LED Lighting for Worship

LED Lighting for Worship2 LED Lighting for Worship 3

Community worship takes many forms. Church services and productions can be traditional or contemporary, formal or conversational, conservative or theatrical.

Regardless of your approach to worship, you need a lighting style that supports your worship style. Effective lighting focuses attention, creates appropriate mood and atmosphere, communicates meaning, and engages the audience.

Due to continuing advances in light output, light quality, and energy efficiency, LED lighting fixtures can now brilliantly and cost-effectively support virtually all worship lighting applications.

Industry-leading LED lighting solutions from Philips Color Kinetics are ideal for most church production and architectural lighting designs, both indoors and outdoors.

From uniform white-light LED cove lights, wash lights, and floodlights to multi-channel stage lights offering full-color illumination and extraordinary color-changing effects, Philips Color Kinetics LED lighting solutions deliver intense, high-quality light while maximizing energy savings and ease of use.

Boston’s Old North Church replaced its existing click-strip incandescent lighting with 130 eW Cove Powercore units, installed along interior niches of the church’s upper gallery. the eW® Cove Powercore fixtures cast a warm glow along the church’s niches, while accentuating the historic arches and moldings.

Not only do the LED fixtures consume one-sixth the energy of the previous incandescent system (40 watts per eight-foot run, versus 240 watts), they offer a projected source lifetime of 50,000 hours — up to 25 times longer than the previous light sources. Installing eW Cove Powercore LED fixtures in place of the incandescent sources has cut energy consumption in Old North Church by nearly 85%.

The fixtures’ low profile and simple line-power installation, courtesy of patented Powercore® technology, enable them to fit in narrow alcoves and niches where traditional light sources that require ballasts, additional power supplies, and other equipment can not. For further efficiency and ease of use, the church can smoothly dim the eW Cove Powercore fixtures with commercially available ELV-type dimmers.

Intense, energy-efficient LED white lightLighting designers have sometimes avoided specifying LED lighting solutions because of concerns about light output and light quality, especially in white-light applications. Today, Philips Color Kinetics offers white-light LED fixtures that meet or exceed the light output and color uniformity of comparable incandescent and fluorescent fixtures.

eW Cove MX Powercore, the most powerful offering in the new line of linear white-light LED lighting fixtures from Philips Color Kinetics, produces warm, neutral, or cool white light at up to 632 lumens per foot.

With efficacy of up to 53.1 lm / W, long useful life, and low- or no-maintenance operation, eW Cove MX Powercore offers lower first and total cost than dimmable T5HO and 2-lamp T8 strip lights in cove and accent lighting applications.

The affordable eW Cove QLX Powercore produces up to 272 lumens per foot, replacing comparable T8 and T12 fluorescent sources with a three-year payback, and comparable halogen and xenon sources with a one-year payback.

Selected fixtures are energy star qualified, improving your energy star for Congregations performance score even more effectively than CFLs with similar light output.

White-light LED lighting fixtures for interior illumination can now achieve unprecedented levels of color quality and color uniformity. The line of new linear white-light LED fixtures from Philips Color Kinetics exceeds the recognized (ANSI) standards for color quality to guarantee uniformity of hue and color temperature. These fixtures offer consistent, reliable color temperature, and they are in widespread use in television studios where white-balancing for still and video photography is crucial.

Philips Color Kinetics offers a complete line of high-output, full-color LED wash lights, spotlights, and floodlights for dynamic, digitally controllable theatrical and presentation lighting. These energy-efficient LED lighting fixtures natively produce millions of colors of intense light for contemporary services calling for strong color choices, variations in intensity, video, and automated lighting effects.

Dynamic. Creative. Theatrical.

Philips Color Kinetics color-changing LED lighting fixtures have been a mainstay of theatrical and stage lighting systems for years. Theater and stage lighting professionals depend on Philips Color Kinetics for industry-leading light output, ease of installation, and precision of control. Fixtures that feature patented Powercore technology dramatically simplify installation and lower total system cost by merging line voltage and control data and delivering them to fixtures over a single standard cable.

ColorBlast® TRX and ColorBlaze® TRX, innovative RGBAW LED stage lights new from Philips Color Kinetics, incorporate channels of red, green, blue, amber, and white LED sources to achieve superior color precision and a dramatically expanded color palette. These fixtures add intense yellows, high-quality whites, and a range of subtle pastel colors to the millions of saturated colors achievable with standard RGB lighting fixtures.

A range of form factors and output levels can support places of worship of any size, from intimate community churches to massive megachurches. Small-format ColorBurst® Compact Powercore architectural fixtures can project color-changing beams of light of over 400 lumens for precise highlighting and spotlighting. At the other end of the spectrum, ColorReachTM Powercore architectural floodlights offer full-color light output of over 5,000 lumens and light projection of over 500 feet — powerful enough to paint soaring expanses with intensely saturated color.

Philips Color Kinetics offers a full line of DMX- and Ethernet-based controllers suitable for lighting systems of any size, from small installations consisting of a few color-changing lights to massive installations requiring individual control of tens of thousands of LED nodes.

Visible from both land and sea, the two-hundred-year-old steeple atop the First Baptist Church serves as a landmark in the Massachusetts coastal community of Beverly. The church’s historic but aging steeple was renovated in 2008. The restoration plan included a new lighting design to fully illuminate the steeple’s upper half while minimizing maintenance and energy consumption.

Before the renovation, the steeple used eight 150-watt incandescent floodlights to illuminate the top of the spire from dusk until dawn.

Due to the fixtures’ hard-to-access location, maintenance was problematic. The lamps could be replaced only when a steeplejack was hired to paint the steeple. The incandescent floodlights had a rated lifetime of around 4,000 hours — a little over two years at eight hours of use per day. But since the church could afford a steeplejack only every seven or eight years, the fixtures would always burn out long before they could be replaced, leaving the steeple in the dark for years.

The design team specified replacement light sources that would closely match the color temperature of the former incandescent sources, require little or no maintenance, and last at least until the next painting of the steeple.

Fourteen eW Blast Powercore fixtures replaced the incandescent fixtures along the spire’s bottom ledge. These low-maintenance fixtures consume 58% less energy, and offer useful light for 50,000 hours of operation or more — over 17 years at eight hours of use per day. Overall, the new LED lighting system yields a 70% total reduction in cost.

Additional LED lighting illuminates the formerly dark lower sections of the steeple. Directly below the spire, eight 4 ft eW Graze Powercore wall-washing fixtures bathe the steeple’s eight wood shutters with uniform white light. Further down, four eW Graze Powercore fixtures illuminate the four large windows. These fixtures consume an additional 720 watts only — less energy than a typical microwave oven.

The newly renovated steeple is now illuminated from dusk until 1 a.m. every day, with no extended outages. Reliable, energy-efficient, and virtually maintenance-free LED lighting benefits both the church and the city of Beverly, for which the steeple serves as a stunning focal point by night as well as by day.

Let there be lightBrilliantly and effectively illuminating the exterior of your place of worship can be as important as lighting its interior, especially where the architecture is historic or iconic. Outdoor-rated LED flood and wash lights from Philips Color Kinetics can dramatically highlight key architectural features, such as façades and steeples, with intense white or colored light.

Because they hardly ever need to be serviced or replaced, exterior architectural LED lighting fixtures from Philips Color Kinetics allow the use of white lighting in spaces where lamp maintenance may be impossible.

eW Blast Powercore, eW Burst Powercore, eW Reach Powercore and other outdoor-rated LED lighting fixtures can effectively illuminate building features from positions accessible only by means of scaffolding or special lifts.

Fixtures in a variety of form factors support exterior wall washing, wall grazing, and spotlighting applications. To richly and uniformly illuminate the expansive surfaces and vertical architectural features common to many houses of worship, eW Reach Powercore high-performance floodlights offer light output of up to 11,392 lumens and light projection of over 800 feet.

Because LED lighting fixtures are inherently directional, they deliver light only to areas where light is needed, avoiding over-illumination and light pollution.

For economic, demographic, and evangelical reasons, portable and multi-site churches are rapidly increasing in popularity. Portable churches meet in spaces as diverse as theaters, hotel ballrooms, community centers, and school gyms. Many of these meeting places offer insufficient lighting systems, or no lighting system at all.

Professional-grade touring and rental LED lighting solutions from Philips Color Kinetics allow portable churches to purchase, configure, and use their own custom lighting systems in multiple locations. Because Philips Color Kinetics controllers are digital and portable, like the lighting fixtures themselves, churches can easily and flawlessly reproduce lighting designs and effects, guaranteeing congregants a consistent and engaging experience regardless of location.

The Reach TR and Blast TR family of white and color-changing LED wash lights and floodlights from Philips

Color Kinetics are designed specifically to withstand taxing temporary and rental use involving frequent setup and teardown. These fixtures have been perfected through years of successful service in the entertainment industry.

Fixtures are easily programmable to illuminate seasonal events and special productions, such as weddings, Christmas pageants, and Purim celebrations. Available theatrical accessories, including top hats, barndoors, and egg crate louvers, make these rugged fixtures ideal for lighting scenes designed for audience viewing.

Professional. Consistent. Portable.

In 2006, lighting designers were hired to create a lighting scheme for the 20th anniversary gala for the Orange County Performing Arts Center and the opening of its world-class Segerstrom Concert Hall. The designers selected touring and rental LED lighting fixtures from Philips Color Kinetics, including ColorBlaze, which offer easy setup and configuration along with versatile full-color light output.

The lighting scheme incorporated both direct-view video elements and wall-washing effects. The direct-view lighting display, mounted in vertical arrays against the venue’s back wall, included cascading waterfall imagery and a spectacular sunset effect.

The design called for more than 45 ColorBlaze 72 fixtures along the walls of the tent in which the gala was held. These fixtures were used to project bold, saturated colors against the white interior surfaces of the tent, as well as digital video content that suggested flowing movements to coincide with the direct-view display.

The entire project required only 30 days from concept to completion. Because of the fixtures’ ease of configuration and installation, the lighting setup itself was done virtually overnight.

offer tunable color temperatures ranging from warm through neutral to cool, affording unprecedented flexibility in white-balancing, color-correcting, and daylight harvesting from a single system while eliminating the need for dichroic filters and other special equipment.

A variety of form factors and light distribution profiles can produce both large washes of light at low throw distances (as preferred by television studios) and intense long-throw illumination for spacious houses of worship that must successfully function as live venues.

Expanded RGBAW color ranges on some fixtures, exceptional color mixing and precision,

and 16-bit control deliver smooth fades and color transitions that look great on video.

Our LED lighting solutions offer additional advantages over conventional broadcast lights. They have no moving parts, so they create no mechanical noise on color transitions, as with some traditional moving lights. They consume significantly less energy than non-LED sources, offer usable light for tens of thousands of hours with negligible color-shifting over time, and produce cool beams of light that minimize the need for air conditioning — especially important in regions with high outdoor temperatures for a significant part of the year.

Broadcast lighting professionals sometimes hesitate to use LED lighting for broadcast and video due to problems with on-camera flicker and insufficient intensity. Unlike fixtures from other manufacturers, LED lighting fixtures from Philips Color Kinetics are flicker-free at most camera frame rates, and can be digitally adjusted for virtually any broadcast situation. Philips Color Kinetics LED lighting solutions are successfully installed and used in dozens of broadcast applications today, including the Canadian Broadcast Corporation newsroom (facing page), the set of the popular UK entertainment show The X Factor, and the

studios of Saigon Entertainment Television in California (above).

With ongoing advances in LED source quality, our LED lighting fixtures now rival the light output of conventional lighting fixtures.

Our white-light LED lighting fixtures exceed industry-standard tolerances for CCT and Duv (hue), guaranteeing uniformity of light output across fixtures, across manufacturing runs, and over time, and avoiding inconsistencies that can be especially obtrusive on video.

With more multi-site churches, remote campuses, and virtual ministries appearing every year, broadcast and video are becoming ever more popular as a means for reaching congregants and extending worship. Lighting for broadcast and video is very different from live site lighting, and has evolved its own specialized techniques and systems. LED lighting solutions from Philips Color Kinetics equal and in many cases exceed the performance of specialized lighting fixtures for broadcast.

Intelligent white light Intelligent white-light LED lighting fixtures from Philips Color Kinetics provide controllable white light in color temperatures ranging from warm through neutral to cool, allowing you to vary the atmosphere and white point of a space with the push of a button. Unlike conventional light sources, LED lighting fixtures do not color-shift when dimmed.
