Leathery turtle Dermochelys coriacea (L.) sighting off west Cork
On 30 August 2004, during a cetacean survey conducted on board the R.V. Celtic Explorer, a large leathery turtle Dermochelys coriacea (L.) was noted 70km west of Garnish Bay, Co Cork in location 51? 38' 22" N, 11? 06' 01" W. The animal was actively swimming at the surface and was
estimated to measure 1.8m in length. The species was identified by its large size and the presence of characteristic dorsal ridges rather than overlapping plates on the carapace.
