In the spirit of Freemasonry, it behooves all of us to consider our responsibilities to our breth-ren. When we agree to help, aid and assist etc., we must include, whenever possible, our attendance at Ma-sonic Memorials. I have attended a few such services, so few that I am now very sorry. In several of thoseservices the Masonic attendance was limited to those who took part in the ceremony and, perhaps, to a few

family and friends who may have been members of the Fraternity.Especially here in Florida, where many services are performed at the request of family for members of lodges in

other jurisdictions, it would be more appreciated by the family were we to make a greater showing of brotherly love byfilling the small chapel with our presence.

Also consider the impression it would make on those non-members who might get the idea that joining a Lodgemight be an excellent way to honor their loved one!

    Chaplin, Jim Reynolds

As I write this, I'm thinking back a little. The last Saturday in March I was accompanied by SW W:.John Haas and JD Jeff Lamb to Melbourne, for the Zone 5 Masonic Leadership Training Seminar. Our firstmeeting in April had me wearing my tricon (three cornered hat) again, in honor of those colonists who rose

up and challenged British rule in North America. Concord and Lexington "The shots heard around the world",truly, the first big defeat the British ever had. Yes, Masons were involved in the forming of our country. FromBrother Paul Revere (silver smith) riding through the country side calling the minute men to arms. Endingwith General (Brother) George Washington (the gentleman farmer) accepting the conditions of surrender ofthe British on behalf of the colonists in America. These United States from the start, very much like ourselves, have had times of joy and sadness, plenty and not so plenty. Like us, times of anger and times of peace. Yet sofar, we the people have remained FREE. To this we have only a very few men and women willing to fight tosave these freedoms. When you see a member of our armed forces give them a THANK YOU, and don't be

bashful to thank the veterans who went before to serve this country. On the 10th of April the Grand Lodge of Florida Held a Legislative Meeting in Zone 4 at Marion-Dunn

Lodge. This was to pass out the proposed Legislative changes that will be voted on at the Grand Communica-

tion held in Orlando. First, each Lodge will discuss these proposed changes. Then, during the Grand Lodge ofFlorida Stated Communication 26 May thru 29 May, the three principle officers of each Lodge will vote thewill of their Lodges. All Master Masons may attend Grand Lodge but only those three officers will be eligibleto vote. Come and see how your Grand Lodge works for you.

May is one of our United States sad but remembered months. Memorial Day is a day of remembrance, set aside to pay homage to those men and women who gave the ultimate price defending our FREEDOM.

    God Bless All,W:.M:. Jim Angelos

    Friend to Friend

Brethren, this July marks the 150th anniversary of the battle ofGettysburg. For those of you who are not familiar with the

significance of this battle it was the turning point of the CivilWar. The battle was fought over three days, ending in what isknown as Picketts Charge. Confederate General George E.

Pickett, a member of Dove Lodge #51, Richmond, VA, was tolead a frontal assault against a well-entrenched Union Armycommanded by General Winfield Scott Hancock, a member ofCharity Lodge #190, Norristown, PA. One of the Generalsunder Picketts command was Lewis Addison Armistead, a

Mason who was a member of Alexandria-Washington MasonicLodge #22, Alexandria, VA and a personal friend of GeneralHancock. During the battle General Armistead is shot severaltimes. Lying on the ground and realizing his injuries were se-vere, he calls out for help. No one answers. Next he gives the

Masonic Grand Hailing Sign. Union Captain Henry H. Bing-ham, a doctor and member of Chartiers Lodge #297, Canons-burg, PA, comes to his aid and tends his wounds. General Ar-mistead, realizing he is mortally wounded and there was verylittle the doctor could do for him, directs his concerns towardshis old friend Union General Hancock. The doctor tells Ar-mistead that his friend has also been wounded but his injurieswere not severe. At this time General Armistead hands thedoctor his pocket watch and Bible and asked if he would passthem on to his friend General Hancock. The doctor assureshim that he would pass those items along. General Armisteaddied a few days later.

Brethren, youve often heard the Civil War was fought brother

against brother. Well, this was a story of how one Masonicbrother brought aid and comfort to another. It makes one won-der what is it about our Fraternity that creates such a strongbond that we are willing to put our differences aside and giveaid to one another. I believe it has to do with The Tenets of our

profession -- Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth.

In Gettysburg Pennsylvania there is a monument that was com-missioned by the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania depicting Con-federate General Armistead handing his watch and bible toUnion Captain Henry Bingham. It is known as the Friend toFriend Masonic Memorial. A plaque on the back has this dedi-cation: This monument is presented by the Right Worshipful

Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of Pennsylvaniaand dedicated as a memorial to the Freemasons of the Unionand the Confederacy. Their unique bonds of friendship enabledthem to remain a brotherhood undivided, even as they fought ina divided nation, faithfully supporting the respective govern-ments under which they lived."

I happened to be there during the dedication of the monumentalong with many other masons. It was a pretty impressivesight. Ive included a picture of the monument for your

    viewing. S.W. John Haas(pictures on Page 16)

W Hank DeBerryHello again Brothers! I have much good news

for you this month! We have a new man coming into masonryand two brothers coming in to the Lodge through transfer anddemit! Mr. John M. Thomas has petitioned for the three de-grees and Bro. Dale Miller and Bro. Gary Towne have peti-tioned for affiliation. Lets all make them feel welcome when

we see them in Lodge.Brothers we now have 46 sponsors for the Trestle Board and

I am happy to say that we are growing! We only need 14 moresponsors to reach our goal and not use any Lodge funds to mailit out. The most recent monthly e-mail version is 14 pages andI hope to expand to 20 pages by the end of summer. That is,if you Brothers will give me something to put in it! I amvery happy to include Bro. Jeff Lambs Comedy Corner thismonth because we all need a little humor in our lives especiallyif it pokes fun at ourselves and not others. I am sure some ofyou other Brothers have something you wish to say, so write itout and let me put it out there for all of us to see and hear. Ifyou would rather get the e-mail version than the printed ver-sion, Please let me know by e-mail to hde-

[email protected] so I can take you off the print listand save the Lodge some money. Every penny counts Broth-ers.

How about our attendance in Lodge? Do you know of aBrother who might need a ride to Lodge? Who might attend ifhe just had someone to help him get there? If you are such aBrother and in need then please call the Lodge office at 352-787-5696 and leave a message with name and phone numberso we can contact you. If you can provide a ride for a Brotherplease call and leave your name and number also and maybewe can get the two of you together and fill some seats in theLodge. Also on the matter of attendance in Lodge, I haveplaced a survey that can be printed out and faxed or mailed inor dropped off to the Lodge on page 13. I hope all of you will

take a few minutes of your busy schedule to fill this survey outand let your Lodge elected Officers know what they can do tomake this Lodge better for you.

Dont forget our Grand Lodge Communication at the end ofthis month. All Master masons are encouraged to attend. There is new legislation coming out that will affect all Brothersin our state. I will have a special edition of the Trestle Boardcoming out to you on this legislation so that you can read anddecide for yourself how you want your officers to vote. If youwish to attend, please contact me so I can get your credentialssent in to the Credentials committee and you wont have towait for them when you arrive.

Hopefully, by now the new specialty plate for Ma-sons has been approved thanks to your support by sending in

the letters to your Representatives and Senators. This is muchneeded funds that can be added to our Masonic Home Endow-ment Fund.

Thats it for this month Brothers. As always it is great to beyour Secretary and communicate with you in Lodge and out ofit. Dont forget our Masonic Home is in need of our help andmay God Bless our men and women in uniform, and keep themfrom harm.

Bro. Saul GoodkinAt our monthly dinner we served 75 paid in-

dividuals. We made some money which was thenput into the kitchen account. Now we have moneyfor the food for our next Saturday breakfast. Wehave a wonderful crew in the kitchen and reallythank them all for their voluntary good work. Larryis really the person who makes this all happen.

We have been busy in the Lodge kitchen tak-ing care to bring it up to code. We had to get oursteam table changed so that it can shut off automati-cally. We also added a lever to shut off the gasmanually where it comes in to prevent an emer-gency. We are also repairing the stove so that ourpilot lights work. All this is happening this month ofApril 2013. This will put us in code with the City ofLeesburg Utilities Dept.

Brethren, we need support to pay for all this.We need more of you to come to our fun fundraisingbreakfasts. Come out and socialize with the brothersand enjoy a really great breakfast. I hope to see newfaces at breakfast the first Saturday in May from8AM to 10AM, You ALL come out--you hear!!

    WHAT WILL YOU DO

My brothers have you thought about what you will dowith the remainder of your estate after all your bills andfinal expenses are paid. Have you considered leaving a

small stipend to your Lodge. We have had several broth-ers leave a stipend to the Lodge. These have ranged froma small donation to a large estate. We've had a brotherdonated his estate which was sizable to the Masonichome and our Lodge got credit for it. We've had brothersleave us their estate and we did not even know about itfor several months. In one case the executor waited sev-eral months to let us know, and several weeks before se-curing the house. We were able to prove that, in that pe-riod of time, several items were removed from the estatesuch as Rolex watches, guns and large screen TVs. Wewere never able to recover any of that material but the

executor did pay us a nominal $2000 fee. If we hadknown that we were mentioned in the will we could havedone more due diligence and perhaps saved some of theitems. If you are considering leaving the Lodge a dona-tion then tell the Secretary that the Lodge is mentioned inyour will. If you haven't left a donation to the Lodge andyou don't have plans for all of your estate then considerleaving a token to our Lodge. This you may do by simplyadding a codicil (amendment) to your existing will. Yourofficers have proven to be good shepherds of the trustfunds this Lodge has received.

    GRAND MASTER

    DISCOURSE

    Getting Back to BasicsDear Brothers:

As I read our history I often wonder if our prede-cessors would recognize us today as Masons. Sure we callourselves Masons and we have many of the same thingsthey had, but I just wonder if they would see us as Masons. The archives of Masonry have recorded many of ourpredecessors leadership skills and knowledge of Masonrythese generations of Masons, were well grounded on themission and vision of Freemasonry. They knew and under-stood the importance and responsibility of delivering pos-terity to a Craft that would be unimpaired from innovation. They are the Masons we revere but fail to imitate; they arethe Masons we cite but fail to understand, they are the Ma-

sons we were inspired by, but fail to see their purpose. Yetthe answer to our future is well grounded in our past. TheMasons of yesterday understood their duty and faithfullyexecuted their obligations, this is why we admire and re-spect them, and when asked about famous Masons we citethem over and over again. Very seldom do we mention oreven know a Mason that is contemporaneous with us thatwe can cite as a living legend or one that has recentlypassed.

If we look at Freemasonry from the perspective ofthe leaders of yesterday one thing will ring true every sin-gle time and that is their passion for education, for self-improvement through knowledge, for practicing their ritualand for making Masonry a way of life. All of this whileusing the Holy Scriptures as our Guiding Light, the oneindispensable book of knowledge we cannot function with-out and which so much of our ritual can be found in itspages.

What we all need is a good dosage of GettingBack To Basics and we start this with accountability. Ifyou are looking at taking on a committee appointment, place or station in your Lodge you will ask for directionand information on your new commitment that you mayunderstand the responsibilities that you will enjoined inorder that you can fulfill your obligations in this new posi-tion.

Your new job description will be found in theDigest, Masonic Leadership Training, Masonic EducationBooklets, Monitor, etc., and whether you can find it or notin these publications discuss your new found knowledgeand responsibility with the person appointing you, yourMentor, or a learned Brother and how you will proceed inthe discharge of your new obligations to ensure that youunderstand them correctly before executing your duties.Next we have to work on our Lodge, are we making ourmeetings interesting, are we delivering what the Brothersare looking for in our communications, do we have a userfriendly atmosphere and are we giving value for the timespent by the Brothers in our Lodges. If you have not beendoing this before today you may need to start by asking ofthe Brothers what they are looking for or you may want totake the leadership role and present different scenarios on

what could be added to enhance the Masonic experience at ourmeetings.

With the exposure that Masonry has received in the differ-ent medias, our mysteries have received a lot of attention and manynon-Masons have given them what they perceive to be our mean-ings, this has caused our Brethren to want to know more, the newBrothers to look into our mysteries and candidates to knock on ourdoors and what have we done about exposing our members to thissubject nothing by far for the most part. There are many ways we can do this we can create a committee to

bring presentations from learned Brothers in our Lodge, District, orin or out of our State to visit our Lodges and bring forth knowledgethat we can all learn from and enjoy. We can couple this with a nicedinner or lunch well prepared and served appropriately to make thisa special occasion that will attract the Brothers back to the nextpresentations.

We are happy to see that more Brothers and Lodges areseeking this route and creating an interest with these seminars andare bringing in caliber speakers to present exciting programs full ofinformation that make for an interesting program and create a questfor further knowledge and this is good for everyone involved.Let us regroup and find our roots, we need to be well grounded inour past in order to chart a course for the future and the past in Ma-sonry is not measured by the last ten or twenty years, that is not

sufficient to see any changes in Masonry since it moves very slow.We need to look at cycles in order to properly compare and you willfind many similarities which can teach us how to chart for our fu-ture considering our past.

We need to solidify our ritual by improving on our accu-racy and delivery. Mentoring is paramount to our success and wher-ever practiced according to the guidelines it works, builds fellow-ship, and improves in knowledge. We need Officers that demon-strate that they care not by words but by deeds. We need Lodgesthat are financially viable. We need to have buildings that are invit-ing after all they are our windows to the outside world and speakvolumes of who we are. We need to explore our past and revitalizeour passion for our mysteries and cause in depth studies of themlike our predecessors use to do that we can improve ourselves mor-

ally and spiritually. There is no magic bullet and if we work collectively in-stead of trying to find the magic bullet independently we can cer-tainly improve our situation quicker. We can turn this Fraternityaround sooner rather than later and if everyone would work togethertrying to find the solution instead of working twice as hard to beingan obstacle we will be a lot better off.

This notion that we continue to shoot ourselves in the footjust so that we can prove the others that are trying to do somethinggood, but we dont like, were wrong has lead us on the wrong pathover and over again, and yet we dont even realize what we are do-ing.

Our quest for quantity has not been vanquished and manyof the leadership continue to look for numbers coming in while ig-

noring the numbers they already have, simply because they havegeared for recruiting and never looked at the retention side. Thisneeds to be a two prong program we take in only those qualifiedwith an eye on QUALITY while we have the other eye on educa-tion of those we need to RETAIN by improving their Masonic Ex-perience.Respectfully and Fraternally Submitted, I remain your most humbleservant

Leesburg Lodge would like to Congratulate Sister Linda Every on being elected Associate Grand Con-

ductress of the Grand Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star of Florida at the Grand Chapter meeting held in

St Augustine, FL on April 24th -26th. This is a wonderful accomplishment that is well deserved. Sister Linda

has worked tirelessly for Leesburg Chapter 84 OES as a Plural member, an officer and Past Matron of the

Chapter. She is a member of Tavares Chapter and has been a member of the Eastern Star since 1977, when

she was originally initiated in Umatilla Chapter. Born in the town of Mineral Wells, Texas she came to us in

Florida in 1969. She and her husband of fifty years (this May 15) Bob, started their business in Umatilla in

1978. She and Bob have two sons living in the Tampa area and one daughter in Umatilla who works in the

family business. In 1985, Linda stepped up and was elected Mayor of Umatilla to fill an unexpired term for

the office that had been left empty by the passing of the current mayor. Always an achiever in the Eastern

Star, she was named Grand Esther in 1996-97. She has held several offices in the Grand Chapter ranging

from District Chairman of several committees and funds, to State Chairman of R.E.S.T. committee, to The

    Worthy Grand Matrons personal secretary.

This is a picture of a lady driven to excel in all that she does and will be an asset to the Grand Chapter

line of Officers. We can expect great things over the next four years and we in Leesburg Lodge 58 and Lees-

burg Chapter 84 OES wish her all the very best in her future and on her road to the East.

The new year has just started, but Mount Dora RainbowAssembly No. 79 has had a busy 2013. After travels within the18th Masonic District for installations, we held our own Installa-tion of Officers in January. Miss Janile Ramos was installed asWorthy Advisor. theme for the term, based on the Disney movie UP and has cho-

sen Camp Boggy Creek as her service project. We also servedthe Lake County Shrine Dinner, where Janile presented the gaveltalk. In February, we held our yearly fund raiser, serving break-fast and lunch at the Mount Dora Art Festival. Although it was-nt as busy as previous years the girls still had loads of fun flip-

ping pancakes and serving burgers & hotdogs. We also initiated

a new Rainbow Pledge and are very pleased to welcome Emily toour group. In March, we went to DeLeon Springs for some yummy

pancakes, canoeing, swimming, burgers and hotdogs. It was areally nice day and we were pleased that Ocala Assembly wasable to join us. Any fact facing us is not asimportant as our attitude to-wards it, for that determinesour success or failure. Theway you think about a factmay defeat you before you

ever do anything about it. You are overcome by thefact because you think you are.

    - Norman Vincent Peale -

How is our attitude today? Have we let thefacts of a matter slip away from us? Do wehave all the facts? These are questions weshould be asking ourselves each time we cast avote or ballot in Lodge. Is it enough that we letthe orators among us do our thinking andsway us by rhetoric? If it is a tough decisionare we going to face it head on or let it slip byand maybe someone else will handle it down

the road. Or worse, do nothing and continuethe way it always has been. We as Masonsare taught that we must think and act for our-selves. We cant let a few nay sayers condemnus to doing the same old thing every time. Ifwe let a fact grow into a huge problem with-out trying to overcome it then we will lose ourway every time. If however, we face that factand come to the realization that we are above itand can defeat it, then we will win in the end.Yes, there is a saying that the facts speak forthemselves but I think that we as men and Ma-sons should also speak for ourselves and refutethe facts sometimes. There is always anotherway of doing things, if we think about it hardenough. The Great Architect gave us a brainand the ability to reason, so why not use thoseabilities and figure out what needs to be done. This goes for our lives as well as in Lodge.Make the hard decisions and stand up for whatis right. The fact that it has always beendone that way, should not limit or sway us.We are better men and can be better Masons bydoing the right thing every time. Dont beovercome by the facts.

Leesburg History 1868-2013Lets go back to yesteryear. Lets go back 100 years to

the first Communication in May of 1913 and what happened on

that day. The Worshipful Master was J. F. Stunkle who served

this Lodge as its Master 15 times! He also served as District

    Deputy Grand Master in 1916.

The Lodge was opened on the evening of May 20th,1913 in the

Master Mason degree with 17 Brothers present. There were

two visiting Brothers, Bro. W.R. Shaw from Cadiz Lodge No.

121, Cadiz, KY and Bro. C.J. Johnson from Parrish Lodge No.

162, Parrish, FL. One of the communications read at this meet-

ing was an invitation from Bushnell Lodge 30, to attend the lay-

ing of the cornerstone for the new Court House. Also through

courtesy of Hillsborough Lodge No. 25, of Tampa, FL, Fellow

craft bro. J.S. McCawley was raised to the sublime degree of

Master mason. There was one petition read, fee ($10) accepted and

referred to committee. They had one petition for affiliation by

demit, from Monroe Lodge 244, Monroe, NC .

The Lodge was stepped down to EA from Master Ma-

son and they had two EA Brothers return their proficiencies.

The Lodge was closed in the EA degree and a Lodge of Master

Masons opened. The Lodge balloted on accepting the Brothers

proficiency and allowing them to advance. They then stepped

back down to the FC degree and proceeded to pass the two

brothers to Fellow Craft. The Lodge received one Brother into

the Lodge to return his FC proficiency which he did satisfacto-

rily. The Lodge of FC was then closed and a Lodge of Master

Masons was opened. A ballot was spread on whether to accept

the proficiency of the FC Brother. It being clear he was elected

to be advanced to the Sublime degree of Master Mason.

The Treasurers report was given and there was $204.06cash on hand.Rent from NYR Store Feb, Mar. Apr $60.00MM degree from brother McCawley 10.00Dues J.F, Stunkle 3.00Dues J.S. McCawley 3.00Application Fee 10.00

    Plastic Safety

In todays society debit cards, bank cards andcredit cards are a way of life. We sometimes don'tthink of how these convenient tools can put our livesand identity in danger. Here are a few tips in hopesof helping you becoming more secure with yourplastic finances.

Most people don't think of what the simpleact of signing the back of your plastic card can do.Give the card number out only to those who actuallyneed to have it (not friends and family members). You would not believe the family members, who wethought of as trustworthy, only to find out theybought a new T.V. or dress with your card. Checkyour monthly statement(s) over with a fine toothcomb. Call in any unknown purchases right away!Dont leave your card payments in your roadside

mailboxes. People will go through them. The bestplace to drop off your mail payments is inside thepost office itself, not even the drop box outside issafe (even there it can be a source for identity theft).

When using your card numbers on-line (orthe internet) it is a good habit to use only trustedsites. Also look at the website URL (i.e.: http://www.example.com/) and see if there is a little mas-ter lock in the corner on either side of the URL. Thismaster lock should be in the locked position. Thismeans this site is a secure link and making purchasesshould be safe. If the lock is un-locked then the link

is unsecure and should NOT be used to place yourorder. Make sure to read the terms and conditions sothat added charges or added monthly charges are notadded to your order. After you order on the com-puter it is a good idea to delete your computer cook-ies and passwords. These can be copied by hackersif you go into a wrong site or an infected site, youmay never know if the site is compromised.

We are told to sign the backs of our creditand debit cards and instructed by cashiers. Did youknow that if your card is used or stolen without your

knowledge and the current user purchases items withyour copied signature (from the back of the card),you could still be held liable and responsible forthose fraudulent purchases. Something to thinkabout... Instead write, "CHECK ID" on the back ofyour cards. All cashiers are in fact supposed to checkyour signature and ID before using your card forpurchases so don't get upset but be happy that theyare doing their job in stopping ID theft.

Most people dont realize, but if you use

your debit card as a debit card and type in your Per-sonal Identification Number (PIN) in some cases thecashier can copy this and use it (PIN may show upon their computer). Also when using your debit cardas debit your purchases are never insured by the

cards company or bank. Most banks will insure yourpurchases if you use your debit card as a credit card. The cashier can not copy this information unlessthey use a carbon copy which in this day and age isalmost nonexistent. If they do use a carbon copy askfor it and you shred it. That way it can not be copied.

Another good habit to get into is to make aphoto copy of your cards front and back and placethis information in a file cabinet or safe. I also do thesame with all my personal IDs. This way you have

the card number and 1-800 numbers to call in case

your card(s) are lost or stolen. If your card(s) aregone and you call for a replacement card(s) ask for adifferent card number. Doing this helps in securingyour accounts. The number will be disabled onceyou call in for a different numbered card but still askthe question; will my old card(s) be disabled now? Some cards (credit or debit) have an insurance tocover the cost of lost and stolen cards if they haveactivity on them. You should ask for this! Somecards come with it but most don't! One more thing Ido is take one or two cards with me when I go out

and I leave the others behind in my safe that way ifmy wallet is stolen I still have a source of financeswhich can be used. If you carry everything and loseit, then all of your finances are gone until your re-placements come in which can be a few days to afew weeks.

One can never be too safe but you have to beor you could be taken advantage of. Again, if younotice charges which you did not make, call yourcard company or bank right away!
