Lee County and the City of Cape Coral prove to be gracious hosts for Florida Senior Games The 2006 Florida Senior Games State Championships, held for the first of three years in Lee County and the City of Cape Coral, attracted 2,106 athletes over the age of 50 to compete in 22 sports and events. The 2006 Games marked the 15th Anniversary of the Florida Senior Games State Championships. With the new location in Southwest Florida, the area provided a refreshing look for many different events. The Estero Community Center hosted events on five of the nine days of competition as well as the Games Headquarters for the Florida Sports Foundation staff. The Community Center held its Grand Opening on November 18 with a 5K Road Race, just ten days before the FSF staff arrived. Other newer Lee County and Cape Coral venues hosting large participation sports included Ida Baker High School for Track & Field and the Florida Gulf Coast University Swimming Pool and Tennis Courts. The 2006 Games were a qualifier for the 2007 National Senior Games, to be held in late June and early July in Louisville, Kentucky. In the last three National Senior Games competition, held every other year, Florida athletes have flocked to test their skills against senior athletes from around the country. In 2001, a total of 318 Florida athletes combined to win 144 medals in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Over 500 Floridians traveled to Hampton Roads, Virginia to compete in the 2003 National Senior Games and won 164 medals. In 2005, more than 400 senior athletes from Florida earned 193 individual medals and two team medals at the National Senior Games, held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Qualifying events for the 2007 Florida Senior Games State Championships begin in January, 2007 and con-tinue throughout the year. Senior athletes can choose from 21 local qualifying events throughout the state from January through November. The 2007 State Championships will be held December 1-9, 2007, for the second of three years, in Lee County and the City of Cape Coral. A listing of 2007 qualifiers and complete results from the 2006 Games can be found at www.flasports.com. In the 5K Race, Alfredo Rosado, of Lehigh Acres, sprinted out to an early lead at Rotary Park in Cape Coral and held the lead to be the top overall finisher with a time of 19:47, the only runner to break the 20 minute mark. He finished 35 seconds ahead of the second over-all finisher, Dave Hoock, of Ponte Vedra Beach. It was the 12th consecutive age group road race win for Rosado (pictured at right) in his age group over the last two years. “I let my white beard grow long for the race,” he said following the race. “So everyone would say look at that little old man running so well.” Rosado, who won the gold medal in the 60-64 age group in his first Florida Senior Games State Championships competition, works as a citrus production supervisor in Lehigh Acres. The top overall female finisher was Lakeland’s Dee Dean who turned in a time of 24:05 to win the 60-64 age group gold medal. She finished nine seconds ahead of the silver medal winner in the age group, Cheryl Klinzing, of Summerfield, with a time of 24:14. Just by finishing the race, Rosalie Myers, of Tallahassee, established a record for the 85-89 age group with her time of 50:42. Myers, competed in both the 5K Road Race and 5K Race Walk with her daughter, Jacque, who won medals in the 50-54 age group. Arda Perkins, of Bradenton, who is legally blind, established a record in the 95-99 age group with her time of 1:26:32. Bowler achieves perfection at Galaxy Lanes Jerry Brunette, of Naples, rolled the first 300 game on record in the history of the Florida Senior Games State Championships in men’s doubles competition. Brunette’s 12-strike performance came in the first of his three games with partner Sam Ardillo, of Clearwater. Brunette and Ardillo (pictured below, Brunette right) won the gold medal in the 65-69 age group with a combined three game score of 1392 to set a new age group and overall men’s double re-cord, surpassing the previous record by two pins. Brunette had a three-game score of 750 and

Ardillo rolled a 642. It was Brunette’s 12th sanctioned perfect game in his long bowl-ing career dating back to his youth. He and Ardillo have been bowling partners for 40 years dating back their early years in Rochester, New York. Christine Srock of Pinellas Park, was one of two bowlers to win medals in all three events of the competition. Srock rolled a 596 three-game total to set the new mark women’s singles mark in the 50-54 age group. Her scored topped the previous mark set in 1998 by five pins. She teamed with Mary Poindexter, of St.

Petersburg, for a score of 1068 and win the women’s doubles gold medal and teamed with Sam Ardillo, of Clearwater, for a 1268 in the mixed doubles competition. Florida Senior Games Swimming records continue to be broken Each year, Florida Senior Games swimming gets more competitive. Swimmers post better times, produce closer finishes and records fall by the wayside. Over the two days of events at the Florida Gulf Coast University swimming pool, a total of 57 records were shattered. The most impressive record to be broken in 2006 came in the Women’s 200-yard Backstroke when Patrice Hirr, of The Villages, finished with a time of 3:09.38, breaking the previous 55-59 age group record by more than 50 seconds. Susan Schuerman, of The Villages, swam a 3:59.66 in 2002. Other impressive performances included Nathan Leech, of The Villages, who broke four re-cords in the 55-59 age group and the 2005 Florida Senior Games State Championships Fe-male Athlete of the Year, Patricia Sargeant, who broke three records in the 50-54 age group. In setting the combined seven new marks, Leech and Sargeant broke their own Florida Senior Games State Championships records set in previous years. Pickleball duo wins big In Florida Senior Games State Championships Pickleball competition, two names are synony-mous with gold medals. Deb Harrison and Rosemarie Pietromonaco, of The Villages, (pictured below, Harrison left) each have over 20 State Championships wins in singles, doubles and mixed doubles. In the women’s singles 60-64 age group, Pietromonaco has won three of the four gold medals since the sport be-gan in the Florida Senior Games State Championships in 2003. In the three pickleball events, she has put together a 23-6 match record for a 79% winning percentage. In the mixed doubles Pickleball competition, Deb Harrison and Bill Freeman won their second consecutive gold medal in the 55-59 age group. Harrison has now been a member of the gold medal winning team in the 55-59 age group for the third consecutive year. Since 2004, her mixed doubles record is 11-0 and in all three events she has compiled a 21-2 match record for a 91% winning percentage. Beware the Aces The Clearwater Aces Volleyball team won its third consecutive 65-69 age group gold medal in 2006 and pushed the team’s individual game record to 17-1 since 2004. Members of the Tampa Bay area squad, who have played on the last two gold medal winning teams include Walter Deal, Charles Collett, Tim Weldon, Shan Hise, Wayne Flora, Darrell Morken, Jim Schoedler and Jim Mills. Walter Deal was also plays on the Clearwater Aces gold medal winning basketball team which has won seven consecutive gold medals in the 60-64 and 65-69 age groups since 1999. Medalists advance through large brackets to win Table Tennis gold medals The lone table tennis player among the 96 competitors to win medals in all three events was Ocala’s Kyoko Strom, who won gold in the singles and women’s doubles 60-64 division and the 55-59 age group of the mixed doubles competition. She teamed with Patricia Hildebrand, of Orlando, in women’s doubles and Alan Millett, of Summerfield, in Mixed Doubles.

Frank Hanley, of Naples, and Werner Stollenmeier, of Cape Coral, each won their men’s sin-gles divisions and teamed together to win the gold medal in the men’s doubles 50-54 age group. Hanley defeated four opponents to win the men’s singles 60-64 age group and Stollen-meier beat three singles opponents to win the 50-54 age group. In the 65-69 men’s singles age group, the largest bracket of the day with 16 players, Martin Sundel, of Cooper City won five matches to win the gold medal. Sadako Tobias, of Ocala, advanced through the loser’s bracket to win the women’s singles 70-74 age group. She lost a second-round match to Margo Lindsay, of Clearwater, and won three matches to get back to the championship round. She defeated Lindsay, a gold medal winner in three of the last four years, twice to win her first gold medal in Florida Senior Games State Championships singles play. Villages golfer enjoys record-setting day in Lehigh Acres Carla Stevenson, of The Villages, tied an all-time low women ‘s score at Admiral Lehigh Golf Resort in Lehigh Acres with a 72. She now shares the Florida Senior Games State Champion-ships record with Janet Brown, of Lakeland, who shot her 72 in 2004. Stevenson’s score was the low score of the 219 men’s and women’s golfers on the 4,971 yard course.

Playing in the 65-59 age group for the first time, her score also set a new age group record besting the previous mark, set in 1998 by Mar-guerite Batton, of Sarasota, by seven strokes. Stevenson (pictured at left) shot a 37 on the front nine and a 35 on the back nine. She birdied three holes on the back nine and hit par on five holes with one bogey on the 18th hole. “I putted well today,” said Stevenson, who has been playing golf since she was 13. “I only had one three putt all day.” Since her debut in the Florida Senior Games State Championships in 2002, Stevenson has won two gold, two silver and a bronze medal. Her scores have dropped each year since 2002 when she won a sil-

ver medal with a 91. She shot an 82 in 2003 to win bronze, an 80 in 2004 to win a silver medal and won her first gold medal in 2005 with a 77. This year was her first year competing in the 65-69 age group. Wind not a deterrent for Senior Games cyclists Strong winds challenged over 100 cyclists in the 5 and 10K Time Trials in Cape Coral, but top riders reached speeds of 30 miles per hour on the homestretch with the wind at their backs. Patrick Genova, of Parkland, won the 50-54 age group gold medal with the fastest 5K time of the day, a 7:28.242. He beat Larry Lefferts, of Wilton Manors, who has posted the fastest 5K time the last three years, by more than second. Lefferts’ time of 7:29.960 took the gold medal in the 55-59 age group. Sue Pavlat, of Englewood, had the fastest women’s 5K time with a 9:19.022 to win the gold medal in the 50-54 age group. In the 10K Time Trials, Jorge Vargas, of Miami, had the fastest ride with a 14:39.809, winning the gold medal in the 50-54 age group. He topped Lefferts by nearly 15 seconds for the top overall men’s time. Carol Jean Vosburgh, of Treasure Island, turned in the quickest women’s time in the 10K with a ride of 18:38.769 to win the 60-64 age group gold medal.

In the second half of the Florida Senior Games Cycling, Dixie Devry, of Boynton Beach, and Raymond Putnam, of Fort Myers, won gold medals in the 20K and 40K to complete gold medal sweeps of all four events. Both won gold medals in their age groups in the 5K and 10K Time Trials on Tuesday. Devry also accomplished the feat at the 2005 Games, giving her eight cy-cling gold medals in the last two years. 76 riders competed in the 20K Road Race and 49 rode the 40K course. Six days of Tennis sees plenty of action at Florida Gulf Coast University The most experienced athlete of the 2006 Florida Senior Games State Championships won a gold medal in the 95-99 age group as 97-year old Roger Gentilhomme, of Dunedin, took to the tennis courts at Florida Gulf Coast University. As the only participant in the age group he won the gold even though was on the losing end of his match against 85-year old Irving Newman, of Sarasota. Gentilhomme, who took up tennis in 1976 after retiring, kept the match close with overhand serves and chasing Newman’s shots around the court. He dropped several shots in front of Newman that he couldn’t reach in time for points. The second game was tied at 4-4 before Newman came away with the win. His match and gold medal also made him a qualifier for the 2007 National Senior Games next summer. It will be his fifth trip to the National Senior Games having competed in 1995, 1999, 2001 and 2003. Gentil-homme also won gold medals in the men’s singles Bowling competition and Shuffleboard singles The final day of tennis competition saw two Punta Gorda couples square off for the mixed doubles gold medal in the 60-64 age group. Con-stance & Gary Leips, of Punta Gorda, defeated Linda & Jay Huber for their first mixed doubles championship. The Huber’s were seemingly in control of the match winning the first set 6-2 and were tied at 4-4 in the second set before before Jay pulled a muscle in his leg forcing the duo to retire. Linda admitted before the match that the two couples “play often in Punta Gorda with the Leips’ win-ning 90% of the time.” “I was playing very well and Jay was playing out of his gourd,” she said after the match. The Huber’s won a mixed doubles gold medal in the 2003 Games. Both Constance and Gary won medals in 60-64 doubles competition as she teamed with Linda Huber for the women’s doubles gold medal and Gary won a bronze in the men’s doubles with Robert Chene. Well into his 80’s, Andy McGuffin continues to sink free throws Another year of Basketball Shooting, another gold medal for Andy McGuffin, of Umatilla, who continued his mastery of the free throw competition winning hitting 29 of 30 shots to win the gold medal in the 80-84 age group.

In 10 Florida Senior Games State Championships competitions since 1995, McGuffin (pictured at right) has hit 282 of 300 free throws for a 94% accuracy mark. By also winning the Spot Field Goal Shooting and Time Field Goal Shooting, he swept all three medals for the 10th time since 1994. McGuffin, the 2005 Florida Senior Games Male Athlete of the Year, was part of the torch light-ing ceremony and was presented with his award at the Celebration of Athletes at City of Palms Park. Charles Ripstra, of Lake Wales, and Jay Whelchel, of Bradenton, also swept gold medals in all three categories. Ripstra hit 28 of 30 free throws, scored 14 of the possible 15 points in spot field goal shooting and totaled 102 points in timed free throw shooting of the 50-54 age group. Whelchel, competing in the 65-69 age group, hit 27 of 30 free throws, connected on 14 of 15 points in spot field goal shooting and compiled 110 points in timed field goal shooting. Whelchel was also a member of the silver-medal winning Sunshine Beach 65-69 basketball team. Nearly 200 points recorded at Florida Senior Games Basketball In the highest scoring game of Florida Senior Games State Championships basketball compe-tition history, the Phantoms, of St. Petersburg, defeated the Fossils, of Oviedo, 105-80. The Phantoms, who play in the 55-59 age group and the Fossils, in the 60-64 age group, combined for 185 points in 24 minutes of play which featured a running clock until the final two minutes of each 12 minute half. All eight players in the game, four from each team, scored 15 points or more with David White of the Phantoms leading all scorers with 38 points. His teammate Mike Phelps scored added 32 while John Salter led the Fossils with 28 points. “Not much defense in that game,” commented Mike Scaringe, of the Phantoms, as he walked off the court. Not too many missed shots either considering the amount of time elapsed for both teams to score 185 points. Who’s the fastest? When the running events of the Track & Field meet took center stage, Cleveland Smith, of Jacksonville, proved to be fastest competitor of the day winning the gold medal in the 100 and 200 meter dashes. He ran a time of 12.57 in the 100 meter dash and 25.46 in the 200 meter in the 55-59 age group, edging Tampa’s Bobby Terrell by less than a second in both races. In the Field events 16 age group records fell in five events. Robert Hume, of Middleburg, broke his own record in the 55-59 age group discus throw by more than four feet, with a toss of 146 feet, 11 inches. He set the previous mark last year with a throw of 142 feet, five inches. Ethel Lehmann, of Largo, established new 75-79 age group records in the high jump, long jump and discus throw. In the high jump and long jump, she broke her own records. She now holds 13 records in three different age groups, dating back to 1997 when she set the high jump mark in the 65-69 age group.

In the 60-64 age group javelin throw competition, Martin Menkin, of Winter Park, and James Ulrich, of Punta Gorda, battled it out for the gold medal. Menkin’s throw of 145-00 beat Ulrich by three feet and set a new record for age group. His throw bested a record held for 15 years, set in 1993 by Rudy Enders, of Merritt Island, by one foot. Jacque Myers and her mother, Rosalie, of Talla-hassee, were busy the track & field meet. Jacque (right in picture) turned in the fastest women’s time in the 100 and 200 meter dashes with a 15.01 in the 100 and 35.75 in the 200. She com-peted in seven events in the 50-54 age group over the two-day meet. Rosalie competed in six track & field events in the 85-89 age group. Both also participated in the 5K Road Race and Race Walk. Clermont race walker breaks records An all time best performance by Sandra DeNoon, of Clermont highlighted the 1500 meter race walk competition. Her time of 8:20.93 topped the previous best of June Marie Provost, of Naples in 1994, by 12 seconds. Her time also beat her own record in the 50-54 age group, a time of 8:52.39, set last year. Her 1500 meter performance followed up a record-setting performance in the 5K Race Walk two days earlier. DeNoon crossed the finish line with a time of 30:32.59 to set a new mark in the 50-54 age group. Her 2006 5K time was more than two minutes faster than her gold medal winning time of 32:57 in 2005. She also shaved 32 seconds off of her 1500 meter time from 2005. Throwing some ringers Wayne Duesenbery, of North Fort Myers, won the Horseshoes 65-69 age group, the largest of the competition, to win a gold medal with an 8-2 game record. Robert Farnsworth, of Punta Gorda, was undefeated in seven matches and won the gold medal in the 75-79 age group. Rosalie Judy, of North Fort Myers, had the highest ringer percentage of the day, tossing ringers on 58% of her throws in four matches. She won the gold medal in the 70-74 age group, defeating Dorothy (Babe) Hood, of The Villages, who had won gold medals in four of the last five years.
