The Ridings’ Federation of Academies supports the learning and development of over 2,700 young people in Bristol and South Gloucestershire through our two International Academies, Woodlands Primary, Woodlands Nursery and The Ridings’ Federation Sixth Form.

Since the Federation was established in 2009, over £35 million has been invested in new facilities at Winterbourne International Academy and Yate International Academy. This includes some fantastic leisure and learning facilities that are available to the community outside normal curriculum hours.

AChristmasCracker! Experience the satisfaction of making your own Christmas decorations to keep or to give as delightfully personal gifts, made from inexpensive and easily available materials. Share the fun with your family who will also enjoy being shown how to make their own crackers, wreaths, advent calendars and assorted decorations from the traditional “honeycomb” to the opulent “Faberge” bauble and through to zany “glow in the dark” snowflakes! All tools will be supplied. Students are encouraged to bring in their own collections of buttons, beads, decorative papers and personal materials they wish to utilise but additional materials are available from the tutor at a modest cost.

Card-Tastic! This new class will equip you with the skills and creative ideas to make your own greetings cards. No expensive kits necessary as all designs will be made from scratch using materials we all have at home. The course will look at designing, painting, and even “pop up” 3D collages! DrawingForTheTerrified Drawing opens our eyes to the wonders of the world around us. Together, students will rise to the challenge of putting marks on to that scary expanse of white paper. Surprise yourself with what you can create, whether it be still life, sketchbook development or historical perspective. Students may also have an opportunity to look at some 3D clay work. A low-cost kit list will be sent to all students and is required to start drawing on the course.

Dressmaking&TextilesThis course is designed for both beginners and those with limited sewing experience. You will be taught a variety of sewing techniques to complete a range of garments, giving students the opportunity to learn new creative skills with textiles. Students should provide their own fabrics and patterns but advice on these will be given during the first session. Please ask for the kit list when you enrol. The course at WIA runs for 20 weeks, while YIA provides a shorter 12 week option.

Book-KeepingForBeginnersThis ten-week course in book-keeping is a great opportunity for those who run their own business, are looking to apply for a new job, or are looking to learn a new skill. During the course students will learn about cashbooks, bank reconciliations, petty cash, VAT and much more. This course is ideal for complete beginners or anyone who wishes to refresh existing skills. All materials for this course are included but students should bring a calculator and stationery. Computer Aided Design An introduction to CAD, developing skills using 3D modelling software and producing data for manufacture by CAM. The software is of industry standard and adopted by many schools and universities. This course leads to the C&G 2303 and 4353 certificates and is suitable for beginners to CAD or those wanting to extend their skills or gain qualifications. HandAndFootPamperProducts Make your own aromatherapy products to use on your hands and feet, you will make an aromatherapy oil blend, a salt and oil scrub and a natural mask. You will make a natural face mask that you will apply to yourself as well as performing a basic cleanse and exfoliation leaving you with beautifully soft and nourished skin. VTCT Level 3 Award In Tanning Treatments This brand new course at Yate International Academy offers all those aged 16+ an opportunity to gain a Level 3 qualification in this growing field of beauty treatments. Students will need to bring in models for weeks 3 and 4. A kit list is required for the course which we can provide at a reduced cost of £45.60. VTCTCertificateInWomen’sHairdressingThis extensive course is aimed at adults who would like to achieve the recognised Level 2 VTCT qualification.  Successful completion of the course (and receipt of the certificate) will allow learners to buy hairdressing products from wholesalers and be able to work as a self-employed/mobile hairdresser.  Alternatively learners may apply to work in salons.

The contents of the kit (purchased separately online for approximately £165) have been carefully selected to be of suitable quality for professional use. The course will teach how to wash, set and blow-dry hair, moving on to cutting, colouring and perming. Learners will need to provide “clients” at various parts of the course to demonstrate their skills on. SingingForTheTerrifiedDo you sing, but only in the bath? Do you feel you could sing but were told you were “tone deaf”? Join with others in this exciting new class, singing, as a group, songs from the popular and folk traditions, along with a few from the classical repertoire. Lack of musical theory is a positive advantage, while shyness and experience are no handicap – all you need is a sense of humour! Roger is an enthusiastic and encouraging tutor who has sung in choirs since boyhood under many well-known conductors, and has worked with all abilities and ages from eight to 80. Students can choose any of the five week blocks or join us at any stage throughout the programme.
