CERTIF IED ACCOUNTING TECHNICIAN
The structure of the current CAT scheme, first examined in
June 2004, is built upon the ANTO Occupational Standards
in Accounting.
Introductory and Intermediate Level papers are examined by a
two-hour computer based examination or a written exam of the
same duration. All Advanced papers are three-hour written exams
(except for Paper 5, which is a two-hour written exam).
Exam papers for the Advanced Level now include a section of
multiple choice questions. Multiple choice questions account for
24% of the marks in Paper 5 and 20% in Papers 6 to 10.
CERTIFIED ACCOUNTING TECHNICIAN (CAT)
ACCA (see page 6) introduced its Certified Accounting Technician (CAT)
qualification in 1997. Over 25,000 students are registered worldwide for
the CAT examinations, of which about 3,000 are in the UK. (Overseas,
the qualification is most popular in Singapore, Malaysia, Africa and
the Caribbean.)
EXAMINATION SITTINGS
June and December. Papers 1-4 can be taken as a paper-basedexamination or a computer-based assessment.
BPP Learning Media was the first publisher to make CAT material
available and since then has continued to meet the demands of a
growing market. The user-friendly style of our books has made
them popular with students and lecturers alike. BPP Learning
Media is an official publisher of CAT study material, so you can
be assured of quality guidance and questions. Please note that Chinese versions of CAT International Texts are nowavailable in China. Contact: [email protected] or call 00 86 21 6373 4450.

THE CHARTERED INSTITUTE OF TAXATION
THE CHARTERED INSTITUTE OFTAXATION (CIOT)
The CIOT is the senior professional body in the
UK concerned solely with all aspects of tax. It is
multi-disciplinary with a membership broadly
based across the professions and across
occupations in industry, commerce, the public
sector and the taxation authorities. By setting
the highest standards of excellence and integrity
the institute aims to be the leading UK body for
tax professionals.
THE EXAMINATIONS
Students normally need to sit an awareness
paper, two advisory papers and an application
and interaction paper. The papers can be sat
individually or in any combinations. In addition
two one hour E assessments must be passed.
ESSENTIAL LAW FOR THECHARTERED TAX ADVISER
The CIOT sell their own syllabus-defining
Law Manual entitled Essential Law for the
Chartered Tax Adviser. We recommend
students obtain a copy of the manual by
contacting the CIOT on 020 7340 0550 or
0844 579 6700.
The fifth edition of the law book is needed
for E assessments sat before 1 March 2010.
For assessments sat from 1 March 2010
onwards, you will need the sixth edition of
the law book.
TQT SYLLABUS MATERIALS
TQT has designed a suite of materials for the
current syllabus. Our ground breaking
CD-ROMS for the E assessments are designed
to emulate the real assessment with plenty
of short questions for students to practice.
In addition there are Passcards which will really
help students learn these subjects well.
Our Awareness Text, which students should
buy in conjunction with the Workbook, covers
all of the awareness modules. For the revision
stage we have produced Passcards and a
Practice and Revision Kit, both containing
plenty of questions for students to practice.
At the Advisory Level there are three technical
Texts: which of these Texts students need
depends on which papers students are taking
(see below). It is important that students buy
the Advisory Level Technical Texts together
with the Workbook for the Advisory Paper
students are taking. In addition at the Advisory
Level there will be a Practice and Revision Kit
for each paper which will be full of exam
standard questions for students to practice.
At the Application and Interaction Level there
is a Text for the initial phases of study and a
Practice and Revision Kit for the revision phase.
Note:As part of a ground breaking agreement withKaplan Financial, our CTA texts are sold under the TQTbrand.TQT – Tax Qualification Training – is an alliancebetween BPP Learning Media and Kaplan Financial.

FEATURES OF BPP LEARNINGMEDIA’S INTERACTIVE E-LEARNING TITLES
BPP Learning Media’s highly interactive
software is designed to be used without
manuals or workbooks. The tutorials are
completely self explanatory: each individual
module takes the user through several
worked examples, and users are then
expected to complete other examples
by themselves.
The extensive use of graphics and animation
provides simulation of the work environment,
as well as making the tutorials interesting
to use.
Advanced educational techniques,
providing assistance and feedback, are also
incorporated throughout the e-learning titles.
The graphical user interface greatly improves
the ease of use with extensive ‘point and
click’ facilities. An online glossary of terms
and calculator provide additional help to
master the examples.
Each unit is divided into a number of
modules, each of which is then split into
a number of sections comprising a series of
interactive pages. The navigation controls
allow the user to work through the unit
sequentially, or to access pages directly,
so that they can be used as reference
material.
STUDENT REPORTING
All software has student tracking built in as
standard. When a student first logs-on a user
account is created for each student. This is
then updated with various performance
indicators that can be viewed by the lecturer
or training supervisor through Reporter
(a utility supplied with the software). Student
data can also be exported in a format that
can be read by most spreadsheet packages
to allow custom reports to be built
if required.
E-LEARNING STANDARDS
BPP Learning Media's software is both
SCORM 1.2 and SCORM 2004 compliant.
If you have a requirement to run software
through a SCORM compliant Learning
Management System (Blackboard or
Moodle) please call +44 (0)1506 472 255
to discuss further or to arrange a
trial installation.
For further information on General Business
and Interactive Learning Solutions please call

BENEFITS OF USING BPPLEARNING MEDIA’SINTERACTIVE STUDYMATERIALS
Computer based learning is more flexible
than traditional training methods as the user
has complete control over the speed
at which the material is presented. Research
by universities has shown that a time saving
of around 40% is possible, without any
impact on the user’s level of knowledge on
completion of the learning process.
As well as improved learning, the interactive
materials enable users to study in a flexible
environment at their own pace, at a
convenient place and time.
Our materials are used by most UK
universities, the accountancy profession,
leading banks and financial services
organisations, as well as the public sector,
to teach business-related subjects.
Delivered by computer, all material can be
used by students on campus or at home as
part of a distance learning programme.
