LEED LEADERSHIP IN ENERGY AND

ENVIRONMENT DESIGN

What Is LEED?

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is a third-party certification program for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings. In Canada, the LEED program is administered by the Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC), which has as its vision statement: “A transformed built environment leading to a sustainable future”. Bay Side Home has been designed and constructed to meet the LEED standard. At present the new addition to Bay Side Home is undergoing the review process for LEED certification.

Why LEED?

LEED is a holistic approach to sustainability by recognizing performance in five key areas of human and environmental health which include sustainable site development, water efficiency, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality. In designing and constructing the new addition to Bay Side Home a healthier, cleaner and more cost efficient environment is created for residents, staff, families, volunteers and all who visit. This is in keeping with Bay Side Home’s mission statement.

How the addition to Bay Side Home is LEED Friendly?

- Eco-friendly paper towel and 100 % recycled toilet paper- Eco-friendly laundry detergents.- Compost, recycle, and garbage bins.- Heat recovery system.- Signs by windows to keep shut to save on heat consumption.- Water coolers to cut down on bottled water.- Signs by most lights to keep off when not in use.- Sedimentation control system during construction to preserve topsoil.- Energy efficient light bulbs.

How to Improve

- Turn off all lights when not in use.- Bike to work and use the bike racks provided to store bikes.- Carpool to work to cut down on exhaust output.- Make sure compost bins are available everywhere.- Make sure to put garbage, recyclables, and compost in appropriate bins.- Email families schedules to prevent paper usage.

Friendly Bay Side Home!

WHY IS IT GOOD TO BE LEED?

Being LEED is important for the community to keep up a healthy living style and preserve our community in the best way possible. LEED is the next step in improving the living styles of everyone.

BENEFITS

• Improves air quality which reduces fatigue, allergies, and respiratory problems.

• LEED certified buildings, on average, use 25-50% less electricity, 40% less water, and 70% less solid waste than non LEED friendly facilities.

• LEED buildings reduce green house gas emissions by up to 35%.

MISSION STATEMENT

We believe that each resident of Bay Side Home is a valuable member of our community.

We believe it is our mission to know and treat each member/resident as an individual.

We will assist each member/resident in reaching their fullest potential.
