The Department of Physics The Department of Physics is committed to
delivering internationally recognized teaching
and research programmes to its students in
Pure and Applied Physics.
At the undergraduate level, we offer a B.Sc. in
Biomedical Technology (special degree) and
Majors in Physics and Electronics. Students
also have the option of pursuing up to two of
four Minors in Applied Physics: Environmental
Physics, Medical Physics & Bioengineering,
Materials Science and Electronics.
Additionally, we offer taught postgraduate
courses leading to a M.Sc. and research based
programmes leading to M.Phil. and Ph.D.
degrees. In 2013, we launched a M.Sc. in
Renewable Energy Technology, and in
September 2016, the M.Sc. in Biomedical
Physics. The primary areas of specialization for
research degrees are in Pure Physics,
Astronomy, and in Applied Physics fields of
Materials Science, Environmental Physics,
Renewable Energy, Medical Physics, and
Electronics.
Research Environmental Physics encompasses research
in Caribbean Climatology, Climate Change &
Impact Assessments, Renewable Energy,
Geophysics, Soil Erosion and Noise Pollution.
The Department of Physics has had a long
history in solar energy. In addition, the Solar
Energy Laboratory has been pivotal in
establishing a photovoltaic demonstration site.
In the past few years, we have extended our
research into wind and geothermal energy.
Our Smart Grid Research Laboratory focuses
on the study of integration challenges of
renewable sources with the electrical grid.
Our focus in Medical Physics research is
currently on Anthropometrics and Ergonomics,
and Radiation Medicine. Our Digital System
Design Laboratory was specifically established
for the design and simulation of Digital Signal
Processing systems for their applications
towards Speech Recognition and
Communication. In addition to the above,
there is also ongoing research in Materials

Science, Quantum Optics, Optoelectronics,
and Astronomy and Astrobiology. Graduate
students who wish to pursue research in the
primary and related research areas will find
willing mentors among faculty, technicians,
and administrative staff members.
Our specialist unit in Electron Microscopy (SEM
and TEM) offers services in collaboration with
the Faculty of Medical Sciences. Apart from
this we have an XRD facility and Electronics
Workshop to support our research initiatives.
Research Possibilities The proximity of the Faculty of Engineering, as
well as the Seismic Research Unit, which are
situated on the St. Augustine Campus, provide
excellent opportunities for rewarding research
in other areas of Physics. Collaboration with
the sister campuses at Cave Hill (Barbados) and
Mona (Jamaica) is encouraged.
