PATTAN’S MISSION

The mission of the Pennsylvania Training and Technical Assistance Network (PaTTAN) is to support the efforts and initiatives of the Bureau of Special Education, and to build the capacity of local educational

agencies to serve students who receive special education services.

PDE’S COMMITMENT TO LEAST RESTRICTIVE ENVIRONMENT (LRE)

Our goal for each child is to ensure Individualized Education Program (IEP) teams begin with the general education setting with the use of Supplementary Aids and Services

before considering a more restrictive environment.

Distribution of reading skill

THE COMPLEXITIES OF LEARNING TO READ

• Reading is not natural or easy for many children

• Reading depends upon many abilities• Once we understand how a good reader reads, we can then understand reading failure and how to prevent it

Page 6: Learning the Ropes CCSD Title I

SCIENCE VS MYTHOLOGY OR PHILOSOPHYSeveral thousand studies have reached consensus on how best to teach reading

Strong early-intervention programs minimize the number of children who will fall behind

“Johnny is just a late bloomer” is a myth!We can identify those who struggle in Kindergarten and intervene

Rhizomes are knobby underground stems that are known for their pungent and flavorful flesh. The rhizome family includes ginger, turmeric and galangal among a few other, lesser known rhizomes. Rhizomes are not a significant source of any nutrients – most especially because they are rarely eaten in great enough quantities to constitute a serving. Ginger is a tropical Asian herb that is known for its spicy aromatic roots. In ancient India, ginger was believed to spiritually cleanse the body.

THE ROPES OF READING Any strand within the “rope” can cause a student to struggle

Reading is complex; there is no one program or one activity that can address all issues

Some students need 2 exposures to learn, some need 20, but some need more and more
