The Ridings’ Federation of Academies supports the learning and development of over 2,700 young people in Bristol and South Gloucestershire through our two International Academies, Woodlands Primary, Woodlands Nursery and The Ridings’ Federation Sixth Form.

Since the Federation was established in 2009, over £35 million has been invested in new facilities at Winterbourne International Academy and Yate International Academy. This includes some fantastic leisure and learning facilities that are available to the community outside normal curriculum hours.

AChristmasCracker! Experience the satisfaction of making your own Christmas decorations to keep or to give as delightfully personal gifts, made from inexpensive and easily available materials. Share the fun with your family who will also enjoy being shown how to make their own crackers, wreaths, advent calendars and assorted decorations from the traditional “honeycomb” to the opulent “Faberge” bauble and through to zany “glow in the dark” snowflakes! All tools will be supplied. Students are encouraged to bring in their own collections of buttons, beads, decorative papers and personal materials they wish to utilise but additional materials are available from the tutor at a modest cost.

Card-Tastic! This new class will equip you with the skills and creative ideas to make your own greetings cards. DrawingForTheTerrified Drawing opens our eyes to the wonders of the world around us. Together, students will rise to the challenge of putting marks on to that scary expanse of white paper. Surprise yourself with what you can create, whether it be still life, sketchbook development or historical perspective. Students may also have an opportunity to look at some 3D clay work. A low-cost kit list will be sent to all students and is required to start drawing on the course.

Dressmaking&TextilesThis course is designed for both beginners and those with limited sewing experience. You will be taught a variety of sewing techniques to complete a range of garments, giving students the opportunity to learn new creative skills with textiles. Students should provide their own fabrics and patterns but advice on these will be given during the first session. Please ask for the kit list when you enrol. The course at WIA runs for 20 weeks, while YIA provides a shorter 12 week option.

Book-KeepingForBeginnersThis ten-week course in book-keeping is a great opportunity for those who run their own business, are looking to apply for a new job, or are looking to learn a new skill. During the course students will learn about cashbooks, bank reconciliations, petty cash, VAT and much more. This course is ideal for complete beginners or anyone who wishes to refresh existing skills. All materials for this course are included but students should bring a calculator and stationery. Courses run on Tuesdays at Winterbourne International Academy and Thursdays at Yate International Academy for only £80.

Computer Aided Design An introduction to CAD, developing skills using 3D modelling software and producing data for manufacture by CAM. The software is of industry standard and adopted by many schools and universities. This course leads to the C&G 2303 and 4353 certificates and is suitable for beginners to CAD or those wanting to extend their skills or gain qualifications. Many parents also take this course who want to be able to assist their children with their studies.

EmergencyFirstAidAtWork This course is a real must for anyone who needs to know just how to respond in an emergency. The competency of candidates will be evaluated by continuous assessment and multiple choice papers in line with modern day assessment practices. Award winning interactive e-learning designed for the busy food operator or even those who just need to know. HandAndFootPamperProducts Make your own aromatherapy products to use on your hands and feet, you will make an aromatherapy oil blend, a salt and oil scrub and a natural mask. You will use all products on yourself to pamper your hands or feet within the session. Students can then take home the handmade products to continue the pampering experience! Please bring two small towels and two small jars (small jam jars are perfect!). There will be a kit available to purchase on the night for only £10.

IntroductionToBodyMassageOur body massage course will teach students the art of massage and the techniques applied to promote relaxation and relieve tension. All students must be 18+ and will be required to bring along models in week 4 to practice skills. All candidates must be medically fit and willing to both receive and carry out massage techniques. Make-up Techniques This new course will teach you all you need to know about the application of make-up including the use of brushes and shading with eye shadows. Hair, Beauty and Well Being13

NaturalFacialThis course will help students to learn about facial skincare and products. You will make a natural face mask that you will apply to yourself as well as performing a basic cleanse and exfoliation leaving you with beautifully soft and nourished skin. Please do bring along a hand towel and your current skin care products. A kit will be available to purchase for £8 from the tutor on the night.

Perfect Your Manicure Learn how to create a professional long lasting manicure and how to care for your nails and cuticles. You will perform a full manicure on yourself within this session. Seated Massage Learn how to perform a basic seated massage. You will work in pairs within the session and work on the upper back, arms, shoulders, neck and scalp. You will learn basic massage techniques and how to work through clothing (this is a no oil treatment and is performed over clothing). Please bring a small hand towel with you. A kit will be available for purchase on the night for £3.

VTCTLevel3DiplomaInNailTechnology(QCF)This 25-week diploma is aimed at those students who are 18+ who would like to gain a qualification in this subject area. Students will be expected to complete assignment work at home and will be required to carry out a case study to build up a portfolio for assessment. We will look at Health and Safety, Manicure, Personal Health and Wellbeing, Pedicure, Nail Art and Design and much more. A kit list will be issued to all those who enrol at a cost of £250. VTCT Level 3 Award In Tanning Treatments This brand new course at Yate International Academy offers all those aged 16+ an opportunity to gain a Level 3 qualification in this growing field of beauty treatments. VTCTCertificateInWomen’sHairdressingThis extensive course is aimed at adults who would like to achieve the recognised Level 2 VTCT qualification. Successful completion of the course (and receipt of the certificate) will allow learners to buy hairdressing products from wholesalers and be able to work as a self-employed/mobile hairdresser. Alternatively learners may apply to work in salons.

The contents of the kit (purchased separately online for approximately £165) have been carefully selected to be of suitable quality for professional use. The course will teach how to wash, set and blow-dry hair, moving on to cutting, colouring and perming. Learners will need to provide “clients” at various parts of the course to demonstrate their skills on. Learners are expected to wear a black t-shirt with black trousers or skirt and flat closed-toe black shoes. Please contact us for a full-course programme. ImproveYourReading&WritingWould you like to improve your reading and writing skills but are unsure where to start? Maybe you need to increase your vocabulary and learn how words are constructed. Perhaps you need to help with your child’s homework but are unsure how to get started. If so then this new, friendly and flexible course is for you! Students can practise different types of reading for particular tasks and improve on spelling, grammar and punctuation.

ItalianBeginnersThis is a foundation course for complete beginners. Students will learn to communicate and converse in everyday situations e.g. in a restaurant, shopping and getting information (such as, directions). Spanish Improvers Intermediate This course is suitable for students with two years experience of studying language and who already possess a reasonable amount of vocabulary. A follow on course will be offered if numbers allow.

RYA Day Skipper This shore-based course is for the enthusiastic potential sail or power yachtsman. The course covers basic seamanship, navigation, pilotage and meteorology.

VHFRadioOperator–GMDSS/SRCA one-day course in the use of a VHF Radio with Digital Selective Calling (DSC) which replaces the VHF Radio Operators Certificate part of the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS). ASDAN modules are a recognised qualification with each module unit having a value in its own right. Wider Key Skills are fun, unique and above all they are centred around you! All three modular units listed below could be completed within the year and a discount would be offered to students who undertake more than one unit.

SingingForTheTerrifiedDo you sing, but only in the bath? Do you feel you could sing but were told you were “tone deaf”? Join with others in this exciting new class, singing, as a group, songs from the popular and folk traditions, along with a few from the classical repertoire. Lack of musical theory is a positive advantage, while shyness and experience are no handicap – all you need is a sense of humour! Roger is an enthusiastic and encouraging tutor who has sung in choirs since boyhood under many well-known conductors, and has worked with all abilities and ages from eight to 80. Students can choose any of the five week blocks or join us at any stage throughout the programme.
