs from Brazil to Singapore , from Reykjavik to Auckland, New Zealand. These days his DJ diary is booked solid six months in advance and he often headlines on the summer’s international festival circuit and then as now, he has no time for techno

purism. ‘The so-called intelligensia of the scene have done nothing but hold it back,’ he snorts dismissively, ‘The trainspotters who don’t actually dance to it have created a misleading impression of techno for the public. It’s like when you used to go into techno record shops and they’d look at you like a piece of shit if you didn’t know about it. All those shops are closed now’’

Despite the natural decline in demand for high-profile djs that was bound to follow a decade of big names and big fees, Clarke’s sets, his extraordinary mixing skills mashing up techno, electro, ghetto-tek, hip hop and even 1980s new wave numbers, have remained in constant demand.

Clarke concludes, ‘music helped me through, Music has always brought me through, even in times when I’ve had nothing. Music has given me everything and I feel I have to give everything back. I don’t know what I’d do without it, it’s in my blood and bones, the only constant throughout the whole of my life.’

Dave Clarke plays Streetlife at Dolan’s Warehouse on Friday March 5th, with tickets on sale now from Empire Music & ticketmaster outlets.

CHARITY Marco V | Trinity Rooms | Wednesday February 17

WWW.EIGHTBALL.IE FEB 2010

Good Times for Great CausesTimes may be harder but the notion of charity is alive and well as two events coming up in February show

Genius, pioneer, legend: these are words used regularly when Marco V is mentioned. Some people are born to live, breather make and play music and Marco V is one such person. Taking into consideration a number of factors... knowledge, passion and substance, a great big Funktion One Soundsystem, combine them and you get Marco V in Trinity Rooms. Like many of the world’s superstar DJs Marco was born and bred in Holland. He is a modest and down to earth family man with an undying lust for music. Entrenched in the scene from an early age, it was clear right from the start which path Marco would take.

The rest as they say is dance music history, but a history that Marco has not only shaped but continues to re-define with every thought out move. Few DJs have done more than Marco V to draw new talent into the dance music vortex. Whilst inspiring new producers, he has also been described as the DJ’s DJ with many of his colleagues closely following what he does both in the studio and behind the decks – this is testament to his impeccable taste, and unrivalled talent.

To stay ahead to the game you have to adapt as trends change, and Marco is the master at this. On the decks he holds complete control of the crowd with a style that is impossible to put into words, incorporating anything from fierce electro to driving techno and beyond. Travel the globe and you’ll be hard pushed find a major club that hasn’t felt his force.

The force that is Marco V returns to Trinity Rooms on February 17th for the Limerick Institute of Technolody Rag Week. Tickets priced €12 in the clubhouse so get down quick! For more info log onto www.trinityrooms.ie / www.marcov.nl

LEG’s paying attention to the up-front-ly named WTFITH in the first three months of the year. Starting out on the promoting trail with straight techno parties in Dolan’s back in 2005, What the Fuck’s creators have just celebrated the club’s first birthday, piling the residents on to the Undergound’s decks, and now welcome Alex Kaddour and Carlos Sanchez in February before March & April dates with Lerosa and John Daly. First up though, Kaddour & Sanchez……..

Originally from the Canary Islands, Alex Kaddour has been playing in some of the best clubs and venues for the past 10 years, holding residencies at Liquid Club and Pacha. In 2007 he managed his own successful after-hours club called Innova and welcomed fellow djs such as Tobi Neumann, Paul Ritch and Davide Squillace. Nowadays managing his own booking agency focusing on bringing DJs from quality labels over to his home ground, Kaddour’s DJ sets are mainly house with a crossover of funk and deep beats. After developing his production skills and style over the past few years, his much anticipated first release is out this month on Berlin label Lucidflow.

Carlos Sanchez meanwhile, is a producer and dj hailing from Gran Canaria. His style is very versatile but house music shines through in almost every aspect, working in deep & minimal techno, and always setting a great groove aimed straight at the dance floor. He has re-mixed records by German label Superfancy Recordings to support their artists such as Ricardo Villalobos, Dubfire, Steve Lawler, Audiofly and Nic Fanciulli, having spent ten years honing his djing craft, before adding production for the last two. Also put a heavy mark in your diary for Dublin based Lerosa, showing up with a record bag on March 13, and Ireland’s own John Daly, arriving on April 24. Rome born, Lerosa developed a love of electronic music through Italian pop music of the 1980s, before discovering hip hop and acid house . He began djing in the early 90s and in 1995 moved to Dublin where he got heavily into darker, deeper electronica and electro by the likes of Autechre, Drexciya and the extended Detroit- inspired musical underworld.

John Daly has quickly proven to be one of the most promising new producers to emerge. His productions are deep and elemental, recalling a simpler era of electronic music. After 3 EPs on the Plak label, he released his first full length album on Wave in April 2009.

Alex Kaddour & Carlos Sanchez play What The Fuck Is Tech House at the Underground on Saturday, February 20. Tickets available on the door for €7 before 11.30pm and €10 after.

* These fares are subject to availability, on selected services and are only available on irishrail.ie Some exclusion dates may apply. Credit card charges, terms and conditions will apply.

Maeve loves to blab and is pleased to have lots of new things to blab about to you. She says it’s hard to think of examples but she will definitely try to:

1. Present you with an evening of glowing fun, and 2. Not bore you, and 3. Include at least one catchphrase in each show, eg: ‘What’s good for the goose is good for the gander.’

Her new stand up comedy show ‘Blabbing Away’ is part fact, part advice, part recipe, part stupidity and ALL delivered to you in person. The Irish Times has said of Higgins warm and witty style, “ “Higgins is rarer than a blessing of unicorns…she is original and relatively calm, her observations are pithy, her wit delicate, her persona oddly alluring and deftly honest.”

Since startin out on the stand up circuit four years ago, Maeve has performed in comedy festivals around the world, including Edinburgh, Melbourne, Adelaide and Kilkenny.

In her 2006 debut show, Ha Ha Yum, at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Maeve did stand-up while her sister Lilly

made cakes. The show went on to a season in Dublin’s prestigious Andrews Lane Theatre, followed by a sold-out stand-up tour around Ireland. In 2008, the show was invited to Melbourne for their comedy festival. In between that, Maeve wrote and performed two more solo shows in 2007 and brought a brand new show Kitten Brides to the Edinburgh festival in 2008.

Maeve rapidly rose to an uncomfortable level of notoriety on the most watched comedy TV show in the country; RTÉ’s Naked Camera which was on air until 2007 and is still showing as repeats on the channel. In 2009 her own TV show Fancy Vittles, in which she’s again accompanied by sister Lilly, debuted on RTÉ Two. A delightful mix of cookery, sketch, comedy and archive footage the show was brought back for a Yuletide Chrsitmas Special which aired over Christmas week. Maeve’s also a regular contributor to the Ray D’arcy Show on Today FM. Maeve Higgins performs live in Dolans on Thursday 4th February 2010 at 8pm. The Limerick Event Guide takes another look with our cover story this month at the always on, al-ways open, all are welcome event that is Limerick city and county. Keeping the wide zoom lens lit, L.E.G turns the spotlight on one innovative initiative, one distinctive building development and one key sporting event that will maxim-ise our human and constructed resources to create social, economic and community opportunities that benefit our immediate, near and faraway futures

Creative Limerick: Connecting to the Grid — How to Solve Puzzling Problems {and keep everybody busy} What’s the problem? Many businesses have closed and new developments are stalled in limbo creating Slack Spaces; a nifty moniker for the empty Georgian buildings and echoing new retail spaces lying idle in Limerick. Slack has a warmer ring to it than dead. Slack is what happens to your muscles when you don’t go to the gym, they still have potential but are not quite operating at their peak. Slack spaces prompt less foot-fall which mean less trading which creates a tangential problem; lots of able, willing and creative people wanting to live, make and do here. How do we keep everybody busy? So, what have we got to work with? People & SpaceWhat can we do with what we have? Creative Talent + Limerick Spaces = Creative Limerick

What’s it all about? Creative Limer-ick was launched last September by the Planning and Economic Develop-ment Department of Limerick City

Council as a pilot initiative to ad-dress the acute issue of slack space in Limerick.

Project Manager Lise-Ann Sheahan explained to L.E.G how the proposal evolved from a roundtable discussion among the eighteen staff of that Department in Limerick City Council. Drawing inspiration from existing projects in similar size cities across Europe and using extensive data gathered by University of Limerick work placement students on the make-up and breakdown of vacancy, occupancy and use of every building and space in the city environs, the team constructed a uniquely Limerick solution to Limerick’s individual problems. By mediating between commercial property owners and communicating with creative practitioners, initially through Limerick’s colleges, Creative Limerick was able to bring these two groups together. In partnership with key property owners, proactive auctioneers, the various Council departments and councillors Creative Limerick secured vacant retail units and shopfronts and worked out the niggly yet essential details of insuring and managing these properties so that students, graduates, practitioners and professionals could create and/or display their wares inside for free, except for the electricity bill, and in safe and suitable environments. Lise-Ann adds, “The project builds Limerick’s creative capital in all spheres by supporting not only the creative industries in Limerick but by assisting vacant property owners by keeping their premises clean and active at no cost to them while bringing their buildings to public attention for all the right reasons.”

Creative Limerick enhances the vibrancy of empty city centre shopfronts while promoting and bolstering the local creative industries of graduates, students and professionals working in advertising, architecture, art, street art, antiques, computers and gaming, crafts, design, fashion, film and video, music, performing arts, publishing and software, radio, film and televison. All the things that make life worth living after eating, sleeping, loving and being loved really. The pilot was a phenomenal success with seven shopfronts selling or promoting creative products. Two spaces were opened as active galleries; Occupy Space on Thomas Street and AllOutDesigns on Sarsfield Street. Creative Limerick was an associate partner of the pioneering Spiritstore Art Café and ran a Guerrilla Cinema on Bedford Row. Lise-Ann emphasised that huge thanks are due to, “the heads and staff of the Planning and Economic Development Departments and all the other Departments and staff in City Council along with councillors, property owners, their representatives, staff of the Third Level Institutions, local creatives, our graphic designers, the media and all who gave their support, time and expertise.” A less tangible but equally profound upshot of Creative Limerick has been the sense of possibility and community engendered among local practitioners in art, graffiti, dance, fashion and music while the wider community enjoys the accelerated activity and exceptional output displayed in these high profile city centre areas.Creative Limerick: 2010 and beyond...Phase One: Creative Shopfronts & Phase Two: Creative Studio Spaces

took off during the pilot scheme and will continue to animate Limerick in the years ahead. The following phases are more ambitious in their scope and aspirations and will change the living reality and widespread perception of Limerick city centre in the longer-term. Phase Three: Creative Quarter aims to revitalise the Georgian Quarter by creating Live and Work Home / Studio spaces for practitioners and professionals. Whether you are an architect or a software programmer, a recent graduate or established professional, finding a reasonably priced studio/work space to create your work to generate your wages and to pay your rent is a challenge, but one many people want to take on. Creative Quarter seeks to reclaim derelict or empty buildings, and in tandem with the owners, redevelop them to create Live / Work spaces with a business and resource hub in the Tait Centre making the challenge of working for yourself less daunting. Phase Four: Crafty Thinkers will develop tourism services and amenities in the oft-overlooked Medieval Quarter around Nicholas Street and King John’s Castle which fulfills the dual purposes of making the area more of an attraction for tourists and locals while giving Craft and Artisan folk an economic and social nucleus for their community based around a Craft Studio Scheme, Craft Shopfronts and Events, a Café and Craft Tours promoted with Crafty Thinkers branding and street signage. Why L.E.G loves Creative Limerick: This project builds on everything that is positive and sustainable in Limerick; our creative community and the people who support it; our remodelled city centre streets and the beautiful buildings that sit on

them; our excellent universities and the motivated and inspired graduates that throng out of them. L.E.G will be following the activities and outputs of Creative Limerick and keeping you up to date in the months to come. Until then: Search Occupy Space & Faber Studios & AllOutDesign on Facebook and visit the Creative spaces on Thomas, Catherine, Sarsfield Streets and Bedford Row. If you would like more information on Creative Limerick please email [email protected] Remodelling The Milk Market1852 to 2010; a modern market in the great tradition Saturday morning at the Milk Market hits all the senses, with immediate impact, and reflects the distinctive character of Limerick. Rallying traders and enticing consumers from the farmland of the country borders and the stone’s throw distance of inner city apartments, the Milk Market IS Limerick in a heady microcosm. Only in our Milk Market can you savour the most delectable artisan cheeses within the courtyard and buy yourself a new fireplace on the way out. A place where gourmet hot dog makers and chocolatiers trade across from flower sellers and beside family run fruit and veg stalls. Where the über- chic twenty somethings share in demand coffee tables with hip grannies and their extended families. A central area where you can find fresh fish and homemade breads and cakes and handmade soaps and yummy soups and dusty antiques and plants on your leisurely wander, soundtracked by buskers and gossip and trader’s calls while grazing on tasty food all morning easing yourself into the weekend. The Limerick Milk Market

is the quintessential community space. Under the stewardship of the Limerick Market Trustees the first stone in the remodelling of the Milk Market was turned in November 2009 with the market ontrack to re-open for extended trading in early summer 2010. Opening Old Markets to Future PossibilitesThe €2 million modernisation of the Milk Market creates a weather protected and extended trading domain sector to the principal arteries of the city centre. Chairman of the Board of the Market Trustees David O’Mahony explains, “Our aim is to develop a monthly market calendar with perhaps thirty slots and to have this market coincide with what people want, building on our current Saturday market. There could be a flower market one day a month or a craft market with changing market activity based around a core market with permanent units open Monday to Saturday, which would also provide core market activity.” One of the country’s oldest markets, trading since 1852 the Milk Market won a European Heritage Award in 1995 after the first enterprising redevelopment of the space. The construction underway in 2010 is part of this evolution and will affirm the Milk Market’s importance as “an area of significant attraction” in Limerick. “Where do markets come from?” asks O’ Mahony, “They came from people wanting to come together and barter goods but also as a meeting place to exchange stories, fun, activities. So you think of the old traditional idea and the modern idea of the market and put the two of them together and you have something that is a lot more city and community based than

anything that is going on anywhere else. Also, one big element of this is that you are fostering local enterprise. You’re depending on local producers, giving them platforms to trade out there. We want to have it as a viable, sustainable market area that will have a large community element to it.”

The Milk Market as a Community HubMarket Trustees give first priority to developing the Milk Market as “a viable market and area of significant attraction in Limerick” but aims to build a public area that people will want to spend time in. The Market Trustees have spoken to several locally based organisation from Lyric FM, to Daghdha, the Irish Chamber Orchestra and Eighball Promotions & Media about the logistics of running events or activities there and Mr O’ Mahony is enthusisatic about the possibilities, “We want to make it an attraction in its own right during market days and at other times. You could have street theatre or a cookery demonstration, outdoor concerts or performances or a board games area. That’s one of my favorites to have a board games room where people could come along bring their snakes and ladders or backgammon and get a paper and a coffee and a patiserrie and the tables and the facilities would be there for you. The Milk Market will have it’s own identity, it will not replicate any area anywhere else.”

Why L.E.G loves the Milk Market: From an alternate place to meet friends for lunch to an active space for events and extended trading the Remodelled Milk Market will be open for all kinds of business from early summer.

Which was Limerick 2010 and Beyond: A Hub for Creative Thinking, Living and Working? Creative Limerick, the development of the Milk Market and Special Olympics Ireland Games are all happening in Limerick in 2010 but laying the groundwork has taken decades. The tough times of the past two years cannot reverse the exceptional developments, innovations and expansions of the preceding two decades which are visible across the city and county. We’ve constructed the roads, buildings and bridges. We have the intellectual, artistic, economic and cultural capital. The next decade is Limerick’s time to redefine herself according to how we how we see and experience our city living, working and creating here. Limerick IS where the action will be in the next decade. Believe it. ** The R-word was not employed once in the writing of this article.

giveamanakick | final showDolan’s WarehouseFriday December 18 2009

Always a sad time when a band calls time, most especially when that band kicks ass. giveamanakick gave one hell of a farewell gig in Dolan’s Warehouse on December 18th. Their farewell tour saw them play to full houses in Galway, Cork, Dublin, Mullingar and Waterford but their final ever gig was in their hometown of Limerick. Steve and Keith were bursting with punk rock energy as always, in fact it was seeping from every pore, which in turn ignited a raw energy from the crowd.GAMAK played a variety of favourites from their three albums: ‘Say No to Sports’ from ‘Is It Ok to Be Loud, Jesus?’ to ‘Let God Touch Your Children’ from ‘We Are The Way Forward’. They even treated us to ‘Darko Filopovic’, an old song which they don’t usually play live. It was a night of mayhem, punk rock, sentimentality, and a few tears I’d imagine-the big hug the guys gave each other at the end of the gig brought a lump to my throat anyway. For the grand finale, GAMAK went out on a cover of ‘We Built this City on Rock and Roll’. GAMAK- rock and roll won’t be the same without you. Ciara Peters

The Night After ChristmasAn empty factory on the borderSaturday December 26 2009Rave Review: Paralegal sage sparks Rave.

Like any good underground event getting there proved to be a missionand an opportunity to cement relationships that would prove to behilarious. The secret location wasn’t kept so for long, the mayhem that was the buses soon forced revelers to make their own way. As rumors of thewhereabouts of the undisclosed location filtered through from texts and taxi drivers we made our way by

foot and fare. Dressed for a party in my best luminous attire, glow-stick in hand, I was not prepared for the sub zero march out a country road. Warmed only by Buckfast and anticipation, I wrangled a lift with two young tracksuited gents who were more than generous with their conversation and party favorites. These weren’t the type of locals I would usually choose to spend a Saturday night with but if a party like this is about anything its about leaving your prejudices safely at the coat check and never coming back for them. What a sight to behold and asound that I haven’t experienced since 1995. The gut churning wobble and the outstanding graffiti worked in poetic tandem with the tripped out bug eyed mass. And who can’t remember how sweet those bass drops sounded when rushing on your second 2CB. If the reunion on the 13th in Dolans is even a tenth of this, it’s gonna be fierce.Rapid Tackies The Night After Christmas Reunion Rave kicks off in Dolan’s Warehouse on Saturday February 13th with Dan Sykes, Tokin’ Whiteboy, Ruan Flood & Dj Deadly Buzz. Doors @ 9pm, entry only €6, with a free beer for early arrivers. Choke Comedy Improv & Freeform FoundationThursday January 28thBelltable Arts Centre & Shannon Rowing Club The Belltable Unfringed Festival signals an exit from he post New Year’s doldrums falling as it does at January’s end. 2010 saw a lighter programme running over five days, but the Belltable haven’t eschewed quality to work within the boundaries of these tighter times, showcasing a wealth of local talent in a line-up that includes some fittingly fringe elements. Limerick’s Choke Comedy have been drawing great crowds

to the Belltable for their monthly unhinged Improv nights and their popularity was emphasised when they filled the Belltable and then some for their Unfringed piece, Pure Sketchy. This 90 minute or so show sketch show took the group out of their comfort zone, as they built up a panorama of Limerick city moving the action from the People’s Park, to a local community centre, to a middle class dinner party via the hang-out of a mixed bag of local criminals. Choke’s Improv nights are built on the interaction between the audience and the players, without this hook it fell to the Choke team to maintain the pace which had some ebbs and flows, but Unfringed asks for risks to be taken and Choke did that. With some sketches landing better than others, in all Choke attempted to climb a slippery comedy mountain and succeeded.

Moving swiftly from the packed Belltable to the equally busy Shannon Rowing Club I caught the long and beautifully winding second half of a rare show by Limerick’s Freeform Foundation who were guests of Speakeasyjazz. Billed as a funk, groove, and jazz inspired improv group, they did not disappoint. Meandering but never loosing the hook, wandering without becoming self-indulgent with the riffs, raising the tempo without ever running off without the musical cart they played to a hugely appreciative crowd until well past my bedtime. Excellent stuff.Sarah Choke Comedy Improv return to the Belltable Interim Space on Cecil Street on Thursday February 18th @ 8pm. Speakeasyjazz welcomes The Sunshine Cab Company followed by Dj Jeff Ree to the Shannon Rowing Club on Thursday February 11th.

Hailing from Manchester, Delphic appear to be carrying the heavy weight of the city’s musical history on their backs (they are already being hailed as the next New Order). The album opens with “Clarion Call”, throwing up explosive synths and a frantic rhythm. The pace (and overall consistency of that pace) of this record is exhilarating, there is no such thing as a “slow song” on show. And coupled with effective looping vocals- this is a pretty good illustration of a 4 piece band going out there to make quality dance music. Their sound conjures up flashbacks of the glory days of Underworld, Orbital and the likes. “This Momentary” fuses Underworld’s interface of prog rock and driving beats with Orbital’s euphoria inducing electronica. The title track “Acolyte” sounds like Sasha back in the days when he was pushing the progressive trance brigade with the likes of the “Xpander EP”. Yet while there are pretty blatant nods to yesteryears dance luminaries, Delphic still sound like they are a traditional four piece band as “Halcyon” (ironically the title of an Orbital classic) demonstrates. Delphic are picking up the indie-rave baton and carrying it on with a newfound energy and credibility.

*****themselves on having a unique sound separate from their influences (Interpol, Muse etc.) yet their influences styles are all on show here, which isn’t an entirely bad thing. There is a lot of potential here, if they let those feisty riffs lead their sound. “Think its Time” is one of those rather gripping bi-polar songs as it has a steady flow like The National but intermittently has raucous guitar work that highlights where this bands true potential lies. The downtempo interludes they have in their songs are slightly tame and unimaginative, yet when they kick it into 5th gear they instantly captivate.David Morrissey

2010. Drawing inspiration from many genres, John Shelly & The Creatures have a knack for blending rock, folk, country and blues to create a sound that is easy listening but never flat, infectious without becoming obnoxious, sweet but not saccharine. Just plain lovely really. None of the band members are called John or Shelly, with Kev Carlisle on drums and percussion, Philip Watts d’Alton on guitar, keys and mandolin, Ger Gormley on bass, guitar and another mandolin and Walter rounding out the sound on guitar, keys, programming and drums, all members contrbute vocals creating a full sound that packs a light and dreamy punch. ——————————————Tasty [legal] downloadsC!ties E.P: If you haven’t got this already then hop to it. BROTHERSRelease Date: 22 January 2010Director: Jim Sheridan Starring: Tobey Maguire, Jake Gyllenhaal, Natalie Portman, Carey MulliganDetails: US/110mins (15A)

THE ROADRelease Date: 08 January 2009Director: John Hillcoat.Starring: Viggo Mortensen, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Charlize Theron, Robert Duvall.

UP IN THE AIRRelease Date: 15 January 2010Director: Jason ReitmanStarring: George Clooney, Jason Bateman, Anna Kendrick, Vera Farmiga

As a showcase for movie stars that can actually act, this remake of the 2004 Danish film of the same name works a dream. It may end with too much of a ponderous whimper for some, but for the most part, this is some stirring drama. Maguire is the eldest of two brothers, and is about to ship off to war in Afghanistan. The younger brother, Gyllenhaal, has just gotten out of prison and instantly slots back into his role as the family screw up. When Maguire's revered marine goes missing at war and is assumed killed in action, Gyllenhaal's sibling straightens himself out enough to help out Portman's grieving wife and her two young daughters. But after the heroic marine returns home from a horrendous ordeal in captivity, he struggles to cope with the painful memories of what he's been through. As with a lot of Sheridan's productions the acting is the main reason to see this. Maguire gives easily his strongest performance to date; his intense turn managing to stimulate both fear and sympathy. Gyllenhaal's best scenes are with a subdued but effective Sam Shepard, while Portman is nice fit as the dutiful wife. Brothers is made look like a straight-up thriller, which it really isn’t. There is an underlining tension running throughout that only really only becomes overtly visible when Maguire returns home; but this isn't a thriller, it's a family drama. With that in mind, you should enjoy Brothers, as it never deviates from an admirable realism - a testament to Sheridan's steady hand guiding it.

Cormac McCarthy's post-apocalyptic story is as bleak as they come but thanks to stirring performances from Mortensen and Smit-McPhee its heart outweighs even its grimmest of moments. Set some time after a unnamed disaster has rendered the world almost uninhabitable, where society has broken down and gangs of gun-toting cannibals roam the now deserted roads, a Man (Mortensen) and a Boy (Smit-McPhee) struggle south in search of warmth and food. With only a revolver for protection, the father and son team wander through the wintry landscape avoiding marauding thieves and killers.Driven by nothing but survival, the Man and the Boy constantly face tasks and situations that strip away their morality. Mortensen is a shoe-in for an Oscar nomination, balancing gritty determination with despair. His tired, sombre voice narrates the film, which allows the viewer a peak into his true feelings, feelings he has to cover up for his son's sake. Director John Hillcoat showed in his last film, The Proposition, that less is more and he continues that motif here. The audience is never privy to what tragedy befell the world - nuclear war or environmental - and even the flashbacks to where Mortensen attempts to keep wife Charlize Theron together, as despair tears her mind apart, don't help on that front. The only fly in the ointment is the ending, which I will try to cover here without spoiling it. The climax of the book didn't sit right given what went before; Joe Penhall's adaptation sticks as rigidly to the book as he can and keeps McCarthy's closing scene and the jury is still out on that.

Poignant, funny, charming and sadly relevant, this excellent film marks a new high in the career of George Clooney, and once again showcases Jason Reitman's ability to deliver superb character-driven cinema. Clooney is Ryan Bingham, a man who has long finished trying to have a fulfilling relationship with anyone. He spends the vast majority of his time either in the air, or at hotels, enjoying the mandatory VIP treatment that approaching ten million air miles gives him. When a 23 year old Cornell graduate at his company figures out a way to streamline the firings, Bingham is disgusted, and takes her on the road to train her in, in turn showing her just how difficult the job actually is. During one of his many trips, he shares some cutting banter with Vera Farmiga's fellow traveller and the two strike up an arrangement to meet whenever possible. Soon, they find themselves enjoying each other's company for more than just the sex. Jason Reitman's beautifully ponderous film works, on more than just one level. The young helmer manages to convey the subtle, but vast, depths of emotion of his lonely central character, while still making him inherently likeable. The, at times, solemn tone gives way to equal amounts of charm, and comedy, as well as a sadly relevant look at the current state of the world economy. While all the performances are universally exceptional, this is George Clooney's movie, and when the camera moves in on a close-up on his face in one particular scene, you'll see some of finest acting in recent memory. He is outstanding, as is this entire production.

----------------------------Dolan’s Warehouse Thursday March 11----------------------------Looking like a wizened cowboy, the master of absurdist irony Rich Hall likes to lay into Americans and life across the Pond opening one show with the line, ‘Well I’m an American and.. I’m sorry for everything.” Dry doesn’t quite capture the seemingly lackadaisical way he delivers his biting, sharp, shrewd and whacked out observations on life with no subject matter off limits. He quit his job as a hurricane namer for the U.S Meteorological Service 18 years ago drifting from street performance where he got people to act out horror films to commentating at donkey basketball games. He went onto to tour with his stand up act as a support to the Talking Heads. Since those early days he has become a regular at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and performed at the major comedy clubs across the world. Well known in the United States for appearing and writing on The David Letterman Show Hall scooped an Emmy for his work on the show. Arguably one of the sharpest comedians alive today Hall’s appearance in Dolan’s should not be missed. For Info and tickets log onto www.dolans.ie
